I'm baffled they kept the 3-4 frame animation look of the 2d series. It's always looked awful to me nod drove me nuts.

I hope Arturo realizes that just because he has the #1 online rank with a "The Real Deal" title doesn't mean he can talk shit about Japanese killers on their home turf, especially since he drowns in pools in every event he's attended back home. Dude needs to check his fuckin ego.

Yeah I've started to really dislike Arturo's attitude since SFV came out. Used to really enjoy watching him, but...well you said it best. Glad he got checked.

Infiltration making another team look like chumps.
To be fair to that team, though, he does make a lot of really really good players look like chumps.

The match with the Zangief was pure sorrow for the Zangief.
The first round against the Ryu looked straight up unfair, though good on the Ryu for managing to take the second round.

Next up TOPANGA vs. TEAM RAZER

    Bud Light?

My guess is that a lot recent attention that the eSports/FGC scene that has arrived lately is a response of corporations to the next Olympic games. With Brazil's government in turmoil, all the official sponsors won't be able to meet the financial expectations they had set and are looking for new markets.

Let's hope its all for good.

Fighting games are based, skill level of straight mashing, on tests of wits and will. Like poker, every move is made with assumptions, bluffs, baits, feints, and sometimes just plain old mind reading.

Because of that, fighting games have distinct threads that run through them. Ideas and expectations, a kind of set reality.

Comedy is often based on the surprise and the absurd, and so it goes for a lot of fighting game humour.

Remember a few years back when the Japanese player Kusoru took MvC3 by storm? There's a history there.

In Japan, is a class of games referred to as kusoge, which translates as "shit game." There are some players who have a kind of love for these fighting games, which are over-the-top broken in such obvious ways that nobody else would take them seriously. They hold kusoge tournaments for games like Fist of the North Star, and, contentiously, the Capcom's Versus series (though it's less common). Kusoru made a name for himself outside these games with his Sol play in Guilty Gear--in fact, Kusoru is a combination of kusoge and Sol, making him literally "shitty Sol." He didn't win tournaments, but he could often steal games from much better players simply because he played like either a troll or an idiot--which you label him with depends entirely on who you're rooting for.

Before crossing the pond for Marvel, those who knew of Kusoru knew him for that Sol. For how he would use the absolute worst moves in the game and the dumbest times, but get away with it because nobody expects their opponent to use trash moves when they shouldn't work anyway.

Maybe you won't understand a lot of that because it's low-res Guilty Gear, but all the dumbness is there.

Here's another Japanese word for you: abare. Basically means acting violent or aggressive. It's a term used primarily in Virtua Fighter, for when players attack from disadvantage. That is, they try and steal a turn by pressing buttons while in negative frames. It's not supposed to work, because if you do that and the opponent attacks (and they should be attacking, because it's their turn), you're going to eat a juicy counter hit and get hurt, bad.

People do that in every fighting game. It's part of the mind games. And sometimes, against all odds and sense, it works.

    And it can be hilarious.

Even at the highest levels of play, people have brain farts, or just get surprised by the dumb. And sometimes the dumb thing is the right move, just because it's so dumb they never see it coming. Things happen that shouldn't, and we laugh.

The Homo-Genius series is a prime example. Short clips cataloguing really stupid, weird, or absurd moments in competitive matches. Non-mix-ups, funky hitboxes, silly damage, etc. Or just really odd kusoge.

Here are a few personal favourites:

And sometimes all you need is some stupid editing to make silly matches absolutely epic.

Above all else, fighting games are about having a good time.

    Kusoru

It's worth pointing out that he isn't just a guy who does random stuff, but a guy with tremendous technical skill and great reactions who can capitalize on all the "random" hits/opportunities he gets from all the insane stuff he does. He's a virtuoso of a whole different kind, a fighting game improvisational jazz soloist.

I think beer companies is a different than YouPorn though. Beer has been at sporting events forever. And advertising for it was well. I'm guessing they are treating esports similarly to regular sporting events.

    eSports going FIFA? : http://www.eslgaming.com/article/announcing-founding-wesa-world-esports-association-2856
After over a year of intense negotiations we are excited to announce the founding of the World Esports Association - WESA. In an effort to further professionalize esports, ESL has been working closely with some of the most renowned, industry-leading esports teams to create an open and inclusive organisation to oversee standardized tournament regulations, player representation as well as revenue sharing for teams.

WESA will offer the chance to bring all esports stakeholders - players, teams, organizers and broadcasters - to the discussion table in order to bring much needed structure, predictable schedules and transparency to the scene. Eight of the world’s biggest multi-gaming brands have contributed to the founding of WESA, with the Association aiming to add more members and negotiations continue with various organizations:+1:

The founding teams are as follows:

    Fnatic
    Natus Vincere
    EnVyUs
    Virtus.pro
    G2 Esports
    FaZe
    Mousesports
    Ninjas in Pyjamas

If they want to truly follow in FIFA's footsteps they need to immediately find ways to get paid under the table for rigging certain aspects of the competition and have morally reprehensible situations going on involving the creation of new venues to play at.

Well, fighting game players have been experts in rigging matches since the 90s. It's just part of the scene, and nobody even hides it. I'm sure they could bring that to the table and really get the "we esports now" ball rolling.

Man, I hate that I never learned how to play with Goro and Benimaru. Also, I still don't like how Kyo looks in this game. He just looks WEIRD. At least when Ryu made the jump to 3D in SF4 (I'm ignoring EX) he still kinda looked like Ryu.

Wanted to write something about frame data, but out of time. Here's some top-level GG from Japan.

A while back I half-assed an article about frame data, mostly the basic math behind its use in fighting games. I'd planned to follow that up with an article about how people work out the frame data from scratch, which is a dying art (if not already dead). I found it interesting, and did my best to contact some people who used to do it. Got basic notes, but wasn't sure anyone else would care. Plus, it might be better with video, and I'm not set up for that (maybe I could run some PS2 emulators, idk).

Hope EVO is on time this year.

F2K|Popi: Yes, that is true, I feel like the process through which to learn a fighting game at a higher level is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of every character and finding out what suits your style, unless you play a character because you think he or she is stylish. I mean like RB|Luffy, the man loves breasts, but can you blame him?
