My guess, he dropped out because he thought that a Trump-Cruz-Kasich brokered convention would go to Kasich. Then Kasich dropped out and now things might look good for Cruz in a Trump-Cruz brokered convention. But I doubt he's that dumb.
Bragging rights that he opposed whatever Trump can/will do *if* elected to the White House? Honestly, my guess is that he's trying to reclaim whatever political capital he can while he can because he's burned every last bridge in his party with this mad scramble to the presidency. Holding on to his junior US senator seat in Texas is probably the best he can hope for since he's actually not a US citizen, but an illegal alien from the Planet Moltar in the Ziptron Galaxy.

It's incredibly foolish to do this then let Trump take two states unopposed. If there was any truth to it then he should have jumped back in last week or something.
