    Yeah that kinda sucks

I bought and played a bit of Between the Stars, it's pretty cool and conveys that feeling of controlling a big ship well. I like shooting lots of lasers at once.

I haven't played much else space sim related unfortunately, tried out the latest SC and it sure looks pretty and feels less janky, but still didn't really hold my attention.

Reasonably sure it is space enough to fit in here, I've been playing a bunch of PULSAR: Lost Colony since buying it in the summer sale. 5-person coop, you are the crew (Captain, Pilot, Engineer, Scientist, Weapons Specialist) on a ship and you fly around the galaxy doing stuff. Shoot pirates, gather rare materials to do science with, solve ancient puzzle doors, smuggle contraband, play liar's dice, sell biscuits, all sorts of stuff you can do.

Ooh, nice timing on that steam sale. I could do with some sitting VR experiences to dabble in. As a registered nerd, I think Star Trek Bridge Crew is a no brainer. How is Everspace? On the surface it seems I'd like it, sci-fi space battling rogue-like certainly hits a bunch of the right spots, has anyone played it though?

Fake edit: Seems that Everspace doesn't have joystick input? That's a big no-no there then :(

Honestly I wasn't a big fan of Everspace in VR. It's probably not fair to compare, but it just feels waaayyy less good than elite dangerous. It was actually giving me nausea because of how floaty it was, which pretty much never happens to me in cockpit games like that.

It isn't really a classic space sim, but has anyone played Void Expanse? Top down space shooter thingy, It's only a few bucks but the reviews on Steam are pretty mixed. Any thoughts?

I played Void Expanse before. Wasn't really feeling it.

However, if you are looking for a good top down space game experience I wholeheartedly recommend Star Sector. It's not on Steam and it is Early Access, but there is already a ton of content in the game and the Devs are adding more all the time. Plus there are a fair number of great mods for it that just make the experience all the better.

    https://youtu.be/eAvo3S0MD-o

If I had to describe it, I guess I'd say Space Mount & Blade?

You start off with one ship that you control and take missions, quests, do trade runs, explore and find hidden treasures (and dangers. . . so much danger). You can buy more ships to add to your fleet (that will be AI controled) or you can attempt to salvage ships after a battle (even battles that you didn't fight in!).

There are numerous factions, each with their own ships and styles of fighting. You can customize your weapon load outs. Launch Marine boarding parties. Conquer and control worlds, engage in diplomacy. The world management is very much what you would see in a 4x game.

And the mods! There are a bunch of mods that add new factions. What's great is that while individually some of these fan made factions might be a bit OP (the community does try to make things balanced) if you add a lot of the player made factions (or all of em!) everything ends up balancing itself out.

It's being made by one guy with a day job.

The current version is 0.9.1 though. Honestly if it "released" now it'd be more polished and content rich that more than a few AAA offerings of late.

    Aw, I made myself sad.

It's worth a try for the price, the story is a glorious, melodramatic Ace Combat / Gundam mashup. The combat is fun with a decent length campaign. And there's a good sense of immersion with lots of friendly and enemy units duking it out. As for difficulty, the first few missions are easy, but as you start fighting aces and warships you have to get very proficient at quick dodging and your usage of flares.

To be fair, your initial post said "Star Citizen" and not "Squadron 42." And I'd actually recommend loading up the SC alpha and giving it a whirl to see how the game plays out. That way you'll get a feel for the mechanics of the game for when SQ42 does start coming out.

Ehh...I mean, I guess? Every time there's a major update, I'll pop in and see what all is new. So, sure, you could twiddle your thumbs...or fly around a bit, run some missions, familiarize yourself with the flight model (complete with watching that flight model get completely overhauled in a subsequent update), and just see how the game is shaping up over time.

Although, I don't think object permanence is working quite yet...so any ships or equipment bought with in-game money (along with the in-game money itself) will get reset after, I think, major updates.

Dev just posted a big update to the skill system which looks like will fix skill progression and introduce late game play structures.

Though that will not be released till the next update which will be a while. Not sure if next release is 1.0 or .1 but the game will(should) actually be pretty close to release at that point

Steam doesn't take an exorbitant cut. They take the industry standard as does most any other store (digital or otherwise). If you bought a game from a brick and mortar location that store takes the same cut as Steam. Which is about 25%.

Truth be told if you are so very concerned with supporting publishers then never, ever buy a physical copy of any game ever again. Apart from that 25% cut there is also a whole host of other fees involved with physical sales. In the end publishers/devs only make around 50% of the sale of a physical copy. Whereas even with Steam it is 75% profit.
