Marvel has responded to the Internet uproar over Tilda Swinton's casting as "The Ancient One" in Doctor Strange — which some have decried as an act of "whitewashing."

A statement from a Marvel Studios spokesperson, given to Mashable, defends the hiring, citing both the fictional character's background and the progressiveness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

"Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU to life. The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast."

For some reason I had assumed Doom left the Zombies/Badlands so that there was always a credible threat around to keep people in check, and a place to send powered troublemakers to die when they defied his law.

I dunno why I thought that though, hmm.

I can see that perspective, but why? He is already an all powerful god, he can just instantly destroy any threats.

It would be like creating a wall holding back a pool of insecticide to discourage ants from showing up. Rather than just destroying the ant hill.

Doom wasn't as all powerful, nor as perfect, as his hype suggested, and his ego denied him the ability to either admit it or to rectify it.
It's also implied that he built at least one shard of Battleworld with an inherent flaw with the intention of exacting revenge on the heroes who thwarted him by having them kill each other over and over again. So it's not like he was a magnanimous god to begin with.

Yeah I read 1872, it was neat. I should have bought it, I guess. What were the 1602 ones? Are there trades if Angela?

What's the first trade of Jason Aaron's Thor?
Thor: God of Thunder, The God Butcher.

The 1602 SW series was just Angela: Witch Hunter

I would Also highly recommend 1602 itself if you haven't read it

DouglasDanger if you don't mind digital you can snag all of this on Unlimited right now as well.

    How does unlimited work?

It's basically Marvel Netflix, you get all single issue releases six months behind, and they're constantly backfilling their classics catalogue. 10 bucks a month or so, it is a wonderful thing for me. They're just wrapping up the Secret Wars stuff now.

They're also putting their new Star Wars stuff up.

$10 a month, or $70 a year. If you aren't cash strapped, and enjoy comics the annual subscription is a great deal. I have had it for a couple years now, and am still working through old comics I have never read, while getting to read "new stuff".

    Definitely recommend a tablet though.

I liked the secret wars inhumans mini quite a bit

in general they're better the 'closer' they are to the main story; the payoff in siege was pretty great, for example

If you're going to be dabbling in phenomenal cosmic powers it is generally considered polite to do so far away from major urban areas.

The second one comes out tomorrow

The first was super boring and was 75% Tony Starks college adventures with a generic new love interest from that time that Tony never mentioned before

    It seems supremely skippable

OK, I might get the third issue next month because it's a CW2 set up. But the rest of the title doesn't cross over into the event at all which makes sense I guess with Invincible IM taking that lead.

    Yeah Unlimited is hilarious value

I've been subscribed for two, three months, and I've definitely read hundreds of dollars worth of comics if I were buying them in trades

unlimited has some problems, especially if you read on anything other than a tablet, but it's cheap enough that those are easily overlooked
