FYI if there are two lenses alive when Evrae Altana dies the second time, you lose. Evrae explodes for 25% of your health, and each mirror explodes for 40% of your health, for a tasty 105% HP damage to everybody in your party. The mirrors also explode if you use Raise on them, but do not explode if killed normally. Mirrors 1, 3 and 4 (from top to bottom) can be depowered if you Esuna them, mirror 3 can be depowered with dispel. This depowerment lasts for a short time only, so you can really only depower the current one and the next one in line. Easier to kill them.

4* Masamune from VII
"I will write your name in the ruin of them. I will paint you across history in the color of their blood."
Generally speaking, anything less than 5* base isn't particularly noteworthy. They'll do work for you for a while until you get a better collection of items, and if you happen to get multiples of the same item, 3++ and 4++ items can still be useful, especially in their native realm. For that reason, you probably don't want to discard 4* items for a long time, if ever.
edit: exception for things that resist a status or element, or that boost a particular element, those can be pretty helpful. The item's description will let you know whether that's the case. Weapons that inflict statuses aren't that exciting; while occasionally they can help, most bosses are immune to most statuses, and the chance to hit with a status effect on a weapon is very low...UNLESS it's attacking one of your allies (you messed up while trying to Retaliate, or someone got Confused, or you're trying to clear Sleep/Confuse), then the chance of the status landing increases dramatically. That's not me complaining about RNG, the formulas that determine whether status effects land are actually different for enemies and party members.

This is pretty untrue; there are a lot of really excellent 4* items.
4++ items can be quite useful, about the only 4* useful as-is that I know of is that one helm from FFVI I think (Crystal Helm maybe?). I do have several 4++ axes that are 190+ attack with synergy, and some 4++ swords as well that are useful.
Unarguably, I'd say a 4* armor is more valuable than a 4* weapon. Weapons are much more ubiquitous, and due to the power creep in the game, a new 5* weapon appearing on an event banner will be better than any 4++ weapon from the realm any day. Even the generic no-SB 5*s usually put on banners as a booby prize are swapped out and updated. 4++ weapons are only good if you completely lack synergy from that realm, but that changes immediately upon any new/recent 5* being pulled. The exceptions are weapon types. Swords, staves, rods and daggers are everywhere. Not a lot of other weapon types. If you somehow manage to 4++ an axe or hammer, you might as well consider that your rainbow pull. You not only got "lucky" enough to pull 3 of the same rare weapon type, but they're just as strong as any 5* of that weapon because DeNA hasn't put any new weapons of that type out with power creep.
Armors have also been getting the power creep treatment. Used to be that most armors were just basic DEF/RES items, with the exception of hats and bracers, but even now, a 5* armor of any type will typically be better than a 4+ item, while a 4++ can be on par. Again though, depends on the item. We don't see too many actual body armor pieces with extra stats (few heavy armors with a piddly +5 PWR here and there, Y'shtola's Healer Robe was one of the first for anything significant being +20 MND) and that is only going to become more prevalent going forward. Hats have certainly been given more item stat growth, same with bracers.
We don't see too many new heavy helms, so it's hard to comment, and they may be the only 4++ armor that compares usefully to a 5*, but there's only a few of them, and Crystal Helm is the best of the bunch. 4* Shields are no longer worth keeping because new shields now all come with more DEF/RES and a chunk of PWR.
If you have any liking for Kuja or Zidane as characters, then yes. Zidane is actually a pretty good thief type character, wide selection of skills, powerful in his own right. Kuja's a full-fledged 5* Black, White and Darkness caster, so as mage types go, the only thing he's missing is Summon magic. Either of their SSB relics will be powerful. However, the rest of the relics on the banner are only okay.
The second banner is the better one, with Beatrix's superior SSB, Garnet and Eiko's relics that both provide Haste and healing (and in Garnet's case, also increases magic resistance) and a great relic for Kuja that when you use the Soul Break, boosts Dark damage by 50%. Your odds of pulling something more "useful" are better on the second banner.

I've been playing this game since the first event. I've been lucky enough to draw pretty good physical weapon synergy for every realm but VIII - and even now, I most certainly include 4++ axes in "pretty good synergy" - but armor is much rarer if you mostly draw during Fests, which is what I've done. It wasn't until the FFT banner that I acquired enough 5* armor (a couple of bangles and Kaiser Shield) to consistently rely on for my front line - but that's just a baseline that's often supplanted by superior RS items, several of which are 4*++ or even 3*++. And I still use a mix of 3*++, 4*++ and 5* armor for my back line and a few 4*+ and 4*++ weapons to fill gaps. Don't underestimate the free 3* armors handed out in events! (Hello, Brigandine!) Their defensive stats with RS are superior to any non-RS 5* armor.
My general rule now is to keep all 4* items unless I've clearly filled my RS requirements for that realm. One thing to note: If you have an SSB/BSSB physical weapon in a highly portable type, particularly dagger or sword, I suggest fully enhancing it with Rosetta Stones. It's a good way to fill gaps in realms where you're lacking in weapon synergy. My 143 atk (20/20) Orichalcum Dagger+ has been a clear MVP.

Name some 4* items that are inherently "excellent"? Crystal Helm VI got mentioned above, and I agree (defensive stats aren't that much worse than a 5*, has a bunch of ATK). Most of the value of 4* items is either A) because you got multiples of an item, or you have a deficiency in that realm/item type that you need to patch up. Either way, that would be readily apparent, and someone wouldn't need to ask whether the item is good.
Bah. I championed Bahamut, but I just can't put out the deeps to master him. Unless I dump a bunch of wind/power orbs into another Aeroa Strike, which seems counterproductive.

Unless you're a whale, you will NEVER have a full complement of 5* RS armor, and it will be a LONG time before you have a full set of 5* RS weapons. 4* items, and even 3* items, are "inherently excellent" because they are excellent with RS. For example, Crystal Helm, Royal Crown, Hypno Crown and Thornlet, and to a lesser extent Brigandine, Diamond Vest and Mirage Vest; and weapons such as Maneater and Gladius. The point is that every item you draw should be evaluated as if it was fully combined (++), with RS, in the context of what you currently have, to avoid discarding something that could fill a gap later on. This is NOT obvious to all new players.

Shrug, it's a cheap skill to put to r3 and you get what 3 major power and wind each for mastering? Seems pretty worth it.

Crystal Helm (VI) has stats way over its budget for being a 4*
I've also only ever seen one which is mildly irritating

Aerora Strike, Wind Jump, Wind Slash; all great skills that it's relatively easy to damage cap with, depending on your gear and Boostega availability. And they're only 3*, 3* and 2*.
I got a real scare from Classic Kuja in the event. I suppose I should have expected that kind of shenanigans after all the realm dungeon Beatrix fights, but still. Yikes!

For the longest time, the only synergy I had outside of IV and X was 4* gear for weapons.
Here is a list of stuff that got me through dungeons and events.
It looks like they're rejiggering the monthly banners in Japan (timeframe ~6 months out). The new Support Abyss just has normal banner rules for support characters. Full price but repeatable.
The half-price-one-time-only lucky draw banners seem to now be tied to the monthly record fragment dungeons instead, with some random theme of equipment (eg stat down or stat up).

RE: The 4* Masamune, and the other 3/4* stuff I've drawn.
I'm keeping all of it until I run out of room regardless, so I'm not too worried about it, but it sounds like I will also be at least upgrading it, just to have something for VII RS.
RE: More noob questions.
I saw something about characters learning SB's. Does this work for shared SB's? I got the 5* Rune Staff somewhere, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to get all/some of my WHM to memorize it.

If only you could forget unique SBs too.
You can remove them from the bar.
Yeah, but they come right back whenever you click "optimize." No Tyro, I really don't want to use your default SB ever.

Or any basic damage SB. 50% extra damage of a normal attack but with SB charge time? Sign me the fuck up for that!
People actually use the Optimize button? It's terrible.
It usually does a good enough job with gear. Except for Edward and Quina, who it always wants to equip for MAG. It is a lot quicker to fix the one or two things it does wrong than it is to change sorting between ATK/MAG/MND on all three equipment slots.

It's also quicker to fuss with the one or two characters you know it's going to fuck up than it is to always have to fuss with all 5. It's consistent about that.

You don't need to sort each equipment slot unless you want to. Sort by -stat- covers all 3 slots.
I typically go:
Sort By: Mind (1 Character) ->
Sort By: Attack (3 characters) ->
Support gets leftovers
Don't even have to hit sort by when I get to the second DPS slot.
I dislike Optimize because it keeps equipping my 30 and 29 MAG helmets with ~70 defense instead of my 28 MAG helmets with ~85 defense.
I'll take a few more swings at Evrae, and I can probably master the fight with my current setup, but I might just table that fight until I can bring native Wall or a native Hastega. Rosa's Miracle lets me bring single-cast Hastega, but it takes a lot of turns to keep that up on the whole party, which delays my phase transitions, which makes it harder to keep RW Wall and Miracle up the whole fight. I don't have a hones or damage problem, I have a time elapsed problem.
Plus who wants to spend hours S/Ling that fight when there's Darkness skills to unlock and Overwatch to play! Not meeeeee.

Well, yes, if you don't use an offensive mage and completely ignoring one stat, then you only have to sort by two stats instead of three.
But there's also the two more for armor.
For me, weapons are pretty much permanently sorted by Atk and I only need to fuss with them after optimize if Tyro's taking something for himself that Ramza should have (eg an RS axe in XII recently when there was also an RS spear available). Armor is permanently sorted by Def, mostly because Zack and Lightning are hard set to prioritize Res gear and nearly always need to be tweaked unless it's a magic heavy boss. The majority of the time, I only need to tweak two pieces of armor after using Optimize, and then suffer the annoyance of an extra button press for SBs in battle.

If only you could forget unique SBs too.
You can remove them from the bar.
Or any basic damage SB. 50% extra damage of a normal attack but with SB charge time? Sign me the fuck up for that!
STOP EQUIPPING ALL OF MY MAGES WITH A SHARED SB DAGGER!
You don't need to sort each equipment slot unless you want to. Sort by -stat- covers all 3 slots.
I typically go:
Sort By: Mind (1 Character) ->
Sort By: Attack (3 characters) ->
Support gets leftovers
Don't even have to hit sort by when I get to the second DPS slot.

Everyone else uses bracers, especially in realms I lack synergy in, to hit the attack soft cap. Mages all wear hats.
