Suddenly, my quiet little world of only one or two projects has come crashing down.
I've got a Milo on the needles for one of the day care teachers who's having a little boy, she leaves for maternity leave on 1 March.
I've got 2 wedding presents to weave up before 30 March.
I've got a lacy shawl to finish for myself before that same wedding.
I've got some facecloths to make for one of the other ladies at daycare.
And I've still got my winter jumper to finish.
Plus I need to start on Ellie's winter jumper as well.
I think this is the last box of this version I'll be doing. I need to take a different approach to the boxes as they are just large enough for wood movement to matter. But was able to get everything sorted and hopefully shipping isn't terrible to fill an order for valentines day. Thanks @bowen for making the commission happen.
Put felt in the lid which is new this time. Also did an engraving.
Up next I'm going to be working on 2 double sided things. One is trying to see how hard doing a d20 would be. Then I can try and source antler or bone or whatever else bowen had in mind.
Also I've been working on mechanical keyboard keycaps. My daughter has a white and aluminium keyboard and I think it'd be fun to try and make her a keycap from purpleheart.
Also I want a wooden keyboard. It'd look neat!
I think I'm going to cast the stems with resin separately and then glue them in. I don't think a wooden milled stem would be reliable. Also the holes are very small and fairly deep which those endmills are expensive and prone to breaking.
Well the initial design we had discussed was having the script in wood and hanging that up.
I ruined a few pieces of wood trying to make that work but there are some thin strips of wood that break as it turns out.
Next idea was the bubble effect and we'd hang that up. I liked that idea but I liked the piece of wood more, so I wanted to do this.
Worst case I may be selling it and making her what she wants.
My Latin isn't great, so it "Per Laborum Igni Procusus Sum" either means "Through hard work and fire I am forged" or it could mean "Throughout hard work and fire I get hammered"
It's Nakia's Shawl from Black Panther--the actual design that was used in the movie!
It was originally posted with machine-knit instructions, but they released a hand-knit version afterwards with some errata that I listed out on my page. I can also send a noted up PDF to anyone who's interested.
Still letting the adventure sign dry. Wife nixed the magnet key holder idea. I was going to drill holes in the bottom and glue in some magnets to hold the keys since this is going to be hanging in the entryway.
The center e area is dark because the wood was pocketed out deeper in those areas.
Also ran my first double sided operation that was important. This should let me work on doing the destiny ghost project that's been my white whale for forever. Also @bowen dice thing. I've been talking with @minor incident about doing keycaps for mechanical keyboards. I've been posting about it a bit in the moes tech thread.
Pretty happy with it as a first try. I may refine the process a bit. Also need to do a better job getting the stems and keycaps attached.
Decided to put the laser cutter through it's paces and tested it on Marble. It didn't come out quite as clear as I would have liked honestly.
Though I think that can be forgiven considering

Started a hat a while back, realized too late it was gonna be too big so I decided just to bind off after the first section and call it a scarflet instead

Dedwrekka Whats the wattage on your laser?
What settings did you use?
I used our school's 60 watt Epilog Helix laser cutter. The settings I used for it, in their menu, was 50% Speed and 100% power. The images I used were raster images with Jarvis dithering.
I've been testing out different settings to see what settings engrave better and what you'd need to do to get a deeper engraving on marble. My opinion right now is that if you want the most accurate and deep engraving on marble you want to do multiple passes, just run the same job several times until you're as deep as you want it.
The tiles I did above were done with one pass. I took one of them to the buffing wheel and even a loose muslin wheel with a very light polishing compound was able to take the engraving off. So, one quick pass only took about 30 seconds, but only got like a micron thin engraving into it.
oh god, I ordered the bridge for the guitar I'm building!
It's real now! breathe
what if I screw it up?! breathe
this was not cheap! breathe why did I think I could do this? breathe
now I have to design the whole thing including a custom photo etched pickguard and inlaid rosewood tuners breathe breathe!
fffffffffffffffff
anyway, here's the bridge that should be arriving sometime next week along with a moisture meter so I can tell when the body wood is finally dry enough to cut
I can etch all the things now.
See my previous post about the acrylic. I can also do granite tile or metal that's been powder coated or painted. I think glass (which I'd be interested in trying soon).
By etch I mean it can scratch any surface basically. But pretty scratching.
the size of the bit? It's super tiny. It comes to a v so not sure on surface. It's mostly for engraving.
If you need something cut out, we'd use a different bit.
The CNC at the makerspace is 30x30.
I can do it at home on either 8x8 or 16x16 machine.
Moisture meter arrived and my ash slab is at just under 11% which is technically low enough to cut.
That said, the neck and fretboard are at 7% which is even better.
I think I'll wait a couple more months which should give me ample time to cut and shape the neck and fretboard.
Edit: scratch that. Something was nagging at me so I drove a couple finish nails into the center of the slab and used them as probes and .... well ....
=/
Looks like I may end up ordering a blank which I really didn't want to do

Do you have a serger?
I just have a regular ol machine so I guess I just zig zag

Yes, I have a serger. Makes leggings very easy. My next goal/dream is to get a cover stitch machine!

This might tickle your design bone

That's certainly a cool idea. I'm not a big car person but that does give me an idea for some friends of mine.
THANKS A LOT FOR MORE WORK @bowen
Doing a more simple CNC project and playing with epoxy:
I'm not sure if my wife will like it, but here's hoping she does!
I ruined a few pieces of wood trying to make that work but there are some thin strips of wood that break as it turns out.

I went out and bought a bunch of cardstock in different colours.
And a label cutter, with an eyelet maker for a metal eyelet thing and a paper cutter.
All in prep to eventually start working on my own business stuff for my knitting and weaving.
I am, quite frankly, insane.
I really really need to get around to maybe getting somebody to design me a logo.
But, I don't actually have a business yet.
weeeeeeee i need my brain to calm the f down.

breathe you fool, breathe!
Looking forward to this though! Mostly because I want to learn all the lessons from you.
I'll probably learn a lot of things not to do!

what size?
I'm envisioning a fair sized pick guard

30x30 would definitely
Once I get the design down, we'll have to iron it out!
I have somehow bruised my knuckle.
my finger is now in a splint.
I cannot knit. i haven't tried to weave.
I am... distressed

That really, really sucks. I hate that uncomfortable twitchy-finger feeling I get when I can't knit.
