I've been considering a pro purchase, but first i need a 4k TV. For my Tax return puchase i instead went with a mountain of creepy plastic. (Kingdom Death Monster 1.5 Kickstarter). TV comes later, then probably pro unless the ps5 comes out first.

KDM and a PS4 Pro, after trading in the original, are equally good sources of anime titties.
Haven't gotten too far in the game, got lvl 39 before I turned it off. So far I haven't actually died to a boss. I guess it helps that I beat the succubus and the first boss in the demos. I've never fought Nue before but managed to one-shot him. It really helps to clean out an area before a boss as most of the time you tend to find a charm or something that innately counters the next obstacle. So finding that lightning resist charm made life easier.
I'm sorry to hear so many people had a problem with Tachibana or what his name is... I also managed to one-shot him with nothing but my katana. I can't really remember what I did but you do kinda have to be aggressive. Wear down his stamina by blocking hits and remembering to release the block button between hits to allow your stamina to recover faster. He did get me in a combo a couple times and things got dicey but I manged to recover and put him down.
I thought he was pretty easy too cause all i really did was keep the pillar inbetween me and him until he did his massive stamina draining attack, walked around, and got in a big killer blow. rinse repeat.

A thing of note I've been reading: blocking matters. It's not just dodge roll city like a Souls game. Especially if you get caught in a combo. You can't roll out like you would in a Souls game. But you CAN block out of it. You aren't just trapped there. Gotta re-train those reflexes.
I figured this out last night in the fishing village. I was getting absolutely wrecked by fast attacking revenants because I was trying to dodge roll out of the way. I'm still not fully grasping the systems but things got a lot better once I realized blocking was effective.
I'm loving the game so far. I only got to play about 2 hours last night and didn't make it through the fishing village. It's a tough game but I'm not getting that same sense of hopelessness that made me put Darksouls down. I'm dying a lot to the big demons but I'm wanting to press on and figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I was feeling a bit of buyers remorse after reading some of the comments in here but after the first few hours I think I will get through this and enjoy it.

Katana seems to be the most forgiving with blocks and is the only one weapon that has a traditional parry (which is silly).

ehh.. I'm not saying blocking skills don't matter...but I've at least gotten past the third main level and several sub missions and the only blocking ive ever done on purpose was when i had to run down a hallway that an archer was shooting down. I'm sure if i got good at it, blocking would be super effective, im not saying its going to be a vital skill.
Now if i ever choose to play this game as a bare fisted brawler, Then i will be learning how to block/parry.

I've seen a lot of people talk about be stuck in combos of enemies being a mark against the game even if they enjoy it. So it seems many people don't know that you aren't actually trapped in the combo. So it's quite important from that perspective. If you don't care about getting stuck in combos at all then yea, of course it doesn't matter.
Learning to block to interrupt combos is 100% a required skill. You're just giving away free chunks of your health bar if you don't do it, especially against aggressive human opponents.
Is there a specific stat I should be focusing on early game? Or is it more just focus on the stats of the weapons you want to use?
Also, I know it's been mentioned but what does the weapon proficiency do? Does it unlock something somewhere for the weapon? I'm two of three bars full for axes but I haven't noticed anything to unlock.

The stats improve with familiarity. Also, its worth more souls if you sell it with full familiarity.

Familiarity will increase stats on the weapon and if it is full, the inheritable ability (if the weapon has one) can be transferred to another weapon.
I mean you can get the AI stuck too, though they seem to figure this out faster than most players. And it's also about being in the right stance; some stances you might as well not be blocking.

Oooh! Now we hittin' my demographic!
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
After beating against the wall that is the first boss for a bit, I summoned some help. Went much smoother after that. I think I was starting to get him, managed to get him kind of close a couple of times but I just wanted to move forward so I got some help.
I'm glad I picked this up on a whim! I wasn't really into that first alpha demo at all but I'm having a blast with the full game.
Summoning is OK so long as you didn't stand in a corner shooting the boss with your longbow (seriously I've seen this more than I haven't with people summoning). You can always go back and fight him just to say you beat him solo. This isn't a one and done game (in fact the in game beastiary demands that you beat enemies - including bosses - multiple times).
I'm also surprised at how many people summon. . .at the BEGINNING of a stage. On the water stage I said "fuck this. . ." and just drug the summoner straight to the boss.
Well, there's actually an achievement for doing that.
The weapon damage scaling off stats is definitely a little weird. For katanas, pumping Heart was good at first and then tapered off, and now every couple of points it will shoot up by +4
But improving skill or strength, the secondary scaling stats, often raises it by +2 or +3 every point. They also give you more skill points (and are required for armour)
It does seem like it's way harder to fuck up your build in this game, as all the stats are pretty important and have uses, and if you pump a stat you can always get a lot of use out of associated weapons since you don't need to use resources enchanting them
I've got Heart at about 20 now and it seems like the returns have very much diminished?
well the stats seem to soft cap kind of low (15 or so), so the game is encouraging you to at least get every thing to at least 10, then specializing.

I am mid to high teens in my important stats of Heart/Str/Stam/Spirit
I guess magic up to 15 then get those others up to 20 for armor and ki. I get vastly more dmg boost putting a single point in skill from 5-->6 than my main damage stats though which is funny.
I don't even really want ninpo because I already have my shortcuts clogged with items.
Protip from me: items can be shortcutted multiple times and I kept wanting to use an elixir but being on the other shortcut page. So I made both UP into elixir. It is worth it.

I have a gripe about the game.
The loot dropping ruining finding unique stuff in the environment. Loot is fine, but one part of Dark Souls that is completely gone was exploring and finding cool hidden stuff. Now since gear is all random, I'll never find a sword placed somewhere special or a spell in a lore spot. I know that rooftop I can drop onto probably just has sacred waters and bullets.
It's disappointing.

Yea for stats just test what you get for each stat at level up. Whatever gets you the most for your build for that particular level put it there. Rinse and repeat. Just test all options first.

Are you talking about the bar that has the little sections for each weapon? Because that is not proficiency it is familiarity. That does what the people above said.
If you are actually talking about proficiency it gives you more skill points as you progress it and every weapon TYPE has a separate value as opposed to individual weapons unlike familiarity.
My build at the moment is body 20 and skill almost 20. 12/13ish dex and spirit. A couple token points in everything else to hit various requirements.
That little bit of spirit for guardian purposes actually makes mage armor pretty substantial defensively. Any time I pick up a piece with spirit scaling, it's comparable in raw defense to heavy armor at a fraction of the weight.
Mind you, the extra rolls on it aren't as suitable for a tank build.

I'm happy to see invisible hidey holes and the need to memorize them gone.
I agree that the game basically totally removes the joy from finding cool weapons because it's just an endless treadmill of gear.
I'm not even bothering with blacksmithing aside from appearance changes since you don't need to fiddle with your equipment to get the marginal bonuses you want. Just equip the strongest stuff in the weight class you want and charge into battle, you'll be fine

I disagree. It's all about those set items. I reforge them if I don't have purple gear or if the level is too low and I don't want to spend the money. I also reforged my water Katana and got a purple affix giving it +damage based on Dexterity, which is great, because I'm really heavy into ninjutsu.
I've been going through most of the game with Amrita, Treasure, Kodama, Enemy sense. Makes completing levels and finding all the hidden stuff much easier.
And there *are* important missables in stages you don't want to miss (for main missions at least, not as true for sub missions), usually in the form of skill point-giving locks of hair.

The downside for the Dark Souls method, for me, is that I'd get my weapon and armor set then never change it. So finding gear meant literally nothing to me. I already had the gear for my build. My build was built around that specific gear. No drops mattered at all.
In this I'm actually excited to get drops because any of it could actually be useful. So I've got the opposite feeling. Gear drops in this are exciting. Gear drops in Souls games were meaningless.

Gear is not 100% random. There are specific named gear drops, in specific places...they just don't "pop" as much because it's easy to lose them in the fountain of other loot.

Nioh is doing this in a sense, having a limited number of high quality weapon classes, then having loot apply to those classes.
