[Virtual Reality] Rift & Vive out now! darleysam finally receives Reality Escape Helmet
Posts
I you guys in this thread so much. It helps immensly. Also my computer makes a funny (not very bothersome) noise when running the steam VR app. I think it's coils of the PSU or something. It's not very loud or annoying.
I'm also totally green on performance now so just waiting for the Vive to arrive.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm just going to stare at my email for the rest of the day week.
Yeah I'm basically doing the e-mail equivalent of staring at the phone and picking it up every few minutes to make sure there's still a dial tone.
I'm not even expecting mine until next month, and realistically the end of it (since I don't know whether their 'April' orders will be sent out in one block, or in stages throughout the month), but I keep checking my email just in case hey it could happen.
Gmail probably noticing a huge bandwidth spike as a result.
I'm a 26er, my order time was 12 seconds after they went live (according to the preorder_time). I just happened to refresh the store page a minute or so before "live" time and it was there, I couldn't resist.
Hm. I was a 25er at 6 minutes past. Fingers crossed I hear soon, I guess?
The excitement. It cannot be contained.
e: Just looked at Palmer Luckey's twitter, and he does say pre-orders will start shipping today, so we'll see.
e2: I am also a 25'er.
@GnomeTank - for what it's worth it looks like they're going by order time, and it looks like they're doing orders confirmed around 8:03am PST at the moment.
Pretty impressive if you ask me. Something of note: The cable does detach from the headset. This means that there's nothing really stopping them from including a longer cable with the Touch if they need to (though I'm not holding my breath). Or even just offering longer cables for sale.
I don't know...according to G-mail I got my confirmation at 8:01:58 PST, and mine hasn't shipped yet...so.
Well, then I've got nothing.
Do you know your preorder_time? Or at least roughly how long after it went live you ordered? The actual order number seems more or less useless in this case other than general "ballpark". For example, we know 30+ orders definitely have later ship dates but 24-27 seem to all fall around each other without any real reasoning.
Apparently these things are also shipping next day air (assuming they're using the same method as they did for the kickstarter ones, I don't see why not). Even if it doesn't ship till tomorrow for some reason you may still have it Friday.
Of course this all depends on if you're US or not. I haven't heard any confirmation of any international orders yet, hopefully those get moving soon too.
buybuybuybuybuybuy obviously a fake. someone 3d printed that phone.
I'm US. I got the confirmation email at 8:01:58 PST according to G-Mail, so my order would have been sometime about 30-60 seconds before that. The next day air thing is interesting, as I am on the same coast as Oculus. Perhaps they are shipping by distance or something, who knows. I assume I should hear something today or tomorrow.
Hey, I just ran across this video from Veronica Belmont, where she answers pretty much this very question.
Check it out.

*edit
tldr of the video:
You'll see in VR just like you do irl. You might experience a little more motion blur than other people, and some objects may not "pop" like they would for others (lack of depth).
I am.
Whelp now it's impossible for the Rift to arrive prior to the 5th unless they've already shipped and haven't updated yet... Guess I will have to be satisfied with YouTube clips this weekend!
Same, so to sum up the video which matches what else has been said in this thread:
They asked Jessica Conditt (who works for Engadget) to answer the questions, who basically just says VR headsets work so great because they basically trick your brain into think it's actually just straight up seeing it. You'll likely have similar issues that you already have with depth perception and there might be more motion blur, but all in all VR still works for you.
She also answered a question about glasses. She said PSVR was probably her best experience in regards to them and Rift was definitely the worst. Her glasses are fairly large and thick framed, so this matches about what we've thought. They still fit in the Rift but there was added pressure for sure and wasn't that comfy. She also notes, and this is the first time I've heard it in regards to the Vive w/ glasses, that the Vive had some definite light leak at the bottom when wearing her glasses. It could also be because of how it was adjusted, she wasn't sure.
Hype levels critical.
EDIT: Also who thought this was a good idea

(Clearly there's an opportunity here for a room-scale game where you dodge moving furniture)
I haven't looked but it doesn't strike me as something with a public demo.
Edit: To be clear, that's the point of VR to be immersive, but to go crawling along or pull the faces in that video seems to be a case by case basis. Also, wonder what happens if you jump.

Are they wearing crocs with foot trackers? That's a cool idea.
There better be video of this.
I think you're underestimating how convincing VR can be. Videos don't do it justice at all, the added depth when you're actually in there goes a long way.
Also, just got my tracking number and my EVE: Valkyrie code! Me for the next 24 hours:
Possible! I'll find out sooner or later (hopefully with that exact 'game' but sadly doubt it).
Is this only applicable to AMD? Will Nvidia have their cards on the table this summer, or at least their non-budget models? If the next generation is arriving in 2017 then I could stand to build a system now (well, in 2 weeks) and put in something passable for now.
About how expensive would I budget a system where the performance scales up in line with cost? I don't mind paying a few thousand dollars overall, but if it's like an RPG where the best-best components cost 15 times more for 5% higher stats then I can live with second best.
Yeah, I feel super dumb for not even trying to get an early Vive pre-order; I had my PC ready to go at that point. Now I'm waiting until May, booooo.
I have a feeling that Kickstarter backers and early pre-orderers in Australia will get their Rifts at the same time. There can't be more than a few hundred KS backers in Australia, and they're not likely to send a few hundred by themselves.
Have you considered the Vive? It's more or less an equal quality headset, with motion controllers to boot, and will definitely ship sooner than the Rift if you're preordering either right now.
edit: oh, maybe you meant the Vive.
