D&D Adventurers League at PAX East

MisterQuivMisterQuiv Registered User new member
Good evening everyone!

My name is Garrett Colon, and I'm going to be running D&D at PAX East this year! We're going to be showcasing the entirety of Season 4 that we have available, which is Curse of Strahd from adventures 1 to 6, and we (my staff and I) are looking for some information from everyone. If you could fill out the survey link attached to this post, it would make our jobs easier with knowing what adventures are going to be in demand, how many new vs experienced players are coming, and so on.

Here's the player survey link! http://goo.gl/forms/S1oA2zEQRF

And then for those who are interested in DM'ing, I'm still looking for DM's! If you want to join our crew, slots are filling up rather quick, so the sooner you fill out this second form, the better.

Here's the link for DM registration: http://goo.gl/forms/m8f02iPEyf

If you guys have any questions, just PM me here, or send me an email via the email in those forms!

Take it easy, and see you all in about a month

We've been playing on Roll20 ourselves since, well, all of us are literally on other sides of the country from each other.

I haven't had a chance to play Curse of Strahd yet, or run it for my group at home. So I'm hoping to get to try out the adventures to get a taste for it.

Well this just hit the top of my list for things to do this PAX. Am I understanding correctly that there are 6 levels worth of content to try to blast through in 1 weekend?

Will I be able to roll up create a level 1 character and just run him through adventures all weekend? I'm just wondering how much of a time investiture this might be. Like if I can roll up Sunday morning and just play D&D for most of the day that's a solid possibility for me, and likely a few of my other friends as well.

If it is anything like the other adventure league play, there will be pre-generated characters available to play if you want to get straight in.

For those unfamiliar, AL missions are essentially 1 hour sessions with a fight encounter. My monk is only level 2 but he's on Roll20 so not aware of any way of printing that off (for free). They should have pre-gen characters there already.

Awesome on the time length. That basically means I should be able to hit up a fair amount of ravenloft goodness throughout the con should I be able to get my compatriots down for such action.

Now as far as character building goes, I can spin out a level 1 in like 10 minutes and that's because I write slowly. Heck depending on the class I can spin out a level 6 in about 15 minutes. Is it cool if I do this ahead of time?

Now I now there are some AL character building rules. If I wanted to do the light based monk from the SCAG would that be cool?

The rules for character creation are different for AL, you can refer to this site for some of the necessary aspects.

Except for the creation, you can use everything else from 5E rules.

Are there limits to the size of one's party? I am rolling deep with 7 (including me) - would be awesome if we could all adventure together. I assume the timeslots are first come, first served? Totally psyched, playing D&D at Pax East is one of my favorite parts :)

will there be characters already created to be provided for players who do not have but would like to join? I'm not familiar with current rules and have not played in "quite some time."

However, I am really interested in joining and playing throughout some of my time at PAX.

So I am a volunteer Adventurer's League DM that will be attending PAX East this weekend, I'll ask Garrett to make a post to confirm my answers for you all.
Am I understanding correctly that there are 6 levels worth of content to try to blast through in 1 weekend?
We are running DDAL4-1 through DDAL4-6. A lot of these are 2 hour adventures however, so the expected level to hit is probably 4th, possibly 5th if you play EVERY adventure.
DDAL4-1 is a 5 part adventure that takes part largely in Faerun, the rest all take part in Barovia.
Will I be able to roll up create a level 1 character and just run him through adventures all weekend? I'm just wondering how much of a time investiture this might be. Like if I can roll up Sunday morning and just play D&D for most of the day that's a solid possibility for me, and likely a few of my other friends as well.
Standard AL rules for character generation apply (see the AL Player's guide at http://dndadventurersleague.org/downloads/)
We WILL have pregens available for everyone.
We are playing D&D ALL 3 days from open to close! The full player schedule has not been released yet.
Now as far as character building goes, I can spin out a level 1 in like 10 minutes and that's because I write slowly. Heck depending on the class I can spin out a level 6 in about 15 minutes. Is it cool if I do this ahead of time?
Absolutely! See my reply above about the AL Player's guide for specific directions.
****edit All characters have to start at level 1 (Unless you have xp from DM or other sources to apply to a new character).
Now I now there are some AL character building rules. If I wanted to do the light based monk from the SCAG would that be cool?
Yes, SCAG options are all AL legal. Note: You cannot mix Elemental Evil spells/options with a SCAG-based character.
Where will you be located at?
On the edge of the Tabletop Gaming area, next to the BYOC area.
Are there limits to the size of one's party?
AL limits table-sizes to 3-7 players.
will there be characters already created to be provided for players who do not have but would like to join? I'm not familiar with current rules and have not played in "quite some time."
Absolutely there will be pre-gen characters available, and all of the AL DMs are well-versed in handling new players.

    Hey there folks!

I ceased to exist with all the planning, but I have returned to mimic the things Zandvor said above!

There will in fact be 6 modules available this weekend! Here's the full list:

DDAL 4-1: Suits of the Mists (Levels 1-2, Two hours per session, geared to new players)
DDAL 4-2: The Beast (Levels 1-4, Two hours per session)
DDAL 4-3: The Hangman (Levels 1-4, Two hours per session)
DDAL 4-4: The Marionette (Levels 1-4, Four hours per session)
DDAL 4-5: The Esper (Levels 1-4, Two hours per session)
DDAL 4-6: The Ghost (Levels 1-4, Four hours per session and our Preview!)

I recommend that players move through the adventures in order, for best effect (it's worth it, btw)

    And our schedule!
    Friday
    10am-6pm
    8pm-Midnight

    Saturday
    10am-6pm
    8pm-Midnight

    Sunday
    10am-6pm

So for two hour events, we fire every other hour (10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 8pm, 10pm)
And for four hour events, we fire every four hours! (10am, 2pm, 8pm)

And as Zandvor said above, we will have pregens available all weekend, and if you want to bring a character you created ahead of time, as long as it's level 1 or played in Season 4 already, you are good to go!
Same goes for what he said concerning the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, and how it interacts with the Elemental Evil Companion (hint, they don't mix sadly).

He was also spot on as to where we are located, and also party size: If you show up with a full party of 7, we will do our best to seat you with your party so there is no splitting!

And as for new players, we will have pre-generated characters for use, and like he said, any of our DM's will be able to show you the ropes. I recommend starting with 4-1 at some point during the weekend if you are brand spanking new though, as it is geared towards new players.

If anyone else has any questions, just post a reply!

See you all in 4 days

As someone relatively new to 5e but not d&d as a hole do you still recommend 4-1

  • MisterQuivMisterQuiv Registered User new member
I would do either 4-1 or 4-2: Either one of those are good starting points, but 4-2 gets your character into Barovia a little faster (the realm for season 4). If you do just one session of 4-1 to get some character experience, and then jump into 4-2, that works as well.

I'm hoping to spend a bunch of time with you guys on Friday. Where will you be? Should I bring my own dice?
