I'm not gonna blame Jay for the writing. I figure that's all on Metzen with his awful ideas and stories. All of the worst parts of the gameplay though (and if I'm being fair, some of the best) were on Jay.

Okay, I've gotten all of my chars to lvl 70 and made it to 100 paragon levels in adventure mode, but no bloody rift keystone fragments have dropped at all. Am I doing things wrong? I thought they were supposed to be earned via bounty rewards?
Well I suppose that's what I get for using outdated Internet information!

Honestly I think the whole Diablo story and lore is really interesting and compelling, and D1 and D2 did a good job of presenting it, but when it came to D3 they just forgot subtlety and how to write good dialogue

They don't exist anymore, you can run regular rifts whenever you want.
You do still need greater rift keystones for Grifts though, which come from Rift Guardians in regular rifts.
And you also no longer have to level greater rift keystones. You just pick what grift level you want based on what torment or GR you've cleared to date. Its a lot cleaner a system

I don't think Leveling GR keys was that bad otherwise. Actually, it was a great way for a fresh season character to get some gear and break out of the lower torments.
And ironically, the old key system would work fairly well with augmenting.

For real though, I think the timing is right, this year. I know some people were clamoring for a new expac last year, but nawww. There was still a lot of life left in Reaper. But now? Timing is perfect. We're in, what, Season 6? I can't see Reaper going on for yet ANOTHER year like this. It's time, boys and girls. It's time.
Especially for how QUIET and lowkey the D3 team has been. Season 6's patch wasn't even a major patch! I mean hell, think about it. Everything kinda lines up, too. Season 7 should start end of July or so, right? And that should last about 3 months, if it lines up with what they said with S5:
Q: How long will Season 5 last?
A: Starting with Season 5, all seasons going forward will last approximately three months.
Season 6 started April 29th, so again, should end late July, with S7 starting at the butt-end of July. So what's 3 months from the end of July?
November. Blizzcon is on Nov 4-5.

I mean, you say "Blizzard is more focused on x, y, and z", but there's different teams for each game. I mean, D3 has a smaller presence at Blizzcon than the other games, but it's still there.
Blizzard also has a history of supporting games WELL beyond what would be considered a reasonable timeframe. Fuck, they still do patches for Diablo II, even. That shit's crazy! SCII is done, right, but they still support that.
I'm feeling pretty confident about this, I dunno. Putting out a new expac would bring back in more players and more purchases. They might even take the opportunity to put in microtransactions for cosmetic shit.
I honestly was fine with either Cain living on or Leah replacing him (since they decided to kill him). To leave a major void like that was really annoying to me for some reason. Don't get me started with Adria either.... I'm glad that I'm not the only one who found the story to be a sad attempt after I loved Diablo 2's story. The only reason I ever finished the story in 3 was because my wife decided to try it out and we played together. I only could get through half of Act 1 before I quit because the story was just not engaging enough to trudge through it myself.
There's only one story I care about and need an expansion for; the thief's side plot. It is the most cliche by the book gruff jackass dude actually has a soft side plot ever but I have to know how it ends.
Will it end in a colossal waste of time and why bother effort like the main plot and the other two companions side plot or will it continue to be so standardly average it's the best thing in the game by default.
That said the plot line from last patch's new island area, while nothing ground breaking, was a nice mix of story telling and gameplay. Worth running through at least once if you've never done it.

I thought they "ended" his story with the Act 5 side plot pretty well. At least in line with the Scorceress side story ending.

His side story ends in the jail with a note and dagger that might as well say "to be continued..." There's closure with his brother but not the person who left the note while twirling their mustache.
Templar's was pretty definitely over, sorceress they could end there or stretch it to tease out more, but the scoundrel's story seemed like they knew they had at least one more side mission so you could run down the person who left the letter. The person writing that letter kicked off his entire reason for having a poor attitude so it's weird to leave it there. It's been forever but I thought he even says something along the lines of this isn't over or we're gonna get 'ya after reading the letter.
Shen also has one but I don't remember a damn thing about it now other than liking it while doing it and liking how it fit what was hinted at in vanilla and RoS when you talked to him.
Oh right, forgot about the letter part. It has been too long since I ran that part of the story and just wrote the letter off as the closure.
To refresh my memory of what the note said I ventured to a Diablo wiki and discovered that there is an end past the dagger and note. Now I want to go find out if this is true...

I also think it'd be a cool area, be it an entire act or a set piece like the stormy island for both gameplay and potentially decent plots which is another reason why I probably care about that story.

It's not exactly fair saying that "there's no good revenue stream" for D3. If Blizzard went the route they did with Starcraft 2, the revenue streams are the expansions.
And, let's be honest here. Right now, they're pretty much done with their major releases: Legacy of the Void - launched; Overwatch - launched...the only thing that they have announced that's still being developed is Legion...and that's on the final stretch of the journey to being launched. Blizzard is not exactly a company that just sits around not developing something (and no, new heroes and/or maps in HotS or decks in Hearthstone don't count as developing something major).

Ahhh ok. Gotcha. Yeah I thought you didn't get that last part of the dialogue. I know I didn't so that was interesting to me.
But really, throughout the entire thing game, oh you got that sword bit? well you wont get next one. Oh you beat my general, well, he was weak wait til you face me, oh that isn't the only hell portal, oh you closed them both, well no matter. Ugh, shut up with the bad guy talking to you. Monologue if you have to at the boss fight, but ffs, stop with the interacting every time you foil his dastardly plan.
What could another xpac honestly bring to the table though? Lvl 80 before paragons, would be so so. New areas? They seem happy giving us them piecemeal. New gear?
I mean, I'd play, who am I kidding, but it'd fall back in to the same pattern. I vote for Diablo 4, Cains revenge! You thought he was dead, but she just made him angry.

New class (how about a return of the Druid from Diablo 2 expansion?), new Act dealing with Imperius and/or Tyrael going rogue? I mean, they did leave room for where they could go at the end of Reaper.

I'm sorry I couldn't hear you over the return of the necromancer
IIRC there are hints that they are working on something D3 related. I could see couple routes they could take
-Another expansion. I'm not sure what they could do as a new class, since I think any such thing would be stepping on the toes of existing classes. The biggest issue for necromancer is that witch doctor exists. which makes it harder to keep both feeling unique, given that both deal with necromancy. Also probably has the downside of not being a huge cash cow, given the track record for Blizzard games.
-Diablo 4. Let's them really shake things up because they can have a new class line up. Also means they can revisit design decisions from D3 that didn't pan out well, but are large enough that it would be too disruptive to adjust them in an expansion. Also would probably get them more sales than a D3 expansion.
-Diablo MMORPG. I haven't been following WoW that closely lately. I think WotLK was the best expansion and then it went down hill from there. That game is really old. I don't think they could do a sequel, I mean look at the vanilla server crowd, do a WoW 2 and a sizable chunk of the community would refuse to leave the WoW servers for WoW 2 ones. Diablo is probably their best franchise to use as the base for a new MMORPG. It wouldn't be WoW 2. I think there's a sizable demand for swords and magic which Diablo covers. It's got the ground work for classes. I mean it has enough there to probably shoehorn in hard faction PvP, but I don't think that adds to game and detracts from it, so I think in that regards it's in a better spot than StarCraft or Overwatch, so both of those franchises might be a bad choice since they are locked into the hard faction setup (Diablo could chuck the concept out the window and find another way to accommodate people's PvP fix, if they felt inclined to do so).
A bit of a bump, but an update I felt you all would want to see!
We've been preparing the changes for Firebird's Finery, and ultimately, we've settled on slightly redesigning the 4-piece and 6-piece bonuses. Here's how they currently read internally (though, as always, these details are subject to change):
(4) Set Bonus
Dealing Fire damage with one of your skills causes the enemy to take 1000% weapon damage as Fire for 3 seconds. This effect can be repeated a second and third time by different skills. If an enemy is burning due to three different skills simultaneously the enemy will Ignite, dealing 3000% weapon damage per second until they die
(6) Set Bonus
Your damage is increased by 100% for each nearby enemy that is Ignited up to a maximum bonus of 2000%. You always receive the maximum bonus whenever a nearby Elite monster is Ignited
As you can see, we've definitely gone the way of trying to preserve its play style while approaching it from a slightly different angle. You are still encouraged to light multiple targets on fire, and the more you light up, the more powerful you grow.
It should be noted this will impact some existing builds, like the Firebird's/Chantodo's interaction. We are definitely going to want plenty of player testing and experimentation with the revised set, so expect to see a dedicated Focused Feedback thread when we head to PTR.
We're really looking forward to see your thoughts and testing!
Uhhhhhhhhhhhh so we're back to blizzard/blackhole + some other spell? (hydra, maybe)
Don't like the sound of this on paper at all. You're almost not trying to do damage with your spells anymore, but to just use them to apply the dot... Three spenders? Maybe 2, then use etched sigil... but... wtf. So I guess you have to use etched sigil + disintegrate or arcane torrent

Best I can tell it was some split between him, Leonard Boyarsky's, and Metzen's providing the story

Nice chart to figure out how honest a news source is.
mobas are so stale we're back to tf2 (overwatch), no diablo would obviously have to go to an underserved and rather stale genre for diablo 4
diablo 4: brought to you by telltale games
Uhhhhhhhhhhhh so we're back to blizzard/blackhole + some other spell? (hydra, maybe)
Don't like the sound of this on paper at all. You're almost not trying to do damage with your spells anymore, but to just use them to apply the dot... Three spenders? Maybe 2, then use etched sigil... but... wtf. So I guess you have to use etched sigil + disintegrate or arcane torrent
Also FB/Archon is dead, basically.
Ya that sounds really awful.
I was hoping to see the set get a redesign, not an even more restrictive version of the same crap bonuses.
