Thanks for the advice. I assume the standard tank/healer/X/X/X party dynamic applies. Given my cast, I assumed Cecil and Krile would be healers. Exdeath for damage and two others for damage. Should I use any of the story characters?
Lassie is a strong unit and can equip the White Dragon's katana, although so can Cyan. If you're running any kind of physical, Fina is fantastic for her Cheer ability (+party Atk/Def). You'll want to level Rain eventually probably because when his 6* unlocks, he gets Full Break, which is crazy awesome. Story characters only need half experience to level too, so they power up a lot faster than others.

*shrug* Either is probably fine. I'd say the latter's better, although you don't get Fina until the second continent, so that's a chunk of content to get through with whoever else. Rain won't get his 6* for at least a few months, if not more. Go with who you like in the end though. It's easy enough to level characters and random events will dump mountains of free experience on you. The materials you need to rank up characters are far more rare.
Fina makes a good contender for your primary healer spot, which means Krile, being classed as a Red Mage, can become one of your black magic casters. Rain and Laswell can cap at 5*, but their stats are fairly mediocre for it, whereas Fina's stats are fine and she gets great skills (Cheer at level 76 is a godsend). If you're looking for physical damage dealers, consider Kain or Cyan.

Krile's versatility is really nice. Doublecast means she can help take a lot of heat of Fina while still dishing out damage. She replaced Anzelm as my red mage and honestly may never leave my party.

And when she gets her 5* upgrade, she gets Curaja (AoE), +30% Mag (as long as you have a staff equipped), and a skill that completely fills her MP (but sets her HP to 1).

The story characters are pretty good. Lasswell has high damage and Rain does good until his 6 star form which gets the extremely broken Full Break skill.
I'd go Rain, Lasswell, Cecil, Krile, and Exdeath. That's what I'd be doing (well, Exdeath or CoD) except it's a Gumi game and welp, RNG.
Edit: My kingdom for a few dozen Litrocks and Heaven's Ash. EVERYTHING needs them to evolve and they appear to be a somewhat rare drop.
I've been picking up Litrocks here and there from steals. I really wish stealing wasn't a thing, I hate feeling like I have to grind steals from every enemy.

Heaven's Ash are relatively common steals and drops in the second continent's forest. The boss there also drops (and is a stealee for) Sacred Crystals, which are extra rare.
Litrocks are drops/steals from all the robot/mechanical enemies in Fulan pass or whatever on the first continent.
Which will take Cecil, Rain, and Lasswell to Rank 5. That's not taking into account Fina/Maria/Kirle and whatever DPS character I toss in -- Sabin, currently, but Shantotto / Kuja are appealing.
Can you dualcast that lifetap or whatever spell and then follow up with Curaja after?
No. It's an ability, not a spell. You'll have to bring a second mode of healing to keep her safe, either in items or another white mage, but Fina or Cecil can do that just fine.
So I finished the available story this afternoon, minus the 2 "secret" esper dungeons.
The last dungeon is roughly on par with the Advanced XP dungeon.
Blind and Poison are liquid monkey shit. Bring consumables.
Maria's HP left something to be desired. She died a LOT in those last few dungeons at 40/40 max 3 star.
Non-summons level up twice as fast as summons, apparently. I ranked Rain to 4 after Cecil was around level 25ish... and now Cecil is 36 and Rain is 49. Both 4 star.
I still can't dent the White Dragon's HP. Poison and Paralyze are probably musts.
Oh, you just managed to tick the health down to 50%? Let me self-destruct for more HP than any of your characters have. Two enemies per stage, 3 stages in a row, I didn't even make it to the 4th stage, and I have no good source of ice magic (Laswell's magic sucks).

If all of your team focuses on one enemy, you still can't kill them?
I was auto-battling, and Krile and Exdeath do scratch for damage.
Cecil was equipped with a Flametongue, which they were resisting. :P
If you click on an enemy, your team will focus fire that enemy and you'll avoid moving on to a new target even if you have spare leftover damage period at the end of the round comma if your team has killed the target how it'll automatically Target another enemy for Focus fire.

Yup, well aware of both of those things. Auto-battling through that 2x Balloon stage was just not the way to go. I need to actually select magic and kill them that way. Honestly, once I removed Cecil's Flametongue for a Buster Sword, he was fine. It's just really stupid that the self-destruct happens at 50% when they have 5000 HP to burn through, so you're guaranteed to lose a character if you didn't burn them down past 30% or so.
Does anyone else get random ctd when moving through menus and stuff? Pain the butt. Also maxed out my material slots and need to figure out what to sell off
If you're not crafting a lot of abilities or items, you can sell off stuff like ores, wood and elemental crysts (save 5 Earth Megacrysts and 8 Water Crysts for quests, which you may have already completed). A lot of the other misc ingredient things don't seem like they're good for much beyond inventory bloat, but there's a large number of quests that need the random amount of one thing or another.
Elemental crysts (non-mega) can all be safely sold off, since you can also set up your friend request to receive those instead of gil or Friend Points for a couple of days to build stock if you really needed to craft something.

You can go to the shop and expand you materials (or items, or weapons, etc) inventory by 5 per 100 lapis.

I finally met a friend leader who had higher ATK
He was also a Cyan, max level, with a level 27 2* Ifrit. Only ~254 Attack though, I figured it'd be higher.

And I highly recommend this. It'll keep piling more and more materials of different kinds on you, and if you accumulate more than 99 of anything, split it into a new pile.
I especially recommend using lapis to expand your friend list too. The more friend summons you can do, the more and sooner the TMs you get from those units AND the more benefit you get from the random "chance to get cactuars/gil snappers from friend summon" events.

But I have Terra and Fina healing so for the foreseeable future those two are on the A team.
Fina's HP is...something to be desired though. At least she can dodge 2 attacks whenever I want, and her MP pool is gigantic.

I did it without status effect using Full Break.
But Full Break is full broken, so that's not saying a lot.
Poison yes. You can sub paralyze with sleep and wreck his day.

Thanks for the reminder. I was going to go try Ifrit again, but would have forgotten that Edgar was using flametongue. That would have been rough.
