(another) What's this bug

EclecticGrooveEclecticGroove Registered User regular
I have been seeing these pop up all over my apartment the last few weeks.

What are they? And what are they coming in from/for? Which would tie into how do I get rid of them.
Size wise, this is about the size of a pencil tip.

It looks kind of like a stink bug. I know they make traps for them, though I've never used one.

A little bit. Kind of more like a Harlequin Bug.

Though it's hard to tell from this potato.

Stinkbugs usually have a more "shield" like shape, I think. @arch would be good for this too.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

Yeah, sorry for that. It's really small, so was either a close shot that couldn't focus that well, or a further away shot that didn't have much clarity either.

I've seen a few stink bugs around over the years, but always adults, and always solo. These small guys I've been finding at least 1-2 of a week, and sometimes 2-3 in a given day.

That's a beetle of some kind. Note the deflexed (downward facing) head under the pronotal (second body segment) shield. Also note the shell-like elytra (hardened forewings) covering the abdomen.

From the size and color pattern I think its a dermestid (carpet) beetle. Maybe spread some diatomaceous earth around the apt for a few days, and give the whole place a daily vacuum for about a week after that.

They eat fibers like carpet, clothes, and hair.

They deffo have a very "shield" like look to them though.

Some other bugs look like that too.

    Awesome, thanks.

That would make sense. I started seeing them shortly after I had a leak in the exterior wall. Probably got in here then somehow.

Yeah. The big thing that lets you easily tell a beetle from a true bug like a stink bug is basic shapes, incidentally. If it looks like a triangle, it's a true bug. If it looks like a circle or oval, it's a beetle.

This works in like 99.99% of cases and the ones it doesn't work on you'll probably look at and go "I have no idea what this is", something like....I guess a Gelastocoridae (toad bug)

but they are cute, so they stand out anyway!

I always think carpet beetles are really cute.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

If I wasn't afraid of the infractions, I'm so curious what Tube's brain would do if the Bug report forum just started becoming pictures asking " What's this bug"
