Well I beat it. Level 94, 42 hours.
Ending stuff
I let the flame die. Pretty happy with my choice.
The cycle was obviously a mess, unnatural, and had been ever since Gwyn first linked the fire. It needed to end. The world was literally coming apart at the seems at the end there. And, unlike in DS1, the world in 3 had fallen to such shambles that I don't think there was really anyone left for that decision to negatively impact. Like, I feel like I had a significant percentage of the remaining un-hollowed world population at fire link.
One day the fire will come back, maybe better than it ever was.
Anywho, gonna watch the "regular" ending on YouTube and then start up my sorcerer and head for the secret ending.
This might be my favorite Souls game. It's neck and neck with 1 at least.
seems like untended graves and dark firelink shrine is in the past
That absolutely obliterates some of the more popular theories in this thread, especially with regards to Ludleth and the Untended Graves, and including mine

It's not as world destroying(HEH) as it seems
If that's a past Firelink, or, a snapshot of Firelink before Ludleth did the deed, it makes sense, since he, you know, broke reality to make the current Firelink.

I don't know that this is actually supported by the text
Also just for reference with fan theories, it's important to remember that to be a Lord of Cinder you literally have to have linked the flame. And you also have to be dead. Kind of by definition.

The special Ludleth dialog
The eyes shew a world destitute of fire, a barren plane of endless darkness.
A place born of betrayal.
So I will'd myself Lord, to link the fire, to paint a new vision.
What is thine intent?
THat dialog heavily suggests he did something.
Combined with the Kiln's completely fucked up scenery it's hard for me to gather another conclusion.
To note, the Kiln of the First Flame in Dark Souls 1, while certainly shunted off into "somewhere else", was just a barren wasteland after a huge explosion.
Not really next to a fucked up but weirdly intact building ball.
From in the past has used that imagery to depict something that's not necessarily real, or altered in someway(The Old Hunter's DLC for Bloodborne).
Not that this is Bloodborne or anything, I just think it's supposed to signify something WRONG in the space that the Kiln of the First Flame resides.

We have very different readings of that line
It just sounds to me like he linked the fire to change the future, not that he literally created a reality from whole cloth
"to paint a new vision" just means he's going against the vision presented by the eyes, merely that he is acting in contradiction, not that he's exhibiting a power not seen anywhere else in the canon
The conversation with the Handmaiden seems pretty conclusive: this is the same Firelink as the Untended Graves, only the Untended Graves is in the past
I ran past there and found some stuff, but where do I actually go?
Well
Coming from the Pontiff's room, If you cross to the other side of that square with the giants, you'll find a room with stairs. The way forward is from there.
If you played DS1, be prepared for a horrifying throwback.
The DLC for Dark Souls 3 is gonna be real interesting
I hope it explains what the deal with DS2 is, and why it's not much of a thing in the story of DS3.
the deal with DS2 is that it isn't especially relevant to the story that DS3 is telling
there doesn't have to be anything more to it than that
that said, the whole premise of DS3 is predicated by premises that were established by DS2: the cycle of ages of fire and dark originates with DS2, and the SotFS alternate ending introduces the idea that the lords could have instead chosen to refuse their thrones
Ds3 seems to present a different type of cycle, where the first flame never went out
The First Flame has never gone out; there's never been a version where it did, I think. It can gutter for a long time before winking out
DS1, DS2
Even if you choose not to link the fire, it doesn't matter; someone else will eventually come along, by hook or by crook, and they will link it instead
DS3 is in a different place because the First Flame seems to be in a much worse state than before, and every time it's linked it seems to be weaker, more ragged, and harder to light

I dunno, I just don't like how DS2 is all "these are strange things from a time long ago, no one even knows what the land was was called or who lived there and yadda yadda." and then dudes in DS3 are like "yo is that Big Hat Logan's tomb? That dude was crazy into crystal magic back in the day. When he lived on 24th street in Anor Londo"

Ah, yep.
Hey jerks.
Is that where I am supposed to go? I have two other options, I think.
The lava lake, and the dungeon.
I'm guessing the lava lake has sweet pyro loot.
Also, I boosted VIG to 24 and bought the Eastern set, less the chest piece. It's too heavy to wear with 10 VIT.
You can see your character's face through the slits in the helmet now!

So beautiful
....Man if Ciaran's set was in this game with her twinblades you could have a time doing some cosplay
None of them are as perfect as Ornstein and Smough, alas
But three Black Knights with different weapons could work, or Lothric Knights, or some "oh shit" boss cosplays... hm, hm
Oh, or the three box art knights

Aldia was barking up the wrong tree when he tried to make people into dragons for immortality. Should have been researching cats instead.
Everything will crumble and waste away, so that something new may be born.
Isn't it wonderful?
