So, 9:19 PM EST, no confirmation email for me. I got my order in at 6 minutes past the hour. I guess they're distributing by region. People in CA are getting theirs today, while people here in Ohio aren't even getting a shipping confirmation or tracking number. I don't get it. I guess I should probably give up hope of it getting here by Wednesday, or this week at this rate.
Haven't heard of anyone in my state getting shipping info yet, but it launches tomorrow and while it was nice hoping some people got them earlier than they claimed.
Gives me a day or two more to get my space setup.
Gotta pickup some shelves from the consignment place. Too many damn books everywhere
Wow that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
"We REFUSE to over-deliver for our clients; we hate them you see. And you too."
No, actually, it makes a lot of sense.
They charge pretty highly for overnight shipping. They charge a lot less for, like, two-day or three-day shipping.
They don't want people to pay for two-day / three-day, and get overnight service. Otherwise, why pay for overnight?
You aren't really saving them any money by picking things up at the facility, so there's no upside to them enabling this type of behavior.
I take your point.
However I feel like the negative perception derived from seeing your package on struck, then returned a facility you can't pick up from, outweighs the overall intention of providing a delineated service.
If they want to do this they need to hide the actual state of the package - for example, DHL is currently doing this to me on another package (a graphics card); the fact that they won't let me pick it up (due to contractual reasons with shipper) doesn't make me want to use their service more, it actually will mean in future I will choose ANY other service other than DHL, or order from another supplier, in order to avoid being stung by them in this way in future.
TheBlu is roomscale, I'm sorry I missed that thread of posts. It's roomscale without needing to know it's roomscale that is part of the beauty. You can walk around you can use the controllers with effect. You don't need to think about it you just do it.

I don't feel like FedEx or UPS would do you any better. The cost differences between different service levels are pretty large, and include 3 day shipping, second day air, second day air AM, next day air and next day air AM. I think most of their income comes from commercial customers, who would treat it as a business decision -- if they really wanted it that much sooner, they would have paid the extra cost. They already time-budgeted for goods sitting around in a warehouse.

Ah but in my city, FedEx allows pickup from their sorting facility at the airport, so in my circumstances FedEx will always be the preferred shipper.
From a commercial shipping perspective, if I were choosing a shipping service I would select the one most accommodating for my customers - I am charging shipping costs anyway, so that is a clear advantage I obtain.

What's a fantastic pair of open back headphones with a removable cord that I could use on the Vive without an amp?
Koss Porta Pro maybe? Same open back drivers used in the Rift, goes the speculation.

I've seen some other posts elsewhere about how FedEx is putting our Vives inside of glass cases in front of us, and telling us we can't touch them until Wednesday despite being right there.

That's really just a continuation of how it's felt to follow VR all these years. "Oh man this stuff's incredible! DON'T TOUCH IT'S NOT FOR YOU YET. But seriously you're gonna love it I SAID NO TOUCHING."

The future is being delivered by nuns with yardsticks.
It seems like htc will not send out waves and instead just keep sending out units. Will be interesting to see if they can keep pace with their estimations or if they will fall behind.

A certain amount of batching is always to be expected. Unless you're shipping from literally one warehouse globally, you can't do true rolling shipping.
Better get my frakking shipping confirmation this morning.
I know right? Still nothing here too. I'm oscillating between "pissed" and "sad" every so often. I just want SOMETHING from HTC to let me know what's up.

True. But even if they ship their main batches every day or every second day or even every week it should be possible to follow their progress on reddit. They must've stored up units for launch. Question is if they feel they are far enough ahead to just start shipping things with economy freight as soon as they can make them without having this getting people upset.
The VP of VR at HTC is tweeting a lot this morning, and he's so full of utter dogshit that it's making my head hurt. A partial list of his totally fabricated assertions;
1) they have timestamps of every order AND orders are being processed "in order"
2) Paypal orders are not being prioritized over Credit Card orders
3) they are shipping in order, not shipping by region
All three easily refuted by looking at the thousands of collated responses on the Vive subreddit, all people listing their order time, confirmation time, location, payment method, ship status, etc. Several regions of the US have not received any at all. People who ordered with Paypal at +10 minutes have received shipping information, whereas other people (myself included) who ordered in the first 2 minutes with credit cards have received nothing.
Lots of Vive reviews out now and it all seems to confirm what many people thought, the Vive and Rift are both very similar and are being reviewed about the same. The pros for Vive of course are motion controllers but the lack of any "polished" games is a con. All reviews spend a lot of time talking about how long that initial setup takes and how trying to move the setup is something most people just won't do. They also go into more detail about how the straps and cabling on the Vive are a bit tougher to work with, but ultimately it sounds like you can still get it comfortable enough. Display wise they say the FOV is slightly taller in the Vive but it's almost not really noticeable, and these are people who have used both headsets for some time. It seems that the glare issue is slightly more pronounced in the Rift, but it's not an issue in experiences in either HMD.
Regardless, I think the fact that the reviews in general come to the rough same conclusions for both means that you'll likely be happy with either device that you purchase. They both need time to mature, the Vive with its library and the Rift with its motion controllers. I mean, the Rift could use some more titles too, but it's all pretty standard for launching something new.
I will say with 100% certainty that the Rift needs motion controllers and the sooner the better. Most of these reviews go on the assumption that the time to mature is going to be similar for both headsets but if we don't get more news on the Touch soon or it's "late H2" then the Vive clearly has an advantage. As it stands right now though they both have potential to be extremely solid hardware.

Totally agree. They'll get a pass for a few weeks while everyone is just focused on Rift ship dates, but by the end of the month they really need to give some kind of news on the Touch release schedule.

Software takes a while as well. Waiting for the Touch controllers isn't a big deal because their usefulness is limited. I mean, that video was awesome, don't get me wrong, I was grinning like a fool throughout it, but none of it looked like stuff I would do more than a couple hours at most. It's going to be a while before really compelling stuff comes out.
However, the immediately polished and compelling experiences (For me, at least) won't use touch controls. Racing sims and space sims. I have a wheel. I have a HOTAS. I can wait for the Touch.

I'd like to add that Subnautica is updated on Steam for the Rift now.
........
And THAT would be a mind blowing experience with touch controls.
Jesus.
Okay, now I'm starting to feel impatient. :P Thanks alot.
With regards to shipping and intentionally holding packages to the latest delivery time, that's not how most carriers do it. You can see how long it takes to ship a UPS shipment via ground, it is 1-5 days depending on distance. If you ship a UPS package across town, or even inside the state its only going to take a day. They won't put a package on a delivery truck and then take it back because it's before the agreed upon time. There would have to be some sort of special slow contract between them and the shipper.
I've never shipped something that way so I can only speak to the regular options. What carrier is being used to ship the vives?

Your balanced and accurate analysis of the competing hardware units leaves me feeling neither vindicated in my existing point of view, nor outraged at your dumbness for not also ascribing to my point of view.
I don't know how to respond to that
On a more serious note, I used that Chrome trick to check my exact Rift order time. Apparently I wasn't able to get my credit card past their crushed, melting servers until 8:24am (I started at exactly 8:00 and their site threw nebulous payment processing errors at me until then). The way things have been going with their shipments, I guess I should be expecting a Rift some time in May.

Yeah, I work in a slightly different field to parcel distribution, but the idea of somebody intentionally holding on to an easy delivery just because they weren't paying the higher rate seems absurd to me. Like, you've already been paid, unless you've been instructed specifically not to give it to the customer until after a set date, you want it off your hands as soon as possible so you don't have to worry about sending someone to deliver it.
