Headset came, I set it all up and it's not working. When I display in mirror mode my monitor shows everything that I should be seeing, but when I put on the headset it's just dark. The light on the side is green and everything is tracking. HELP what do I do?!
You're sure all the wires are plugged in correctly?
Unplugged and replugged everything, rebooted a couple of times. It finally decided to work, all good now.
Sorry, I forgot to send out the ACK that I did get to play with Vive before you to unlock your set. All good now.
I assume the same way you do the cable for the headset- you just do.
the cable for the HMD, though, is anchored firmly to your head, draped over your back, and then lays along the ground. The headphones one has to go down from your left ear and then come back up again to the plug on the HMD, so you're going to have this swinging pendulum loop of cable. I feel like a third party shorter headset cable would be mandatory.

this controller wanted a firmware update and now I'm just waiting like 5 minutes for it to update it just has a warning not to unplug it or plug something new in or do anything what would change my system or else the controller might brick this is taking way too long
So I just showed that Valve Vive demo video to my son who thought it was cool then he started asking about Minecraft and I found this video and showed him and he and my daughter got pretty excited...
You know the joke where someone is told to take a number, they take a ticket and it's some insanely high number, then the camera pans to the counter on the wall and it's on like, 3? Cue laugh track.

Yeah, these past couple of days are making me realize that I am fucked when May comes around. All I have is an e-mail that says "May", and if I'm being realistic that probably means the latter half of May. But I will have absolutely no idea until it actually ships, so I will be checking my bank account and e-mail for shipping notifications 10 times a day.

By the way, for anyone who was considering a Pascal card, there was no news about consumer GPUs at the latest conference just now, so we can probably expect no Pascal consumer cards until very late 2016 or early 2017.

Feeling pretty vindicated in my 980Ti purchase.

Absolutely. As much as I loved my 980, the extra 40% performance is crucial with the Rift. Even Pascal came out next month, my 980 Ti was still worth it.
This sort of feels like me wanting the Rift or Vive to suck to make my purchasing decision easier, but hooray not wasting $600 on this new graphics card.

During the week I thought I was going to cancel my Rift and jump on day 1 Vive preorders, I was planning on making my own headphone cable for the Vive. I have Sennheisers and the cords they come with are notoriously crazy long even for normal use, and even the 3rd party ones are longer than I think you'd want for a Vive. My plan was to buy a 3rd party wire I'd use exclusively for VR, and cut it down to the perfect length myself.

The 980ti is $1,000 up here in Canada, plus shipping since I live in Yellowknife, so that's not going to happen.
I can only hope for broad SLI support since I have two 970s.
Err... Isn't a single 970 supposed to be good enough?
Good enough, yes, but there's a difference between good enough and best, like always.
The 970 is expected to run things at 90 FPS on what could be considered equivalent to Medium settings, while the 980Ti so far seems to be able to crank up a few notches.

Except in Elite Dangerous, where to get reasonable resolution you have to run at low/medium, even on a 980 Ti...but that's an ED problem, not a GPU problem.

Ok. As long as it's relatively smooth at that. I could always upgrade but I'd rather not. Thanks

The Rift's asynchronous timewarp feature is also fucking wizardry so you'll be fine even if you don't quite hit 90FPS.
Yeah I have a feeling that May shipping date may not be accurate anymore. I was very dumb for listening to HTC say there would be no supply issues like the Rift before their pre-orders went live.

Well, oculus said they wouldn't have supply issues either, and look what ended up happening. Not only did estimates get pushed way back, but the actual launch was a shambles as well.
Both companies seriously underestimated demand and overestimated their capabilities.

So they're doing just as well as any other tech launch! >.>
Is anything about the vive launch beyond conjecture yet? Htc reps responses seem incompatible with what's actually happening but nothing official has come through about supply issues.
showed vive to two coworkers. both gave good reacrtions to TheBlu. yesssss, yesssssss

Well guys, I think if you haven't gotten a notice now you're not going to. I, too, had some correspondence with Dan O'Brien on twitter. Got him to follow me and we chatted a bit. Seems like a nice guy and I am glad he was willing to help me, but... read on and tell me what you think.

Looks like used 970s are worth about $350-400 CAD. Could you sell both for a 980Ti?
But I'd have to buy the 980ti and hope I can recover the money. It's a bit awkward with the charge for the Rift coming anytime in the next 3 months.

Apparently estimated shipping is May? Really? I figured they would be backed up to June or July by this point?
Hmm..
-Big-ass tax return
-reasonable shipping timeframe
-computer is apprently Vive ready
-Have at least a 4x8 foot space available
Almost, Vive. You almost got me.

At this point I would not believe any estimated shipping date HTC coughs up.
FYI minimum recommended room-scale space size is 6.5 x 5.0 feet. Seated experiences work fine in smaller spaces, but you're missing out on some stuff.
