These guys are masters at world building. You can see hints of the past, and that they have a heck of a plan. I wouldn't be surprised if the origins of Voltron are covered at some point.
they get more into Zarkon's past as the Black Paladin and, presumably, when he worked with Alura's father (cause he had to be one too, right?) they will get more into Voltron and the lion's origins
I really like that the characters are well worn archetypes but don't feel like generic cut outs
Like Pidge is the nerdy science whiz but also has a lot more going on, Hunk is the friendly big guy but he's also kind of an engineering whiz and is more than a walking punchline, Lance is...well, he and Keith are probably the least fleshed out of the group but they're still a fun take on the pilot rival duo concept, Shiro is the mysterious badass but isn't a loner and likes the team and cracks jokes, Alura isn't just an aloof alien princess and Corin is actually pretty dang competent for all of his slapstick blunder.
This show is real good
At a few points I thought of Lance and Keith as smart Sokka and stupid Sokka.
They have a very strong Sokka and Zuko vibe.
Overexaggerated swagger guy who tries not to take it too seriously and hot headed direct approach guy who's incapable of taking a break.
The show runners talked about how they want to be character focused, so they emphasized the pilots a lot more, gave the Lions a little sentience so that they weren't like different colored cars (put the key in and go), and spent more time outside the Lions. I think they hit that part out of the park.
I wish they would go a bit further with the Lion Sentience
Alura describes their personalities in the pilot but after that they kind of just become lion shaped space ships

As someone who used to rent the same like 5 Voltron tapes from HEB as a child I dig the hell out of this show.
People may try to deny it but this show was confirmed anime as hell when:
The yellow lion's cannon fired an Itano circus.
Regarding the last episode:
I get they're setting up the second season but them leaving the hangar door during a hyperspace jump that goes awry feels to me like the dumbest way to do it.
I wish they would go a bit further with the Lion Sentience
Alura describes their personalities in the pilot but after that they kind of just become lion shaped space ships
It's there. There were quite a few times when I felt it was the lion doing things more than the pilot, especially one moment in the season finale that took me a bit to realize what they were indicating.

It might be but I really don't think they do it enough
The only time I can think of an outright example outside of the pilot is when they prompt Hunk and Keith to use their Bayards
Even then, they don't really use the personalities they assigned them
Like nothing the Green Lion does makes it seem especially curious and inquisitive

Keep in mind that was Alura speaking. You do also have that moment when the two lions, out of freaking no where, dive to protect Keith and I think Pidge.

I like that that first part is really understated. No one says "That bayard! That must mean...". It's just a bunch of taunts about how they're too weak to use the Lions to their full potential, and then they do a closeup of his weapon and it's the black bayard. It's pretty clear without beating you over the face with the reveal.

Which a lot of other shows would do
It also sets up what the Paladins will be capable of in the future a LOT better, including the line of Keith fighting like one of Zarkon's race.
They also never explicitly explain Quintessence.
But.. yeah. The implications of this, of Zarkon being 10k years old and the whole reason the King (man am I bad with names) separating the lions was to keep them out of Zarkon's hands, as it implies he was able to control all 5 by himself.. so on and so forth...
No idea if it's in the spoilers (haven't finished yet), but there's an amusing easter egg in the Academy stuff
All the instructors' names are people that work on the show.

I'm only partway through episode 2, but this show has been pretty damn good right out of the gates.
I particularly like how they fixed the red pilot-black lion/black pilot-red lion issue that always drove me up a wall about the original series.
Also, I'm not looking at spoilers, but I'm hoping since Keith, Hunk, Pidge, and Lance were part of the original team and that Shiro is the replacement for Sven, that they take a similar route and have Shiro disappear like Sven so Allura can take over his lion, except now she'd be leader!
Also also, I think someone else mentioned it when I was scrolling/scanning the thread, but I really feel like Pidge is trans or non-binary. It's entirely possible that the creators have that intent behind the character but can't explicitly state due to producers or whatever. They've had implied non-cishet in the Avatar universe, so I wouldn't put it past them to try to do so here as well. And since it's not an actual network with their S&P to deal with, maybe they'd be able to do more so with this kind of thing?

I just finished this. Damn, that cliffhanger
I don't know how sound this theory is but I wonder *last ep spoilers*
if Shiro only has a bond with the black lion because of his link with Zarkon.
Oh and also *series spoilers*
I was thinking a few episodes towards the end that they were setting up Shiro to be a traitor, what with the whole not remembering how he escaped and being all weird when interrogating Sendak and so on.

I agree to a degree.
I remember loving this hook of Arrow, where you see the end and the beginning and bits are filled in.. at least, through Season 1, I didn't see much more than halfway into Season 2. Shiro's definitely got more going on. The bad guys seem to have a thing about missing arms.

Opting for a second go-through of the series, and I caught that some of Zarkon's generals are also color coded. With the red general having the red lion in the first episode, and Zarkon's comment about training him himself I'm pretty sure Zarkon was training up his own team of dudes to pilot the other lions, and building them up with enhancements along the way,
Interestingly, it's the blue general who betrays Zarkon.

There's a lot to love about this series, but one detail that I really appreciated was the "ticks" vs "seconds" discussion. I don't remember what episode it was, but the humans and Alteans figured out that their units of time don't match up, which seems like it should be a bigger trope in sci fi stories, but this is the first time I remember seeing it.

Allura turns out to be surprisingly kickass in this show, on her own.
And given she already commands the hangar ship, I don't know if she really needs a lion to hold her own in this show.
They're Sokka and Zuko, respectively. I can't unsee it.
And I did like how none of the characters, good or bad, ever held the idiot ball (except maybe Lance, because Lance) to advance the story. Now I'm excitedly awaiting the second season.

Made it through episode 4 right now and I'm really enjoying it. The characters, good and bad, have depth that I'm really enjoying. The bad guys seem competent enough to be plausible bad guys, the good guys want to do the right thing but are also torn because a few weeks ago they were cadets and now they've been tasked to save the universe! The Princess is bad ass and I love Rhys Darby's character. Good comic relief but in the end still quite competent.

I suspected Shiro was a sleeper agent from, like, the first episode onward.
But I guess it turned out he was a failed experiment?
Or maybe not. There's no explanation as to why he lost his memory for a while, is there?

Not yet. Apparently he was experimented on by the Druids, something that is done a LOT by the looks of it. You can see his hair changed color and a few other changes beyond the arm. But his memory is still fractured.
Also, apologies if I constantly talk about this. I really am excited about this show.

My big suspects right now:
1. Coran - Based mostly on a feeling due to the occasional defeatist line and a few moments where the camera shifted subtly to him and lingered while everyone talked about the traitor.
2. Shiro's arm - The mole isn't a person but the tech inside the arm, which they don't really understand.
3. The Black Lion - Still under the control of the enemy, which was the real reason it was imprisoned in the castle.
4. Shiro - The setup is too obvious at this point. It's very rarely the most obvious suspect
