Barring something incredible coming out of nowhere I would be shocked if it wasn't Doom. Even now this week's podcast, two months after it was released, they couldn't refrain from gushing over how good it is when it was brought up for just a moment.

I think The Witness is also a strong contender. Definitely top 3.
I'd imagine Superhot will be somewhere on Giant Bomb's list.

Are you sure? I don't recall the bomb crew enjoying The Witness that much, despite talking about it a fair bit. From what I remember Brad played through to the final achievement, Dan liked it enough to play through the main story and the others seemed lukewarm. Then again I might be projecting my own disappointment with the game.

Jeff was pretty into the Witness IIRC.
Yeah, IIRC didn't everyone end up having their wives and girlfriends helping them solve puzzles? That "experience" might actually help The Witness' chances.
I think Doom is a contender for sure, but how much will the "bad" MP weigh it down? Whereas Overwatch is ALL MP and it's good and still getting updated and supported, but lacks real singleplayer content of any sort.
Jeff and Brad liked Doom, and those are the two "We are not leaving this room till I get my way" guys on the staff. Normally on opposing sides, when they share a sentiment they cannot be stopped.
So yeah, Doom is probably winning.
edit: And it'll probably get Best Surprise and be a contender for a STYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYLE award
I think Brad needs to be a bit more objective in his reviews. While they addressed the fact that they tend to cover and review games they're interested in (thus resulting in higher scores) on last week's podcast I still think Brad is being a bit liberal w/ his scores. Inside is a fantastic game but I certainly wouldn't call it perfect (granted 5 stars doesn't necessarily mean perfect). On this week's podcast Brad seemed to agree with Jeff's demerits for the game.
I feel like Brad gets really excited about new things - especially when others don't have access to them.
If Doom ends up being their #1, that would be pretty cool, because it would be the second time that I've agreed with their game of the year pick. The previous one being XCOM.
People can (and Brad often is) head over heels in love with a game despite its flaws. He can see where Inside isn't perfect, but he adores it anyway and that's okay. Five stars makes sense to me.
Yeah, as you said, 5 stars is not a perfect score because there are no perfect games. It just means Brad really liked it, which he did, and that any flaws he saw were outweighed by what he liked about it, which is also true.
Brad is generally a high scorer. It's hard to call it an issue when GB is one of those sites that tries to emphasize the idea of paying attention to a reviewer and knowing what they like and don't like rather than just looking at the score.
It might if there's something else that is a really close 2nd, which again, in Brad and Jeff's eyes, there will not be. They are perfectly fine glossing over the parts they don't like if they don't like them.

Objectivity in reviews basically breaks down to "this is a puzzle platformer game with heavy emphasis on horror atmosphere". Past that, every single other word is subjective; it's opinion. Calling for an opinion piece (which every single review will always be forever and ever because that's what criticism fucking is) to be objective literally makes no sense.
If only Austin were there to put forward the case for TMS in Best Style
Who knows, he might. Don't know if it's still in the works, but there was talk during some of the Goodbye Stream about if he wants to do a Walker Defense of a game that came out while he was on staff, they'd try to make it happen.

Doom seems like a shoe in cause despite Mario Makers clear "if im not super into social media/sharing levels/have an audience, this game may be a completely different experience for me than internet damous dudes issue", they still gave it
doom multiplayer will be like "yeah its medicore, whatever' for 15 seconds then back to debate
At this point all I want out of a review is a bug report. Tell me if it's broken. I know what my tastes are. I don't care what some journalist liked or disliked. If it's a game that I haven't already decided I'm going to invest in, usually 30 mins to an hour of research on YouTube tells me everything I need to know.

Thus why GB does QLs for waaaaaay more games then they do reviews for.
Jesus the audio in this podcast is trash. I hope this is fixed soon.

Overwatch hooked them all for varying lengths of time, even Jeff, which surprised everyone including him
It'll be on the list, maybe top five, but it won't be in contention for number one
Not unless there's a brief resurgence of them all playing it that hits sometime in November
Right now I'm guessing Doom, maybe Stardew Valley in the top three, maybe Inside if Brad won't shut up about it, and potentially something else from the second half of the year
I mean shit No Man's Sky isn't out yet. Titanfall 2 isn't out yet! There's still too many games left to go this year

The surprise combined with the fact that it's so good
Battlefield 1 though? I feel like I haven't heard them talk much about that in any real positive light
Jeff fell down a deep, deep hole.
And he dragged us with him!
Dear god, he's right!

I'm going to be sorely disappointed if I don't see someone wearing one of these shirts on a UPF soon.

The entire PS3 version of Skyrim didn't stop it.
