A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
My heart swelled momentarily, believing this to be true, before being dashed into a thousand pieces.
But now I see that I have to be the change in the world I seek.

Ugh. Just got a LinkedIn request from a friend's wife. Known the guy for close to ten years, and bank in the day he used to be a fan of racial humor, and if you ever called him out on it he'd admit he was very racist in what also seemed like a joking fashion. Which, racists don't fucking do that, they hate being called racists. Only then he started dating this chick whose brother was an actual neo nazi and was racist in a way that could not be mistaken for funny, but it didn't last so it's like, maybe he made a huge mistake? Only nope, then we get to his current partner, now wife, who is also racist in the normal unaware awful fashion, only way less of a human dumpster fire than the previous girl.
It's the weirdest fucking thing too, they're both incredibly kind, even progressivish people except for the blatant racism. They aren't even mean to minorities, they just use it to think they're better than them, and also that the area they live in is several orders of magnitude more dangerous than it really is because it's 50% Latino. I don't fucking get it. Can't even cut ties completely because he wasn't /just/ my friend, though I've definitely distanced myself since it started being uncomfortable.
I mean, I accepted the LinkedIn request because going by the numbers here probably more than half my contacts are just secret racists like everyone else, but people are fucking weird man.

@kana new open access book edited by Patrick Galbraith (otakuologist and generally nice guy, I've met him at conferences a couple of time) has just been released, might have some interesting content you'd want to check out: https://archive.org/details/MediaConvergenceInJapan

I view racism or sexism how Patrice O'neal views people who hate dogs: it won't necessarily stop me from liking or befriending you. People are complicated. But it can impose a ceiling on how much affection develops. You can be my friend but you won't be my best friend.

Cmon jobs, call me back so we can pay this shit off and end this.
The rings came off tonight. If there was any hope of a reconciliation, it's pretty much gone at this point. On the one hand, I'm kind of happy about it... on the other hand, I'm kind of happy about it.
I just feel stuck because I know there are financial responsibilities we have to fulfill, but getting a good-paying job (even decent, 40k a year!) is proving quite difficult. If I managed to get it, we could have this crap paid off by new years, and the tax returns would allow us to pay off our car, removing every single joint financial thing we have.
Lease is up in March, so that's the ultimate deadline.

I haven't actually read any of it aside from the blurb and table of contents, since I'm currently doing presentation prep for next week, but since convergence/media mix practices play a large part in what I research I'll give it a skim when I can

It's talking about fans attending concerts and their perception of her "realness" as a performer, etc.

Right, I mean that's kind of where it's at here, because he's mostly lovely, but prolonged exposure gets uncomfortable. I also worry that if I'm really good friends with somebody who's an unabashed racist it'll pollute me by association, if someone were to use our friendship as validation that he was a good guy on my merit; which is why I originally distanced myself a little.
It's something that definitely happens too. Happened yesterday actually, recruiter I've been working with asked me about the guy. I didn't want to sabotage him, but I didn't want to give him a glowing review either you know?

This is a really fascinating piece. Makes a lot of what I've seen while over there suddenly click.
Otakuologist? Is that real? It doesn't sound real.
It's the term that kind of floats around for people who study otaku, my use in particular stemming from a dialogue between Galbraith and Thomas Lamarre titled 'Otakuology', it's in a Mechademia volume somewhere. There aren't, like, foundation professors in otakuology or anything, but there's enough material being published and researched on otaku to be able to start isolating work that belongs to the "otakuology" field
edit: that dialogue was published in Mechademia 5: Fanthropologies, if you want to look it up

Coming up with ridiculous words is half the fun of academia
My dad has had multiple times when confused translators have called him, asking what this word was, and he just goes, "oh, I made it up, I'm sure you can figure something out"

By all accounts French girl's brother has only justgot round to telling people that the baptism is cancelled. The only that would have been in three hours.
And he did his by email
There is some intense bitching and we're now expecting a series of confused relatives to start arriving shortly
