Guys and gals, the question shouldn't be "why can't we have a female Link?" It should be "why can't we have a Zelda game where she's the protagonist?"
And when I say "a Zelda game" I mean this fucking game right here, not "Zelda's Pretty Princess Dressup." Flip the script. Make Link the Prince. Christ, it's not difficult. I also firmly believe Link should stay male while Zelda is female. Those characters are established. I like having Link be Link and Zelda be Zelda, but there is literally zero reason you can't change up their roles.
in my opinion a game with zelda as the protagonist should focus on the unique aspects of her own character, such as being the ruler of a kingdom and being the avatar of wisdom. something like divinity: dragon commander where you're dealing with political intrigue and management simulation and strategy, with maybe some night scouting missions as sheik.
Shovel Knight I believe revealed gender-swap mode during the Kickstarter campaign - why is not not in already, all they have to do is change up the sprites and done.
The reason is yacht club is nearly certainly going to want to change the entire game around when they implement it, like with plague knight.
My guess is Nintendo is probably thinking along those lines when they consider female link, which is why they say it's simpler to just have playable Zelda, but to them Zelda is tied to being the avatar of wisdom etc as you describe so it ironically wouldn't be a LoZ type game anymore
But no one is asking for necessarily a playable Zelda. They just want to Pokemon it where Sahasrahla asks you at the start "Are you a boy or a girl?" and all that changes is your character model and a few pronouns in dialog.
I know
But they don't want to do it that way is my guess
They just confirmed in an interview that the game will have no towns. They clarified that it's a Hyrule in ruins and they took direct inspiration from the world of the NES LOZ. They did confirm that there will be a handful of stray NPCs throughout the world but no towns or villages in the traditional sense. Also, they claimed that link will not have any kind of partner and will be exploring alone for the entire game.

This would be neat but they use a different Zelda every time and I'd love to play a more athletic Zelda opposite a more diplomatic link
I want to be a lady who kicks ass
Like Tetra, before discovering that she's the current Zelda magically makes her lose her tan and her personality

That sounds like the worst thing, if true
e: ghosted
I'm down for it, personally, but considering that bizarre and endearing NPCs are a series staple at this point, I definitely understand why it would be a disappointment to people.
Lack of towns makes me think more of Shadow of the Colossus
But it's an interesting thought, to me, because it means the little pockets of humanity you do find, like the ranchers from the first trailer, might end up being pretty important and unique
They're going all in on the lonely hero adventure, pretty much making a game that's the polar opposite of Skyward Sword in terms of its focus
Very curious how that's goign to feel

No towns is whatever, no partner character and sparsely inhabited world sounds fucking perfect though.
I am getting worried that this Big Open World is Mostly Empty
I feel like BoW is taking me on a rollercoaster ride
I am hearing good thing bad thing good thing very rapidly
Well, any game this big is bound to have some stuff that won't appeal to some people. Also, some of this stuff could be better (or worse) than it sounds, so I'd withhold judgement on any of the non-tangibles. Focus on what we've seen, which is the cool gameplay.

then they shouldn't have given a frankly kind of offensive answer and just said nothing or "because we don't want to"
While I don't know why Linkle isn't in there as an alternative character to play as - I do think that despite the original intentions of Link as a generic link to the player, Link has become a standalone recognizable brand and character that you can't just flip to female at this point. He is in far too much marketing, merchandising and games to just decide now that he's a character that can be customized similar to a Pokemon trainer.
Push for a Zelda staring game? Sure. Push for Linkle to be playable? Absolutely. But I don't think I want choices in the appearance/gender of the character Link any more than I'd want to select Mario's gender.

And her proactive role in the story. "Now stay here and wait to be captured by ganon."
Come to think of it, in OoT as soon as Sheik revealed she was Zelda she got captured by Ganon so Link could save her. Hmmm...
I don't know, I always liked to see the differently designed settlements, Goron/Zora city, Kakariko, Gerudo, maybe even Kokiri.
I could get behind scaling those down, because of whatever ruined Hyrule, but riddle me this: if there's no one around, what exactly are you saving
It's pretty lazy to put it on Nintendo. Gaming is much bigger than Nintendo, has been for years and years now.
The biggest issue is it was marketed as a toy and the toy market is heavily skewed toward boys to this day, and was far worse back in the 80's. Nintendo chose to buy into that, though and helped keep that idea going back when the industry was finding its way. And once that happened, well, momentum's a bitch and as successful as Nintendo was, no one really felt any need to question their decisions.

he's referring to the marketing decisions Nintendo made back when the market was basically Nintendo with Sega chasing them in the late 1980s-early 1990s

yeah I guess it depends on what "no towns" means
but if I don't see like little camps at least I'm going to be super bummed

I want to select Mario's gender. Gender is almost never a crucial aspect of a fictional character's, well, character.

I disagree
Link might be recognizable, but they've gone out of their way to state that every Link is a different person. "Link" is a concept, more than a character, whereas Mario is Mario and has always been Mario
Every Mario you see is the same Mario--it's how you know he's really smart, because he was a doctor and a referee and a sportsman and taught you typing
Every Link you see is not the same Link--some are older, some are younger, some are both at once, while others are fairies or gods and still others are simple farm folk or what have you. So why can't one be a girl?

Why don't you want to
Same answer, which imo boils down to we would have it play differently
My understanding is it was a question they asked themself but probably only because of the intense rumors and speculation around it
Did NoJ even absorb the idea that people would be ok with and even wanted a simple swap? Unknown
I remember a similar reason being given for The Last Story.
Anyhow, as for no towns, I'm fine with it. I always thought Nintendo should remake the original Legend of Zelda ala Zero Mission, and this seems to be a sort of reimagining in a way. I'm a fan.
