Something I've always loved about Freespace is how relentlessly it pursues its ideal of Space Opera beyond the visuals. The voice actor ordering the pilots around has a mouth full of the scenery at all times. He never stops. Nothing does. Every briefing is serious business, every escort mission is a disaster in the making, and when things have hit the fan you can both see and /hear/ how bad things are on account of the shrieking death rays outside your cockpit.

I love those death rays. I really do. That little vwwaaa noise when you pass a Shivan fighter is a timeless favourite of mine, too.

To this day I believe that the sheer perfection of Freespace 2 put the entire genre on pause for a decade.

FS2 being really good and only selling like 20,000 copies probably did put off potential competitors.

I'm sure we could bankroll freespace 3 if we could somehow combine FSO and India's passion for dance routines.

    According to Wikipedia:

"Despite all the glowing reviews, FreeSpace 2 sold poorly. The April 2000 issue of PC Gamer stated that only 26,983 copies had been sold in the first six months of its release.[67] These figures were acknowledged as disappointing, and described as awful by [Mike] Kulas [president of Volition]." -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeSpace_2#Reception

EDIT - added in bracketed text to elaborate on who "Kulas" referred to

For a pinnacle of the damned genre to sell that poorly--that's market research by a competitor that says the market has imploded.

I think Sokpuppet's flippant comment is actually correct: if I was a developer and I saw how FS2 was received despite being excellent, I would think long and hard before pouring money into another space sim.

Devs have openly stated in the past that Freespace 2, possibly the greatest space sim ever made, killed the genre.

    Um...holy crap.

It is confusing, a little newbie-unfriendly...but feels so GOOD when I figure out something! I have NO idea what I'm doing, except that apparently I'm some sort of broke bounty hunter. I randomly took patrol and kill missions and suddenly one of my targets jumped out of his cargo hauler and now I suddenly have two ships???

    What the hell???

I did some googling and saw a glimpse of the rabbit-hole...this isn't going to end well, is it?

You may recall an image that had to do with EVE's learning curve that's been floating around since the world was young. This steep cliff dotted with crucified unfortunates, more being bulldozed into mass graves on the side?

    Yeah.

    And here's the annoying part...

House of the Dying Sun and now X3:AP are making me SERIOUSLY look at and consider X:Rebirth (I know, I know, I've read recent and old reviews) as well as Elite. It's awoken that old itch. I'm much more likely to buy No Man's Sky now...

I never got Freespace 2 either when the world was young. I'm going to have to correct that now, I believe. I think I've got my old HOTAS around here somewhere...

Eh, opinions. I'm in the middle. It's not a true X game and lacks a lot of what makes the series great, but on it's own it's not a bad game. My main complaint with it is that it still runs like crap on a decent computer. It's playable, though. If you're really curious about the game, I'd wait a week until the Steam Summer Sale as I'm pretty sure it will get some kind of discount.

I hear people say this a lot, and I've never really known what they mean. What kind of marketing push were people expecting in 1999? I remember reading a ton of online previews linked from OGR and Blue's News, I remember the ads in Computer Gaming World and PC Gamer (that bright gray spread showing off the new beams, that they used as the box art), I remember watching the trailer, and I remember seeing the box on the shelf at Electronics Boutique. What kind of marketing was lacking? Back then you wouldn't really expect to see TV ads or movie trailers.

It was also a period of time where a few other genres were eating almost everybody's attention; that was one of those periods for PCs where if something wasn't an FPS or an RTS it tended to fall off the radar.

That and systems had a wider range of capabilities then than now; I think I remember grumbling at the listed requirements on the back of the box when I was eyeing FS2 while it was on the shelves.

Well I didn't reinstall it, because it was a fucking joke, but I've been following the updates and it doesn't look like they've added anything that would change my mind. I'm sure they fixed the absurd amount of bugs, but the basic structure of the game didn't work. The flying felt horrible, the copilot was one of the most obnoxious things I've ever seen in a game and the core gameplay was simply awful. Unless they've changed it so much that it's essentially a different game, stay away.

It's possible they'll pull their shit together for a sequel, but my money is on Egosoft simply not being able to compete now that they're not the only player in the space sims market.

The irritating thing about the X series is that with the right flight model, it would be fun to play.

Overly complex, not enough dynamic missions, shitty story...but it's the shitty shitty flight model that has always been the achilles heel in the series.

I spent a ton of time on the X3 series, even though they end up being spreadsheets. Lots of fun ships to fly, looked nice, decently deep business stuff. They really nailed a lot of it.

These days, developers are just coming to the table with way more polish than Egosoft. Better flight models, better VO, better everything. Egosoft had the market to themselves and they did well out of it, but expectations have changed. Hell, even with SC being out, people are still looking at the possibility of it and will say "nah, not impressed" to the janky games Egosoft come out with.

The worst thing about Rebirth is the fact that Egosoft alienated their core audience in favor of expanding their franchise to a larger player base. It would have been a great move, if the whole thing hadn't fallen flat on its face. So not only did they piss off their loyal fans, but they pissed off people new to the series who were likely drawn in by the recent resurgence of space sims.

A company that depends on their fanbase to fix their games post launch cannot survive competition. The only way Egosoft can stay in business is if they go back to the empire building formula. It's the only thing that separates them from the competition. But they're kinda fucked on that front too, because people like me won't buy their games anymore because we have options.

Bethesda games have some bugs and annoying design choices that get ironed out by mods. But are ultimately playable and enjoyable on day one. Egosoft has released straight up broken games that were fixed with a great deal of help from their community.

You can play a BethSoft vanilla game from start to finish and have a good time without having to consult hours of YouTube fan made tutorials. The same cannot be said for EgoSoft's flagship games.

You can enjoy the endgame content in a BethSoft title, just faffing around in the open world and cheesing the shit out of town guards or whatever you like to kill a few hours. The endgame content in an EgoSoft game is fucking broken and cannot be dipped into for fun times here or there; for every minute of enjoyment you successfully squeeze out of it, you need to spend 5 more in frustration just trying to make things work the way they are supposed to.

Like, why in the name of God would I play a modded X title when I can play modded Starsector? I can do almost everything that X offers in SS (or everything I thought was fun, anyway) - including just straight-up playing the market with a cargo hauling fleet - but it also doesn't crash, has a fun flight model, has well thought out game mechanics, has a pretty reasonable (if not brilliant) friendly fleet AI, etc etc. Even if BethSoft's games were as bad as EgoSoft's games (and they aren't), what game can I play to get the Skyrim experience or the New Vegas experience or the Fallout 4 experience as an alternative? There are all kinds of products, both available now & currently in development, that are excellent space sim sandboxes. If EgoSoft wants to keep a chair at the table, they really need to step-up their game and not only polish what they have on offer but make their titles stand out in a significant way.

Didn't notice that extra 'a' there until now. If I totaled up all my hours across Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas, I'd feel comfortable saying it'd run to a few hundred hours. Sure plenty of people have more, but I think by that point it's fair to say they're playable.

Bethesda games are fine Vanilla, they just have the whiniest fanbase out there.

Regarding the death of space sims: a lot of it has to do with the outlay. Like, X Wing Alliance is the only game I've ever bought that flat out wouldn't work without a peripheral. People, at that time, generally didn't want to buy a bunch of shit to get something to work. Enthusiast culture has changed a lot since then.

    Skyrim: 56
    Fallout 3: 64
Fallout New Vegas: 161 (Bethesda engine; that counts, right?)

Unfortunately I don't have numbers on X3: Reunion since my original copy is a physical one, and that's the one I played...

It was playable, but it required many, many searches and referencing to guides to figure out what I needed to do and how to do it. I don't know how the first people who got the game dealt with it.

The manual is useless, the tutorial worse than useless. The first time I started I got shot up, repaired myself, and that was the end of my money. The next time I got shot up I couldn't even repair myself. Scripting errors were a problem on a number of the campaign missions (though, to be fair, Bethesda's games tend to suffer similar problems). Ship capture isn't explained. Ship guidance isn't explained. Production isn't explained. Weapons aren't explained. Ship comparisons aren't easy. You need--literally need--addons to fix the performance problems you get you try to build an even modestly complicated production line.

X3 provided one hell of an econ simulator and it sure is pretty...too bad about the rest of the game.

I don't know how many hours I have in X3, but it's a LOT. Even accounting for time spent AFK while my spreadsheets ticked over. It's a very involving game when you get into it.

I know I spent much more time AFK with SETA at 8x than I did playing it...and that's a sign of problematic design in my book.

Flight sims had a decline at around the same time as space sims, where they went from mainstream games being produced by big publishers to niche titles that were marketed only at hardcore enthusiasts.

Like EA used to be publishing the Origin/Jane's Apache Longbow series
    Microsoft was publishing Flight Simulator
    Hasbro was publishing Falcon 4.0

Now I doubt any of those companies would budget a multi-million dollar project in those genres. Not enough mass appeal.

Longbow, ATF, F/A-18, F-15, USNF, WW2 Fighters (which was totally baller back in the day), USAF, 688(i) Hunter/Killer...they had a ton of simulation games. And I miss every one of them and wish GOG would pick them all up

EDIT - forgot to mention one other thing. Re: Microsoft, they actually did try to bring a decently made flight sim product to market in Microsoft Flight! Yes, it was F2P and you had to buy via micro-transactions different locations and other aircraft (of course, the only two locations they had on offer were the default Hawaii and the $20 Alaska pack (which I bought)...and they used generic "city" textures in Alaska to represent even small towns), but I felt it was still a decent enough game.

Yeah, Flight is pretty good, but unfortunately not much of a simulation. I think they tried to walk too fine of a line and didn't please either side. Still, I enjoy it for what it is and still like messing around in the Icon A5.

So much Freespace nostalgia on the boards today, I love it.
Did anyone play it online? My squad won a few of the competitive seasons. My callsign was RN-Scarab.

Apart from Rebel Galaxy, is there anything "space sim-y" out right now to play for PS4? No man's sky is pre-ordered.

X Rebirth is ok for dicking around and stuff. The only part I really hate is the walking around stations stuff. That shit is just terrible in every way. It's not intrinsically fun, the performance sucks, you can still get stuck on geometry occasionally like the vent covers.

I wouldn't be surprised if you can mod that shit out now. I think I'll look around the mods for Rebirth today and see what they have on the Workshop.

If X Rebirth did nothing else, it demonstrated that the fabled "Walk Around The Stations" feature that everyone always wants is not an inherently good idea. I think Frontier are correct when they point out "Sure, but then what do you do?"

I don't think you need to, Egosoft has made it so that you don't have to leave the ship to do things now. You can do it all from the ship menus from outside the station
