Can anyone confirm what exactly is happening defensively when she Ripostes? Wiki says it's a spell shield and it's a "parry". What is it blocking, exactly?

There's an amusing post on champion development. Because new champs go through so many different iterations in their development cycle, there's no point in creating new art because almost all of it gets scrapped. So instead, they just use existing animations and models that are representative of a champion - if it's something tanky and disruptive they'd use Alistar for an example they gave. I mentioned this a while ago in a post but for Kled, they had figured out they could just bind two models together so they shrunk down Hecarim and put a Gentleman Gnar on it, as seen here. Rek'sai's burrowed form was just Void Fizz's shark that developed an extreme love for the taste of dirt. The entire post can be found here.
Also regarding Riposte, it blocks everything but turret damage.
Oh hey the new Resolve keystone. Wonder what the cooldown on it is, if there is one.
Gain a shield when you inflict crowd control on an enemy.
... GLORIOUSLY INCANDESCENT.
Does Riot want me to main the everliving crap out of Taric? Because this and some of the new "Support/Tank" items is how you get me to main the everliving crap out of Taric.
Pre-game from Teamate: "Please, please don't go Taric jg. It is not a thing." So, while I was considering various options, I of course had to lock in Taric jg.
One feed Zed first blood, ruin an early jungle invasion, make their Olaf jg's life miserable, get every dragon, soling Trynd and Olaf, and saving my teamates lives with countless gank and jungle fight assists later...

Quinn JG. Fun. Squishy. But fun. Almost killing a full hp Darius who is two levels above me by careful use of Q and E was awesome. If I had remembered to use red smite, I would have probably won lol. I'm terrible at that,

The world breaker skin line is amazing. I have been meaning to pick up trundle forever, but between his skin and nautilus's skin, that is probably going to be a bundle I pickup.
Hm. Nautilus skin is fine, but I still think I prefer the base skin and still want to see chromas for it.
It seems slightly dumb that I have skins for various champions but not one for the guy I have the most mastery points on (which of course doesn't represent the champion I've spent the most time playing overall--that's probably still Sivir (...3 skins) probably with Caitlyn second (0 skins, still mean to get the chroma some time).)
...also I am now 1-4 in my placements with my solo laner smurf. It legit might place into bronze. Solo lanes are so hard
1) Farm. Just like playing AD. Farm well and you'll carry just through gold advantage.
2) Nearly all mids and a lot of tops are reliant on abilities for damage. That means you should trade back, even if you get chunked initially when they go in on you, because their abilities will be on CD and their damage output while waiting on those abilities will be crap.
3) Know your power windows. When can you win an all in. When can't you. Having a level advantage top lane is huge because bruisers/tanks get lots of base stats from leveling. Mid lane it's not as big a deal except early level 2 vs level 1 cheese and also if you ding 6 first you can surprise your opponent with an all in. Mid lane power windows are more about items I think.
4) Don't go for an all in without knowing where the enemy jungler is.
5) If you get a lead top you can either push and pressure (this will draw the jungler up so either prepare to 2v1 or have deep enough wards that you don't throw your lead). Or you can freeze and deny cs/exp. I prefer to freeze if I don't have flash up. If you freeze be prepared to back ping your mid every time your lane opponent goes MIA, as many choose to roam if they can't break the freeze.
6) If you get a lead mid you should always push and roam IMO. Gank bot if you can. Gank top if bot isn't an option. If neither is an option go get jungle vision and/or kill their jungler.
7) If you fall behind, hug turret and blame your jungler.

1. yes. I really just need to get more practice on individual champions because my csing is *abysmal*. And I am, I'd say, relatively good on csing on adc! So I know it's possible for me, I just have to get better at it on various champs by focusing harder.
2. I think this is one of my main problems--backing off after I take damage instead of trading back. I can initiate trades and then back off, but if the other guy initiates I'm like 'eek' and my instinct is to retreat and that is not correct I think.
3. yep knowing power windows is just going to come with practice on various champions. Fortunately this account only has, like, 5-6 top+mid laners, so I'll be forced to learn specific champions.
4. I have gotten better at not committing when I think the enemy jungler is near during early laning, but then I get complacent later.
5. ....I haven't yet gotten a solid lead toplane ;_;
6. Yeah roams are my new plan mid. What is not my plan (...any more) is sticking around feebly autoattacking the mid turret at 30% hp until the jungler comes and ganks me or the midlaner I just kills comes back and kills me because COME ON how stupid can I get here.
7. Ok I gotta be honest my junglers have been complete and total crap here and my Rengar single-handedly lost my most recent game (I single-handedly lost a couple of the others though). I'm playing at much lower elo than my other account I believe, so I need to not trust junglers at all unless they show some sort of competence.
This is all very helpful! Although we'll see how much I play on this account when the assassin changes roll out. I guess I'll have to save IP and buy assassins since the whole goal is to become the solo carry I always dreamed of instead of the profoundly team-reliant botlaner.
CSing on other roles that aren't ADC is a whole different animal for sure. When you start playing midlaners and you don't have AD runes and a D blade and you don't have the mana to CS with spells yet it's a whole different and much tougher life early on, hah.

Speaking of League, watching worlds has me wanting to actually play again, which I haven't done since about a year ago. Anybody have a guide or something that might help me catch up on all the changes on the fly? I know masteries changed, I know the dragon has different iterations that spawn now, etc.
Do I need to buy new runes or were there major changes to which runes are good?
I wonder after a year off if I can get back into gold.

Runes are pretty much still the same. I think scaling runes were buffed before you stopped playing. They're useful now, depending on the champ/matchup. Flat is fine too though.
Mostly you just pick your mastery and the rest of the tree is fairly straightforward. Thunderlords for burst, Fervor for sustained damage, Deathfire touch for poke. I'm not really familiar with the other masteries.

The ultiity tree has grasp of the undying that is pretty good on a lot of tanky initiators who don't have an innate heal (and still hilariously great on Maokai) where you get a heal on a successful attack every four seconds in combat with a champion.
There's also the stacking hp on that is the jungle mastery de jure where your max hp goes up to 300 hp.

You have about 2 weeks until the season ends.
go go go go!
And honestly just use champion.gg for winrates and builds, then play like a normals to feel how tough the dragons are. Tower first blood is probably the biggest/most relevant change as it gives a big boost to your team. I can't really think of what else is super big this season.

Depending on where you place I'd say Gold is reasonable. I was in Silver I after placements but climbing out was pretty easy.
A lot of the mages and ADCs have been changed. Not sure if you were around for the juggernaut update that was about a year ago: Mordekaiser is pretty different and can get a dragon ghost, Skarner got yet another comprehensive rework, and Darius and Garen got changed. Yorick's completely different, as are Ryze, Poppy, and Taric.

Quinn's also just really fun to play. One of the best champs at map mobility, plus plenty of burst and kite.

Kite is really a 1v1 thing, since as soon as too many other people join in even brief CC leads to exploding. For the most part it's just keep running away while shooting (another reason it's not really a teamfight thing - this ends with you way out of the fight).
You can't turn too much or you'll get caught too (because they get to cut the corner to catch up)

Around the juggernaut update was probably the last time I played. At the time I stopped playing Xin was pretty strong in the jungle and I was playing a lot of that.
Last season I kind of started maining ADC instead of jungle just out of boredom more than anything. I don't know what kind of stuff I'll try to play this season. I like assassins and I heard they're getting an update, so maybe i'll lean that way.
Courage of the Colossus:
"Gain a shield for 10+ 10 per level + 7% of your maximum health for each nearby enemy champion for 4 seconds after hitting an enemy champion with hard CC (30 second cooldown)"
The in game value is different, however.
Fervor of Battle stacks ten times again and increases AD by 1-6 per stack which is going to make it even more favorable on champs that already take it since it's no longer an on hit damage number.

Just had a first. A teammate got a penta kill where he killed four of the enemies in an ace, then another when they respawned and it still was counted as a penta.
..... I may have been the one who killed someone during the ace to deny the "true" penta. Also the hexa.

Ok won a solo lane ranked game although I got carried and probably contributed mildly negatively to my team's overall wellbeing.
I was Annie vs Talon. I gave up first blood as I saw an elise cocoon aimed poorly...and flashed into it.
Talon roamed all day long and bot was pushed in so I also had to roam bot...so I didn't cs at all. 100 cs in 20 mintues level of bad.
I only (...only) missed one Tibbers this game...but I was slow to reach my build and half the time my target got Thresh lanterned to safety/shielded from the ignite that would have killed them.
But my top Nasus went like 13/2 so it didn't really matter.
This is so hard...if I had my full champion pool available I probably would have played Diana as a counter, but my mid options on this account are pretty limited. And then as Diana I would have had a bunch of fail assassinations anyway...
I am personally sick and tired of whenever I play solo, if I'm playing a tank, no one knows to follow up on my engage. Or if I'm damage, our tank or engage is a scaredy cat. I have had three top kennens who are all afraid to flash ult in, or they do it to try to end a fight when everyone is dead already.
No dude, your ult isn't to try to last hit champions, we need you to ult in an lock down the enemy team with your mass stun so we can win the fight in the first place. Like seriously fuck.
Also I suck again in toplane, this time as fiora. I had two games, both I got FB solo at like level 2 or even 1, then get camped and shit on all lane phase and am useless. I also do not understand how I can get FB, then get soloed by nasus when he comes back to lane. Shit.

At least you have a tank when you're playing damage
Pretty much every game if I don't pick a tanky jungler we get dicked. Or even if I pick one that prefers to built damage first, everyone else is also squishy and so we get dicked. In fact, we might even have no engage at all so we get double dicked.

The greatest favour I ever did myself was to get completely shitfaced and playing all my placements. Because that's now where I've set the bar. The bar is 8 consecutive losses, where both myself and team-mates were horrible!
For anything to be worse, there has to be some real effort, so now I can just shrug and move on. Which is incredibly liberating.
E: The personal shop only got me skins for champs I already have a bajillion skins for, the High Noon Jhin skin I don't like, and Lunar Caitlyn for 70% off. So now I have to alternate out of pink Cait every now and then.

My shop was pretty terrible. Nothing greater than a 50% discount, and I own better skins for all the champions they offered (except the measly 20% off Ashen Lord Aurelion Sol). Urf Kench is probably still a buy, though.
Also, intentionally setting a low bar for yourself makes some sense. I'll probably always think of my placements this season that way.

Kennen is an ADC and nothing you do will convince me otherwise
In more serious news, Doombots are live again, which I thought wouldn't happen until tomorrow.

Um...who were you playing?

Quinn's also just really fun to play. One of the best champs at map mobility, plus plenty of burst and kite.

If only I could figure out kite in an actual fight...lol
Kite is really a 1v1 thing, since as soon as too many other people join in even brief CC leads to exploding. For the most part it's just keep running away while shooting (another reason it's not really a teamfight thing - this ends with you way out of the fight).
You can't turn too much or you'll get caught too (because they get to cut the corner to catch up)

Headless Hecarim! Zombie Brand! Lollipoppy! Haunted Maokai! Headmistress Fiora! I'm gonna be broke as fuck the weekend!
And discount shops. A little disappointed in my selection, but I might end up with 1 or 2 of the 6.
"Gain a shield for 10+ 10 per level + 7% of your maximum health for each nearby enemy champion for 4 seconds after hitting an enemy champion with hard CC (30 second cooldown)"
The in game value is different, however.
Fervor of Battle stacks ten times again and increases AD by 1-6 per stack which is going to make it even more favorable on champs that already take it since it's no longer an on hit damage number.
..... I may have been the one who killed someone during the ace to deny the "true" penta. Also the hexa.

Shit.
Right before revive was removed, they changed how pentakills were scored, and I got my first two on Zombie Karthus.
I miss that cheese soooo much
Joe's Stream.
Pretty much every game if I don't pick a tanky jungler we get dicked. Or even if I pick one that prefers to built damage first, everyone else is also squishy and so we get dicked. In fact, we might even have no engage at all so we get double dicked.
I did it.
Get owned Heimerdingler : (
The greatest favour I ever did myself was to get completely shitfaced and playing all my placements.
