Nope. Actually, last thing I heard about Impulse...
...he was actually a mass-murdering terrorist from the future and 'Bart Allen' was just a name he was given as part of some witness protection/probation program that dumped him into the present day.

    Yeah.

Keep in mind this happened in like the first couple of years of the reboot when the Teen Titans were stuck dealing with that Harvest mess.

EDIT: If you're unfamiliar with what Harvest is, this four-part review from Atop The Fourth Wall more or less explains why I refer to Harvest as a mess as it covers The Culling, a crossover between Teen Titans and Legion Lost during I think the first year of the reboot.

Gotta give DC credit for taking the "batshit crazy" option.

I have a podcast about Digimon called the Digital Moncast, on Audio Entropy.

    Shit, y'all
I'm kind of excited for this

    Yeah like

    It could easily go wrong

    But
Johns just straight up saying "Yeah we've been taking cues from Watchmen for Like 20 years and they were the wrong lessons. DC, and superheroes in general, should be about hope and heroism and love" is exactly what I want to hear.

Hmmm, out of the writers and artists not connected to Rebirth already that I expected a response from, this particular one wasn't on the list.

The last thing I expected from a new DC relaunch was for me to actually kinda want to check it out.

I have a podcast about Digimon called the Digital Moncast, on Audio Entropy.

    I'm so conflicted on this.

When New 52 came out, I was a huge supporter of it. Setting aside the established canon was tremendously gutsy. I felt so much admiration towards DC for actually doing it. I bought probably a third to a half of the New 52 titles. Yes, I eventually dropped them one by one until I was reading zero DC titles (some were legit bad, some were just Not My Thing, and some simply ended), and some of their "none of the stuff from Old DCU happened, except I guess for the things that did" song and dance was poorly thought out, but I felt like setting aside the old continuity (almost) completely and giving the world a fresh start was amazing. And now it turns out that the old continuity never went anywhere. New 52 wasn't a fresh start, it was just Heroes Reborn. I find that genuinely disappointing.

So, Rebirth sounds like it will be an actually interesting story, and I'm always a huge fan of comic stories being a metaphor and commentary for pop-culture events (Ask Me About My Love of Planetary), but at the same time I'm kinda bummed that New 52 was an empty promise.

(Although I haven't read DC in years, so maybe the current stuff in there is not so great, and could us a make-over.)

it strikes me that the New 52's relationship to DC Rebirth is kind of similar to Crisis on Infinite Earths' relationship to Zero Hour: Crisis in Time

for instance, both Zero Hour and Rebirth brought back the JSA

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
It is absolutely the latter thing.

Like the New 52 has had some bright spots but by and large it has been the excess of DC to an nth degree and I am very excited to see such a prominent figure decry it's direction.

I love Marvel, like that is pretty obvious, but I hold a deep and abiding love for DC and it's heroes and hearing that they are aware of the horrible lessons they have learned over the past decade or two and want to get back to what made me fall in love with the universe as a teenager makes me really, really happy.

I know Didio and Harras are still in charge so I am skeptical

But I love these characters and what they stand for and am more than aware of how sharply their sales have dipped since the New 52 so I am hoping even their thick ass heads may have noticed

I am incredibly trepidatious about this whole thing

They're saying all the right things right now, but this is one guy that isn't even working on the comics department after this
Though the only way this idea could be better is if The Killing Joke was also fucking everything up somehow

It's not just Watchmen, it's Watchmen and The Killing Joke

On the whole, I am obviously 100% in favor of good stories being told, and cool things being done with characters. Revitalizing an entire line of modern myths that have been cultural touch points for nearly a hundred years is, I will allow, a higher priority than keeping some nebulous promise one single dude thought had been made to him by a corporate entity.

So if the folks at DC do good and write a cool story and breathe new life into a stagnating pond, awesome! I'd love to get back to reading DC comics (part of my drifting away from it was not liking the stories too much, part of it was DC doing thoughtless and dumb things, and part of it was just me seizing the opportunity to trim down my pull list and spend a bit less money).

My biggest hope is that DC Comics does the right thing and returns Dan Cassidy to what he was, a special effects wizard who created the Blue Devil suit for a movie and got zapped into it by Nebiros. I can't stand the wearing Nebiros' skin angle.

My only potential concern, and ultimately it depends on the context of the DC universe at the end of the story,
is that the DC universe ends up being a microverse of the real universe which in Watchmen I think is ours? It makes the conflicts seemingly small that all these larger-than-life gods of the DCU are defending a paltry little microverse.

Of course Manhattan could have created a parallel universe when he did that instead.

Maybe it sounds stupid, just how it comes across to me.

Does anyone know if the Young Animals line is tied into the new continuity?
Those are the titles most appealing to me in the Rebirth lineup, except for maybe Rucka's Wonder Woman or if they do a JSA or Wally West as the Flash book.

it's a good sign to me that they're both bringing back an old beloved character while not erasing the newer non-white version of the character.

Well unless they pull the Teen Titans through some of the same pre-FP crap that went on like with the Calculator's kids, I think N52-Wally's gonna be safe.

They aren't getting previewed, it isn't a preview collection

It just has various scenes that set up titles

So Geoff Johns is saying he wants the comics to go back to that core of hope and heroics, which is great

But does he have any actual power to enforce that?

He's not in charge, right? He's just another writer in the stable of dozens of writers?

He's kind of got the same job as Joe Quesada at Marvel, from what I understand

though I have no idea what kind of actual influence Quesada has these days
