I get the impression the arena is where Zarkon gets his soldiers. Shiro was the current champ and the Druids were altering him to be a better soldier and prepping him for a mindwipe before they tossed him in the army proper which is hinted to promote based on acheivment. He was likely on track to be a general

I love everything about it, from the characterizations, to how Princess Allura is literally a battlefield commander, to the humor. Such a great show.
Spoiler regarding world building:
I'm only on episode 9, but there seems to be a bit of ambiguity regarding science vs. magic. For example, the Druids appear to be magical, but I'm not sure if it's really magic or just highly advanced science. Same with the lions themselves. Sure they could be sentient via AI, and their extensive capability and function is solely the result of highly advanced science, but I can't help but think that in this universe the lions are infused with something else to make the technology more "alive."
Pretty bummed about them going with the "heavy set dude is the gross comic relief" trope.
Everyone has some goofy moments, but Hunk does tend to have more. But he's also later shown as incredibly competent and brave when it counts and stuff.

Hunk's moments have a very subtle self-awareness to them. Overall, he comes off less as dense and more someone with a very idiosyncratic sense of humor.

Hunk definitely comes off as "haha, fat guy loves food" in the pilot but he, like all the characters, develops a surprising amount for how few episodes the first season has.
Hunk's super long monologue about the thermal coupler was hilarious and showed just how competent he is.
I loved how they turned the usual "vague suspicion based on gut feeling ends up right" trope around by showing that, nope, he was just Sherlock Holmesing the scene the whole time.

Yea, I'd say while Hunk has some moments it is Coran who is largely the comic relief. Even then he is still at bare minimum competent, with quite a few moments where he shines.

Yeah, as someone who is pretty touchy about how fat people are represented in media (being fat, and all) I really like what they've done with Hunk.

I'm a leg!
Me too buddy, let's do some sweet jump kicks!
Episode 5&6
And I absolutely love how no one but Lance is actually surprised when Pidge tells them she's a girl.
Coran: Wait, we were supposed to think you were a boy?
The implication is that either they are standard issue all the Paladins have them, or the original Blue Paladin had them made
I'm not sure which is funnier
Lance will probably be the only one that wears it.

Also, this excitement has prompted me to try to find the blu rays of Korra.. Which is extremely hard. Sigh.
And if you still don't want to pilot a Lion, I also have Allura and Coran

He was showing that even in the first episode
You know what........ I'll take Coran.
I haven't changed my avatar in.... three years? Four?!
Ah hell. Enough people think of me as a girl for the MLP shit already, I'll go with Allura.
If we don't want to throw off the Voltron crew thing, I can take Keith. I feel weird about taking Shiro.
edit: actually, I will take Shiro! Sorry for being flip-floppy!
Because Pidge is the best

Eh. The show's new enough that there are still spoilers abound.
Now to think of something quippy...
