Just finished binge watching Forged in Fire. It's a good, solid competition show with good judges, sound critiques, and very little unnecessary drama.

you know what would actually stand out in the world of procedurals would be a gifted detective who is not a white man

Does iZombie count? The actual cop is a black dude, the gifted mortician is a really white lady, the other mortician's actor is a brit with an indian/thai/kenian background.

    Banshee is really good!

Now that we're entering September, what good new shows are starting up? Or is there somewhere that just lists them all with a description?

An ex racecar driver turned cop teams up with a young kid who knows how to follow a lead. Together they join forces to take down a brass knuckles wearing crime syndicate who's crimes include stealing precious gems, rings, and illegal underground robot fight rings.

Will officer S. H. Hog and kid Prower be able to stop the Knuckles?

    No I don't.

There was a brief moment of fear, before I clicked on this, where I had the thought "what if he's the opposite of every other actor on TV, and ISN'T actually British"

The Duffer Bros. talked about Stranger Things Season 2 a bit, saying that they considered the first season a very long movie and feel the same about the second, but that the sequels they aspire to echo are ones that pivot from the original and do something different, citing Aliens and Terminator 2 as examples.

That does not give me a lot of confidence based on my personal feelings regarding those sequels, but I guess is theoretically a good pivot

I think they are citing them as examples of successful pivots rather than what they are going for themselves but we will see, I suppose

Maybe. Regardless, they're both sequel pivots in which I still like the first one better (even if I do like the sequel), which also contributes to my apprehension.

3 new characters were announced for Season 2: Max, a new girl around the boy's age that is a tomboy and rides a skateboard, her macho brother Billy and a gender-neutral role (unclear whether the character is or there is just no defined gender requirement for the casting) named Roman.

This sounds aggressively 90's, which is not too far removed from 80's

    I approve

Tomboy is definitely an early 90s trope but it fits totally fine with their tone

also just the name Max was all over 90's kids media

    as was skateboarding

Yeah but a real skateboarding tomboy named Max should be from the eighties then

The nineties had to be based on something, you know?

honestly the 90's were basically just a dirtier, sadder version of the 80's until like 1998 or so

Hey, has anyone checked out the Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell miniseries? It looks interesting.

Yeah it was a good adaptation

Totally agree. I'm reading the book right now because I loved the mini-series so much and I'm shocked how close they are. There's a lot more character stuff in the book but they translated it really well to the series.

I totally want a Mr. Segundus & Mr. Honeyfoot spin off though.

The skateboarding thing reminds me of a conversation I had recently.

Does Bart Simpson still skateboard in new episodes of the Simpsons (outside of the intro)?

I've just seen random new episodes here and there, and neither me nor the person I was talking to could recall Bart on a skateboard in like the last ten years or so.

Granted, I also haven't seen more than half of the episodes from the last ten years, so I could easily be missing plenty of skateboarding.

He's such a perfect Jesus for American Gods

Like obviously normally I want a middle eastern Jesus, but given that he is likely the Jesus of America, and not like, Jesus Jesus, it makes perfect sense that he's this scruffy ass white guy

Yeah American Gods is maybe the one piece of media where I will defend White Jesus as a necessary choice.
