Guys and gals, the question shouldn't be "why can't we have a female Link?" It should be "why can't we have a Zelda game where she's the protagonist?"
And when I say "a Zelda game" I mean this fucking game right here, not "Zelda's Pretty Princess Dressup." Flip the script. Make Link the Prince. Christ, it's not difficult. I also firmly believe Link should stay male while Zelda is female. Those characters are established. I like having Link be Link and Zelda be Zelda, but there is literally zero reason you can't change up their roles.
in my opinion a game with zelda as the protagonist should focus on the unique aspects of her own character, such as being the ruler of a kingdom and being the avatar of wisdom. something like divinity: dragon commander where you're dealing with political intrigue and management simulation and strategy, with maybe some night scouting missions as sheik.
It's like the backlash with FFXV on how there are no female party members.
The devs just kept digging their own hole deeper and deeper with each response, when it would have been far better to say nothing or just offer a simple "we didn't plan that with this concept".
Any attempts to give a narrative or thematic reason is just going to get picked the fuck apart.
I'm torn on this one, since I was really disappointed there were no female party members in FF15 and it turned me right off the game.
But at the same time, the first female character they showed at Sony's conference was HEY LOOK AT THEM TITS IN VR and man I just don't know anymore.
I still blame the continuously shitty marketing about that more than anything else.
They've said multiple times that the character in question is a minor character who doesn't factor much into the story.
The problem is they keep showing her in the marketing instead of focusing on the actual principle heroine, who from what we've seen won't be subjected to any cleavage shots or anything of the sort.
FFXV might be an excellent game, but they sure as shit have done a poor job convincing you of that.

This would be neat but they use a different Zelda every time and I'd love to play a more athletic Zelda opposite a more diplomatic link
Apparently I was wrong, point conceded. Has this been a running problem? Like was there uproar over this prior and this is just the first I've heard of it?

It doesn't have to be a binary. They could add playable female characters and not objectify the shit out of them.

I discovered while discussing in another thread that I want a Zelda where Zelda is the main character and Link is the Sheik analogue, helping you out along the way and still being a badass but with the usual triforce/identity reveal later on.
Actually, that's an interesting question: if Zelda were playable would the Courage/Wisdom alignments remain the same? Would Link be in possession of his piece throughout the story? Would you?

FF15 being the adventures of prince whoever and his best bro buddies is why I have zero interest in it whatsoever. That's not a story I can see myself caring about in any capacity. Then they showed Cid's outfit and sheesh.

It's less that there has been an uproar and more that it was unclear in the initial reveal for this Zelda title, which actually got people excited by the possibility.
Then Linkle came along, and rumors started surfacing that you would be able to choose your gender in this title, which would have been a change that would have the benefit of making a lot of people feel better included, and a downside of literally actually nothing whatsoever.
And then they didn't do it, which would be disappointing but fine, and then they came out and said they knew people wanted that but here is our reason which itself is way worse than the fact that you can't play as a girl.

that is the question nintendo asked themselves, and they decided that don't want to answer it.

There's also nothing immediately wrong with having a sexy female character.
The problem is A) she's the one they keep focusing on and they've done nothing to flesh her out beyond the sexiness.
I hold out a very small misguided hope that the "date" that the VR mode teases will be the chance to actually learn about Cindy's character and actually flesh out an intriguing relationship between her and Prompto.
I know, I shouldn't hold my breath, but the possibility exists.

people would like nintendo to have more playable female characters in general - many of nintendo's female cast are Damsels In Distress. Protagonists of their own series are Samus (a character who has been increasingly sexualized in official designs over the years) and Bayonetta (Bayonetta). female playable characters are generally relegated to non-personality roles like Pokemon Trainer or Animal Crossing Villager
in a vacuum, people would just want these things. but nintendo's responses to some of those wishes has at times sounded kinda Old Man Sexist like "why would them ladies be runnin' around stead of puttin' on makeup" (that's an exaggeration, but that's the kind of sexism people see, not stuff like "Women Are Inferior", just gender role stuff). this makes people have more extreme opinions out of emotional response

I've talked about this with people before. I'd love to see a traditional-style Zelda game (2D or 3D, I just mean no weird spin-off stuff) where you play as Zelda and the game design plays to the Wisdom aspects. Combat would be more tactical and less just charge forward and slash at things. Puzzles would be more intricate and more heavily interwoven into everything. Show Zelda as the hero who works smarter, not harder.

No Soldier 76 no sale.
final fantasy 15 VR should have been their Sad Dad trailer, except you can walk up to him and watch him cry in your face

A Zelda-starring Zelda game should ideally be different
But this is all not even academic at this point
Top for me are probably Titanfall 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn.

hopefully not!

I think mine are Titanfall 2, Dishonored 2 and Zelda.
The show in terms of revealing new games is essentially over, is it not?
It was an interview. The dude was answering a question. Not a great answer, but it was probably just the first thing that came to mind.
Now if they could add Linkle as DLC I'd be all over that. She's damn amazing in Hyrule warriors.

I don't know if it adds shit to a codex or whatever, but it marks enemies on your map Far Cry style AND gives you a numerical breakdown of their HP
Which, again
I know I keep saying this
But I never expected to see that shit in a Zelda game
