I know so little about Japanese culture at large, but especially about gaming and corporate culture and its relation to the larger population
Like, are the views on gender roles and all that common across the country? Or is it just in video games? Or just in corporations? Is it an age thing? How great a value is placed on that stuff these days and how big is the conversation surrounding them?
So much dumb shit has come out of major studio representatives lately and every time it makes me wish I knew more about what their whole situation is like
Japanese developers always seem to have even more latent sexism than western developers
"all girls wear skirts" "everyone knows girls are inherently less physically tough and brave than boys" "the fantasy of all girls is getting rescued by the heroic boy" etc. etc.
even when they flip those tropes it feels like they do it while shouting LOOK WE'RE SUBVERTING THE TROPE, A GIRL HERO WOW (but don't worry she's also secretively sensitive and weak and vulnerable and needs you, male gamer target audience, to protect her in the end!)
I don't know, I always liked to see the differently designed settlements, Goron/Zora city, Kakariko, Gerudo, maybe even Kokiri.
I could get behind scaling those down, because of whatever ruined Hyrule, but riddle me this: if there's no one around, what exactly are you saving
What are you saving indeed
You wake up in a "shrine of resurrection" and a mysterious voice tells you to follow a smartphone
Guys and gals, the question shouldn't be "why can't we have a female Link?" It should be "why can't we have a Zelda game where she's the protagonist?"
And when I say "a Zelda game" I mean this fucking game right here, not "Zelda's Pretty Princess Dressup." Flip the script. Make Link the Prince. Christ, it's not difficult. I also firmly believe Link should stay male while Zelda is female. Those characters are established. I like having Link be Link and Zelda be Zelda, but there is literally zero reason you can't change up their roles.
in my opinion a game with zelda as the protagonist should focus on the unique aspects of her own character, such as being the ruler of a kingdom and being the avatar of wisdom. something like divinity: dragon commander where you're dealing with political intrigue and management simulation and strategy, with maybe some night scouting missions as sheik.
Shovel Knight I believe revealed gender-swap mode during the Kickstarter campaign - why is not not in already, all they have to do is change up the sprites and done.
The reason is yacht club is nearly certainly going to want to change the entire game around when they implement it, like with plague knight.
My guess is Nintendo is probably thinking along those lines when they consider female link, which is why they say it's simpler to just have playable Zelda, but to them Zelda is tied to being the avatar of wisdom etc as you describe so it ironically wouldn't be a LoZ type game anymore
But no one is asking for necessarily a playable Zelda. They just want to Pokemon it where Sahasrahla asks you at the start "Are you a boy or a girl?" and all that changes is your character model and a few pronouns in dialog.
I know
But they don't want to do it that way is my guess
then they shouldn't have given a frankly kind of offensive answer and just said nothing or "because we don't want to"
Follow up question
Why don't you want to
Same answer, which imo boils down to we would have it play differently
My understanding is it was a question they asked themself but probably only because of the intense rumors and speculation around it
Did NoJ even absorb the idea that people would be ok with and even wanted a simple swap? Unknown
I'd find female Mario weird. Link I get, he's the most "empty vessel" character in the Nintendo roster. Some non-princessy female characters in the Mario universe would be neat though
Maybe no towns means I won't have to deal with annoying ass NPCs that want to force me to get a ridiculous score on their stupid fucking mini-games so I can have the doodad I need to help save their world.

why would a girl and boy play differently
because deeply indoctrinated sexist concepts of gender roles
Like, if the world isn't sufficient dense this could be twilight princess on an even larger scale, just without any central hub
Twilight Princess had a problem of stretches where you weren't really doing anything
This doesn't seem to have the same problem, with how interactive the environment is
Apparently all the Shrines of Trials act as fast-travel waypoints, too, so at least we won't have much by way of empty traveling once we get that option
I challenge anyone who finds gender-swapped characters weird to really explore why they feel that way.
(Not that there's necessarily anything WRONG with not liking the idea. I just think there's a lot of value in challenging our preconceptions about gender roles and gender identity as it pertains to fictional characters. There are absolutely characters for whom it would be weird, for whom gender is an important part of who they are. But for a large number of characters, that's not really the case.)

Younger Japanese women have by and large embraced aspects of feminism but the culture as a whole is still kind of weird about it.

There's only two things I'm iffy about, neither are dealbreakers
The fact that the character's name is actually spoken aloud as Link weirds me out, I don't really like it. It's gonna be weird to not be called Jim in a Zelda game. But ultimately that's the same as him being right-handed-- I'm left-handed, so the idea of the hero being a left-handed kid with my name was always something special to me. Disappointing, but I can deal.
The other thing that bugs me is the British accent. Especially if that's Zelda who's speaking. I know it's not uncommon for people to liken Zelda to LOTR, but that's always rang very false to me. Zelda's never felt like a generic Western medieval fantasy setting to me, it has a flavor all its own. The British accent calls to mind a setting that isn't really compatible with how I think of the series and feels very off. I didn't like that one Wind Waker commercial for the same reason. I'll probably get used to it though. Not sure what accent would be the best fit anyway.
Also disappointed for the lack of female option, but that's more disappointment for other people. I wasn't going to use it, I just want everyone to be included and it makes so much sense.

Yeah, like
Why can't a girl bear the Triforce of Courage
No one has an answer for this because none exists
the triforce of courage is a member of the He-man woman haters club. it's why link never hooks up with Zelda either.

You wake up in a "shrine of resurrection" and a mysterious voice tells you to follow a smartphone
Calling it: the whole map is a ruse and after the plateau, one of those shrines will take you into SPACE
Link is androgynous enough that you wouldn't even need a model change, but frankly the idea that you would need to have a model change can be sexist as hell in of its self.

I want to see female counterparts that match their male versions and vice-versa. So a short, stocky, energetic plumber lady and her lanky sister.
Yeah alright
No release date but Nintendo's been streaming gameplay for a total of about two or three hours now
Not really. Nothing about the movement or the combat says Dark Souls to me at all.

I posted the video on Facebook last night. The only two responses were:
Mom: NORMAN REEDUS!!! THAT LOOKS AMAZING!!!
and
Female Cousin (shared with friends, tagged female friend): He's even perfect animated.
So, yeah, sure, go ahead!
