The only legendary skins I really want now are Stonhardt for Reinhardt, one of Zarya's goth skins, and literally any one for Gengi because I don't like his stock design at all.
I just really hope I don't get racist Pharah, because yeah, or young Hanzo because boy do those make him look like a doofus.
edit: oh also any Reaper legendary because I like how they make the shotguns look.
I don't really care about the skins as I have 3 of the legendaries
I am tempted to get a loot box but then I know how random they are so that is what prevents me from it as I put up with enough disappointment in pugging

Yeah, ironically it's the fact that the boxes are completely random and have no currency in them that is keeping me from considering a purchase.

I have seen a few players with the racist Pharah skins over the last few days I do hope they not using it for ironic reasons

Racist...Pharah?

I think the pharah skins look awesome, I'm not really going to argue that they aren't appropriating Native American iconography and styles but I dunno, seems a bit much to say it's racist

I don't see how that is racist.

The pharah skin looks really cool it is just a weird/bad fit for pharah"s character because she has nothing to do with that culture/iconography at all
And they gave zenyatta a ra skin for some reason? Makes no sense
I suppose so, would it have been as racist if the characters weren't so clearly aligned with certain nationalities? Like it makes no sense that Zen has an Egyptian God skin. But I guess since that culture no longer exists it's not really racist to appropriate it onto characters that don't fit the ethnicity? Like it would actually be kind of racist to have Pharah have Egyptian God skins really, just because she's Egyptian, she's likely culturally Muslim or Christian in the canon if the Egypt of the games alt future is anything like the Egypt of today
I guess I never really thought about it, I just was like "that's awesome, she's a bird and has like bird iconography", I barely made the Native American connection, which I guess shows how their culture has been commercialised and turned into a kind of "style" to such an extent that I didn't even raise an eyebrow when I saw it
Interesting

I don't disagree that Pharah's costume is appropriation, but why is that the only costume being called out for it?
Quite a few others are also appropriated from cultural backgrounds not native to the character's backstory.
Last night I was reading about the "Pharah is a quad amputee with robot limbs" theory. The visual evidence is interesting at least, but I think it's most likely just a stylistic quirk.

I don't know that I want to go down this road or that it is really any of my business but I don't think it is the same thing as a real person adopting another culture. To me we are in the realm of total fiction and changing the skin is literally changing the character. Now a Native American can play that character and identify with the look. Maybe that is just because I don't really get to interested in the backstory and some of you are invested in these avatars as actual breathing characters, but I feel like calling it racist is really, really overly aggressive. At worst it was maybe a miscalculation of how people would take it. I don't see it as any different than offering people an option. If you feel weirded out playing as a different culture then don't play that skin, but I think it is actually pretty cool that somebody who lives that culture gets to see themselves represented...which lets be honest doesn't happen all the time.
also fwiw I've seen people in this very thread have problems with Roadhog's costume! he may (potentially) be pacific islander but the costume itself is uh, still not great!

I guess this gets to the bed rock of it for me....they did it with nearly all of them. It seems like they were just offering an option to be something completely different. Not that they were attempting to say "yay canon Pharah is Native American now".

There's also Zenyatta's skin.
Plus they were able to do good culturally consistent skins for some others, like Reaper (aka Gabriel Reyes), Zarya.
Not sure about Mercy's. Switzerland is not strictly Scandinavia but I don't know how widespread Norse culture is in the region

It's cultural misappropriation. kind of racist
