PAX East 2015 Magical Mystery Tour of Boston!

Twitter: PAX_MMT Follow this to keep track of where we are in real time. Very useful if you want to join up partway through!

Who: You! And me. And other PAX peeps. AKA your future friends.
What: Visit interesting places in and around Boston.
Where: Schedule TBD below.
When: The two days before PAX: Wed 4/20 and Thurs 4/21. Traditionally runs from 9am to 5pm but you don't have to do the whole thing.
Why: See something of Boston other than the convention center and your hotel. And do it with cool people!
How: Boston's public transit. We'll be using the T (subway and buses) to get around. You can by a pass for $19 that will get you unlimited rides for a week. (Better than paying $2.50 per ride!) When we leave the morning meetups, I'll be making sure everyone has a pass.

Schedule:
It's a little loose with the times because I found at south that it's more fun if I'm not constantly watching the clock.

Wednesday:
9-9:30 meet in front of bcec
9:30 off to Bunker hill, uss constitution museum, lunch @ Cheers
3pm Fenway

Thursday:
9-9:30 meet in front of bcec
9:30 off to independence
12pm freedom trail
Followed by lunch at Faneuil hall, common or uss constitution

We're going to do this different this year. Because Fallout.
Since I don't play, tell me what Boston landmarks and places are in Fallout 4. We'll try to hit up as many of the real world versions as we can.

Surprisingly, I've never played Fallout. I am, however, really looking forward to this this year!

Bunker hill, Fenway, Freedom Trail, Boston Common, will check my map when I get home, but these I remember off the top of my head

The freedom trail is incredibly important in Fallout 4.

And yeah, bunker hill and fenway play a large part too, as was said above. I don't remember as much in boston common but it's been awhile since I put the game down.

Oh, right, the USS Constitution! and MIT.

Also Boston Public Library. Faneuil hall. The state house. Fort Independence (called The Castle in the game). One of the coolest easter eggs I think is if you go a bit west of Boston Common there's a bar called Prost, which translates in German to Cheers. Guess what you'll find inside :)

But seriously, once you garner some additional info I'll put this up on the event thread.

    Thanks!

The Red Sox are playing a day game on Thursday at 1:35pm, so if you want to do a tour of the park you should plan it for Wednesday (they play at 7:10pm so the last tour will depart at 4:10pm - 3 hours before game time). The Fenway tour is about an hour and well worth it, especially if you want to see the inside of Diamond City.

It should be brought up, then, that the whole Fenway area will be a nightmare to get around on those two days (even on days with evening games, isn't it?).

Oooh. Love the Fallout-themed tour idea! Watching this space since Hubs & I will definitely be in.

It won't be too bad if you go in late morning/early afternoon on Wednesday. Since it's a weekday, the area won't be too crazy until closer to game time (5pm or so). I used to work around the corner from Fenway and only the weekend games (and playoffs) would have a serious up-tick in activity that early before a 7pm game.

Ooooh, I'm PAX-ing solo this year and Enforcing. Assuming no enforcer obligations on Thursday I should be available from like noon and later.

Sounds fun....I haven't started playing Fallout 4 yet but ill be carrying some fallout gear.

    Ok here's my plan:
    Wednesday:
Bunker hill, uss constitution museum, lunch @cheers, common or uss constitution
    Thursday:
Fort independence, Fenway (noon tour), lunch at Faneuil hall, freedom trail

The constitution museum and actual ship are different things that exist in different places. Depending on our timing, we might be able to go over to the ship after lunch (last tour leaves at 3:30, but I can't find more specific tour times and info)

You'll need to purchase a ticket for the Fenway tour. We'll go to the noon tour on Thursday. This link should take you to the correct place: http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/MLBEventInfo

    Edit: recajiggering. Stay tuned...

Wow, this is awesome. However is there a chance of doing some touring outside typical business hours? I will be busy 9-5 before PAX.

  • acaraba2acaraba2 Tampa, FLRegistered User regular
The link for the Fenway tour doesn't work since it tries to take you directly to buying but cant. Here's the link to page then click buy tickets boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/ballpark/tour.jsp

What time do you think the lunch break would be on Thursday? If its early enough me and my friend might join you for fort independence and the freedom trail then break away to go to the red socks game.

Quick note about the USS Constitution: It's currently being worked on in dry dock, but you can still visit it. It's only open from 2:30-6pm, so plan a time table that works around that. (The museum is open from 9-6pm.)

    From their website:
"Constitution is still open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis during their operating hours. Please be aware that visitors must pass through a security inspection and show federal or state photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, before embarking on USS Constitution."

@punzie If you could have some more accurate scheduling details that would be great.

IE, what time for the first stop and gathering location.

I'll be catching Bunker Hill and the USS Constitution after Noon tomorrow (when I get in) if there are any stragglers. :)

Today was fun. The weather was great, we all managed to climb the 294 stairs in bunker hill monument, and the uss constitution museum was really good! I hope tomorrow is just as good

Sorry I missed you guys this time. I hope everyone had a lot of fun! My "mystery tour" today consisted of a tour of one of my hotel's inner stairways thanks to construction setting off the fire alarm while I was wrapping up some things for work. Not so magical. :)

I hope to swing by the Westin tonight for a bit though after I leave the Made in MA party, so hopefully I can meet a few new faces!

Many thanks to Punzie for another successful tour - those of you continuing on to the Pre-PAX dinner, please have a fantastic time there as well!
