Man, I just realized last night that completing season challenge tiers offers rewards. I was totally baffled by Set Me Free because I thought it was all RNG and then I realized that I could claim rewards for the whole set.
Threw on Zunimassa's Haunt set onto my Witch Doctor's current build, then mixed my abilities up so that I have Zombie Dogs x4, Gargantuan x3 (Short Man's Finger power + Restless Giant), a Fetish army that doesn't expire, and more fetishes that pop up during attacks (Fetish Sycophants), all of which do 2,500% more damage to any target that takes damage from a spell that costs mana.
I no longer use a basic attack (replaced with Phantasm Spirit Barrage), and Diseased Locust Swarm means everything in their path is getting that damage bonus. Piranhanado pulls them all in for increased damage. I'm basically just avoiding damage and tossing out a few Phantasms for damage boosts with the Diseased Locust Swarm spreading like wildfire while I watch my plethora of minions causing havoc. My passives are Midnight Feast, Creeping Death, Fetish Sycophants, and Pierce the Veil (I'm considering swapping that to Zombie Handler, as I personally am not doing the majority of the damage).
I'm wondering how long I can keep doing that before it becomes a problem and I start getting my ass kicked. My friend and I have been playing together on T6, but he's been complaining about not moving up. After he left last night, I did T7 GR30 with ease, so I think this build may be working right (albeit it's a bit risky).
Anyone with Witch Doctor experience know if this type of build is sustainable, or am I just enjoying a short-lived minion vacation?
I did a seasonal Witch Doctor a short while ago (last season I think?), and I did a pet army with a similar build. I think I ended up using 6 piece Zunimassa and 4 piece Helltooth at the same time, making my toughness quite high (in addition to having the army of pets to stand between me and the enemy). This is possible because Zunimassa has an offhand item plus ring and is a 7 piece set, while Helltooth is a 6 piece set with shoulder armor. So you can use chest/head/shoulders of Helltooth and offhand/legs/hands/ring/feet from Zunimassa plus a Ring of Royal Grandeur. The question then becomes whether or not you can kill stuff, but you are exceedingly unlikely to die quickly. I know I was easily able to solo rifts on Torment 13, I forget the Greater Rift numbers though.
you probably won't be able to use pierce the veil unless you're using a basic attack (replace with grave injustice for sustain/CD reduction, or whatever that talent is that just gives you mana regen.)
you can also use firebats as your filler/debuff applicator and take the rune that removes the channel cost
there's also a soul harvest rune that returns mana, assuming your goal is a lakumba's/harvester setup anyway

Mixing sets, eh? I had not thought about that. Thanks for that idea!

I used firebats for a while, but it's channeling cost is so high that I burn through mana way to quickly. With Diseased Locust Swarm, I cast once and with how quickly the minion army tears through opponents, it just keeps spreading and causing minor damage to allow the army to keep up with the seemingly endless 2,500% increased damage. When an elite or group of blues enters, trigger 3 Restless Giants and they go on a rampage. This is a totally new build experience for me, so it definitely could use some tweaking.
I definitely agree that Pierce the Veil needs to go. Perhaps I'll try out your suggestion of firebats and use Spiritual Attunement for the mana boost and regen. Much thanks for that suggestion.

Beta d00ds, necromancer is temporarily removed again.
Hey all,
The Necromancer class has been once more taken down from the Closed Beta. We're digging deep into all of your feedback this past week about the class sets and getting more changes ready for the next Closed Beta patch.
In the mean time, we recommend you take a shot at the latest Challenge Rift, explore the new zones (if you haven't already), and hang tight for our next update.
As a reminder, if you use the PTR Character Copy at this point, you will lose all your current progress on your existing Necromancer and need to start from scratch once the class is available again for testing. Please keep this in mind!

Hmm, will be interesting to see what they change with the sets. The blood set was frustrating the hell out of me. It felt like it should be better, but I could never get past about 50 stacks at absolute best and that was usually close the end of a greater rift. The stupid blood rush having every rune bonus would consume a stack if you happened to pass through any enemies. Ugh.
I've been meaning to log in the past few days, but haven't had time.
Ya, I'm wondering how different they'll be because the initial bonuses all looked pretty rough. Especially because 3 of the sets had awkward stacking mechanics.
I'm hoping it was just our chance to see an initial concept, you know? They could be well past that internally, but there can be merit to getting our input on earlier designs. Like, they may have had a testing goal of "now that mages are removed from Command Skeles, are they fun?"
If the Bone set had been a flat "your minions/army do 2000%", people may have ignored the Mage skill in an already crowded skill bar, or just used Singularity. Instead, they got plenty of feedback saying "hey, mages feel kinda clunky and awkward."

Essence in general I thought felt very clunky (and said so on the forum).
Generator/spender rhythm doesn't feel great in general, which is why basically every build tries to forgo it, but I found it even more cumbersome since you're also trying to work with Corpse skills. Hopefully they'll rework Essence to be more like Arcane Power.
I'm still missing three ancient pieces. The ones I do have are pretty middling quality so I've been looking for upgrades to those as well as my weapon but they refuse to drop. I've gotten just about everything else though. Might end up with a full set of ancients for every other DH set before I finish off my UE set.
Is anyone willing to do the boss rush conquest tomorrow or some other point in the near/ish future? I need one conquest for my stash tab and that's the only one that doesn't require a second character that isn't the sprinter one so...boss rush it is.

A lot of expected answers, but these stood out imo:
Resource Cost Reduction will not effect health for Necromancers.
There are not currently items that increase timers for pets, or that will increase the caps. But there are items coming up that will allow you to more quickly reach that cap, or to further buff the pets.
More mages at once would feel a lot better, but on the downside this and other comments made it sound like the stacking set bonuses are here to stay.
Blood is Power is going to be redesigned. Players broke the skill, allowing invincibility and massive damage output. It will maintain the same theme however, just in a less broken and abusable way. The Bone Armor - Invulnerability rune allowing you invincible will also be fixed, making the CD start after the skill ends.
Necromancers will have scythes, and phylacteries, but no unique armor piece.
Necromancer sets won't have seven or more pieces. Sets are meant to feel powerful on their own, and when you combine then, they just blur together.
Good to know for Kadala. The set thing though is weird considering they just made sure Crusaders could use Sages like everyone else...
The Blood set will be tweaked, they're going to make healing mechanics not drain the stacks as quickly. It should just end up being better. More healing overall. It should still maintain the ebb and flow playstyle.
Finally got the Rolands set for my crusader so I can swap from blessed hammer of not hitting targets to "oh right what I target matters."
My crusader finally got the full Invoker set (thank you Kadala and Convert Set Item recipe), so now she wades into battle yelling "HIT ME!"
I'm just missing the Bombardment belt for her, I think. Oh, I'm also missing that rarest of crusader shields.
I've gotten that belt, and I have some of that set. I can't imagine how fun it would be to be a walking paincone.
It's rather interesting. I forget what Torment rift we were doing, but I still had to hit stuff a few times to kill them.
However, if they decided to hit me first (like that pack of whatever they are that pounce on you), they die almost immediately from the thorns damage.
I'd like that setup a LOT more if it could kill treasure goblins worth a dang. Awesome for GRifts, rubbish for reg rift or bounty farming.
I dunno about that. When I happen upon a goblin I can chase it around and whack it with my weapon, which is usually enough to prevent it from completing its portal.
Meanwhile whatever else happens to be around us, dies when they attack me.
Last night, my Hardcore toon was killed. She was 67 and facing off against Malthael. Doomsday, the final battle. I had progressively increasing the difficulty for the challenge, gear, and entertainment. I found Expert required more skill and time with boss fights, so I thought this was the appropriate level. Malthael was down to about 15% health when the Reaper stole her breathe away. I stared at the screen, jaw agape, and sat there for a while. I like that try to memorialize the loss of your toon, but I think it would have made the sting quick and easy if Rick's face plastered the screen with something like "Rubba-dubba-dub-dub! You done fucked up, brah!"
When all was said and done, there was only one thing to do: make another hardcore toon. The burn means it's working.

I haven't played Hardcore since they switched it from inferno to torment. Most of my hardcore characters died to belial or bees that shoot bees. I think one made it to get killed by a fallen lunatic. Good times.

Roland's set feels broken in that the slash damage does not seem to be applying? Like my shield bash is ridiculous especially with the flail of the ascended being able to AOE bomb, but slash is like doing less damage than when I was using other sets?
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

All the non hammer sets felt woefully underpowered to me unless you are doing the litany of nightmares thing. Granted I haven't tried the Crusader since last season so maybe they made changes.
The roland set with shield bash and flail of the ascended is pretty strong. Like I can shield bash up 5 super powered hits and then aoe damage entire groups for huge kills, but survival and like health regen are pretty garbo. Doing a quick look it seems pretty universal.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
Are you using the generator called slash or are you talking about sweep attack? Slash is just a generator, sweep attack does get the boost.
The set is raw, unfiltered ass though and would recommend using anything but Roland's. I think they doubled the damage from last season but it's still really, really bad. Made of paper and the other sets kind of just out damage it, too

So, maybe good news to zerospace's concern.
This really, really bums me out. No 7 piece sets? So definitely no way to get a combo of sets? Boo. Maybe this has been abused too much on other classes. The other major bummer is no special armor pieces. So ... no belts just for the necro? Or does Blizz consider belts to be something else? That feels like a huge miss to me. I suppose this is something they might choose to change in the future, though, especially if they end up nerfing the necro abilities a bit too much.
The blood set changes sound good, generally. I haven't actually looked at what other beta players are using -- are there emerging meta builds, Noggin? Maybe I've missed the boat, but the best I've been able to do without cranking up some gems beyond the mid-50s was torment 10-ish with any of the necro sets. My LoN was far, far stronger.

I read that as them not having a special armor type that other classes can't use. e.g. wizard hats, mighty belts, voodoo masks, etc. So they (probably?) will still have belts and bracers that specifically alter necro skills. They just won't have, say, EVIL SHOULDER PADS or something that are a necro only armor type.
They just meant no necro-only item TYPE, like cloaks, spirit stones, etc.
Most sets don't really combo anyway, ever since they transitioned into having almost all of them be "(2) effect / (4) DR / (6) Damage". Wizard is the exception because wizard item design is a garbage fire thanks to archon/swami and it being stupid easy to combo sets with Tal4-6.
The downside that I feel they didn't address is access to Sage's, but it could still be possible. Depending on what the upcoming necro legendaries do, we could see a 2-4 pc Plague / 2 Sage lance combo that would do fine for T9-11ish.
As far as the meta, I haven't started really looking at that yet because non-set legendaries always have a huge effect on builds.

Got it, that makes way more sense then. Forgive me, it was really early AM here when I read your post, Noggin. I haven't been keeping up with what's going on with the beta this week, I've been so damn busy with everything else (and a friend of betsuni's has been trying to get me to play heroes of the storm in the meantime).
I still find the lack of a 7 piece set to be a bummer. I hope they change their mind on that. The reason is the saint set has a damage boost at the 2pc level that might have been a nice 2pc+6pc or whatever combo. I think it was something like 1000% damage bonus to bone armor. I was thinking it could be interesting in combination with the blood set or plague. Not sure, and obviously couldn't try it out with the sets as they are/were.
So yeah using sweep attack instead of slash... Doing pretty solidly. Getting into the 50s of gr without too much trouble. And it sucks losing the aoe of shield glare bombs, having a spamable vaccuum killer is nice.
And got a blade of prophecy this morning!
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
Awww yeah. I was able to clear gr70 first try on my demon hunter this morning with two minutes to spare. Got kinda lucky on the monster composition I guess. That's the highest I've ever cleared.
Finishing a GR with a minute or so on the clock is like "Whew." and then IN YOUR FACE GR!
Hahaha for me, the "whew" moment is when you're actively trying to kill the rift boss while the final minute counts down on the screen (taunting you =P), hoping you get a good crit somewhere that finishes it off before the timer hits 0, and when it does... it's oh so satisfying! (Yeah, been there a few too many times heh, heh).
