We do live in a relatively new culture in the industry where people inexplicably have this compulsive urge to leak all of their company's plans to the wider media, though, and I think others are just resigning themselves to that fact whenever it happens.
And the memory card slots. Honestly I'm not sure how they will handle official GC and Wii emulation in the future. They don't seem to want users to have to learn a different memory management interface. Other VC games are of the type that just saved to the cartridge, and thus far the Wii BC is literally an entire Wii so all the memory management there is the same as ever. Cube is in a unique position. I wonder if they'd just try to simulate one infinitely large memory card, rather than coming up with some interface for swapping virtual cards around.
Infinite large memory cards might potentially lead to bugs in various games? Though they could patch them individually if there's any problems, since they'd be releasing via virtual console. They'll probably just use game-specefic virtual memory cards like the PS3 does for PS2 games on the PSN.
PS3s do the 'infinitely creatable virtual memory cards' thing and you virtually slot them into Slot 1 or 2 for PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility through discs (and PS1 PSN games). Though the officially released PS2 PSN games use their own individual memory cards dedicated and locked to only that game that auto-mounts.
I believe that's also standard practice for uh, third party Ninteno emulation, is to create a virtual memory card on a per game basis. So you load up your GameCube game, and you create a virtual memory card unique to that game, and it's simulated size is exactly the same as the old ones. And apparently this is quite stable! Infinitely large memory cards or a single virtual card used for multiple games can corrupt quite easily, for whatever reason.
Oh brilliant

In all honesty, has any console ever been a complete secret this close to its release? I really think the answer is no, but if it isn't then that is about all the have to fall back on at this point. Otherwise they have no excuse to be annoyed that people want to freaking know.
I mean unless the thing is under $200, you better give people SOME time to plan on getting the thing and they can't do that without INFORMATION.

My more cynical side is starting to believe the lack of any information and refusal to talk about it is an elaborate marketing scheme.

I mean, I wouldn't want to mess with any situation where massive interest was being generated for my new thing with little effort on my part.

Hah! Now I'm picturing a scenario where they were totally going to unveil it last E3, but someone screwed up so they couldn't. Before they could fire the guy for screwing up their big reveal they see the massive interest not showing it had generated and decided to run with it.

I still assume it's something stupid and contractual that's holding up the announcement. Like retailers complaining that if they announce it too soon it'll hurt their sales over the holidays.

There is a fine line where that interest can turn negative. It is not exactly like people are super high on Nintendo consoles right now.

To be perfectly honest, I think if Iwata were still alive it would have been announced by now. For some reason the new president is waiting I feel.
And there is some merit in that I think. Aside from getting everyone crazy (without leaving much of a lull between announcement and release for that hype to die down), if they can come out strong right out of the gate with just tons of great games to show off at announcement, it could work out well for them.

Yeah that's true enough too.
They run the risk that the longer we go without information the more people will fill in the blanks. Building the idea up and up until the actual reveal can't live up to the hype people have in their minds.
Granted that'd be a temporary problem. The Internet is often quick to forget, but still you always want to put your best foot forward with these kind of reveals.

At this point, I think its this and also they're not going to make the March/April whatever the current release window is. That's also possibly why there's still no reveal.
What if Nintendo hasn't been working on the NX at all and instead has just been going out to wild parties every night, and now it's desperately trying to throw something together at the last second so it doesn't lose its scholarship.

If we look at prior console launches, typically at E3 you'll get a hardware tease with some tech demo. The following year, the launch games will be shown with hardware releasing that holiday season.
Times have changed quite a bit though, but if we use the launch year as an example, that gives us a June -> November launch, which is about 5-6 months. Nintendo has stated a launch window of March so far, although that is dubious at best. But let's assume they stick with that date. That means they can show off hardware/software near the end of October and still be in the 6 month window.
This may just be Nintendo being Nintendo though and not wanting to divulge too much info too quickly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I would be fine with a small trickle.
But right now the faucet is fused shut with cement and has a rubber cap on for good measure.
The issue with them moving out of their release window, is how they decided to handle the new Zelda. I was under the impression that they want a simultaneous release of both versions? If not, people may still want to wait for the NX version now that they know it exists. So delaying the NX would basically kill that games sales.
It is not a good game they are playing right now no matter how you look at it.
So they released the PS4/One generation in late 2017. Nintendo do will be joining the next generation party with a comparable generational machine 4 years late, sometime in 2017, probably with some wonky associated motion controller/dockable handheld/tablet/toaster monstrosity of a design that doubles the cost.

Thank you! Thank You! I'll be here all week ladies n gents, try the veal!
Man I kind of refuse to believe that the veal is that good at basically every restaurant with a comedy act. Some of them have got to be not worth trying.
nintendo needs to get out earlier than holiday of 2017. march is probably early but if they don't get out before july they will probably have trouble getting traction BY holiday 2017.

I totally agree. A March/April launch will get the initial hype and early adopters happy before pushing out a large surge of AAA titles for the holiday. The past has shown us repeatedly that you can launch with shitty games and people will buy your hardware. The difference though is that this isn't new hardware against new hardware. This is new vs old where you're not pushing the technology further out in terms of specs (well, we assume so at least).
Nintendo can get away with a softer launch via Zelda, but needs to crush the holiday if they want to hang. That means Mario Kart, a Mario game, and an exciting original IP or resurgent classic (Metroid?).

Assuming you can order in time before it instantly sells out.
Yeah this will absolutely happen too. It even happened with Wii U and I was able to get that on launch day absolutely no problem at Best Buy (they still had more when I left). I mean, even the amiibo still sell out crazy fast and there is a ton of supply for those now.
I'm sure I'll end up "camping" in the sense I'll probably get there an hour early. That's probably enough.
I guess the primary point of controversy is that they've basically dangled it in front of us with Zelda and then refused to say anything else. Even with no official announcement, the writing has been on the wall for a long, long time.

New guess...
Nintendo is waiting to reveal the NX until it is too late for MS and Sony to feasibly copy their gimmick on the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio. I think the Pro hardware has to be a done deal but MS still has plenty of time to finagle some half assed copy of NX gimmicks into the Scorpio.

I don't think it'll be THAT late, but March is starting to look unlikely. Maybe May?

I seriously doubt Nintendo will want to go past March with zero sales of a flagship console.

Breath of the Wild is far more compelling than anything released for Wii U in the past 3 years. Sorry, it's true.
