The sounds of splashing combat from the eastern side of the room attract Barran's attention, and he sees Dural trading blows with one ghoul even while being able to send another reeling into the murk.

"Angus!" Barran cries as best he can, "I need a crossbow!"
Still, the little rogue isn't completely helpless now that he has some distance between himself and ragged bloody claws. A spurt of flame launches across the room as Barran tries to even the odds against Dural... The flame strikes the ghoul dead on (pun very much intended), but hisses into a burst of steam without dealing much damage to its waterlogged flesh.

I really thought you were going to try and melee it...

Also, @Steelhawk you got me excited with Ghoul 1 being C2 in the stat block... was going to charge after the one Dural just proned (We actually haven't had many chances to attack proned targets it seems)! Pretty sure that's a typo, though, so I'll correct it.

    Action: Attack Ghoul 1
Bonus: Flurry of Blows Ghoul 1
    * Knock prone first (DC13 vs. Dex)
    * Knock back to D0 second (DC13 vs. Str)
Move: If knock back to D0, move to E1

Ducking low as the waterlogged creature swipes at Ay, he spins around, connecting solidly to the torso of the creature sending it teetering to the side and helping it dodge the follow up. However, a well placed kick to the creatures knee has it straining for its balance.

@Steelhawk DC13 vs. Dex for Prone.

Yes. Good catch on the incorrect stat block location. That Ghoul is now Prone!

@Mongrel Idiot - Top of Round 3 and now Philo can act! Start your turn in SQUARE K1, splashing your way down the ramp. Angus couldn't hear Barran's shout for a crossbow. but Philo definitely did, and the pile of Barran's gear is, like, right there.

Hearing Barran's shout, Philo holds off on drawing his sword. He stoops as he runs, scooping up the crossbow and quiver, then carries on, splashing into the water. "Barran!" he shouts, tossing the weapons and ammo into the halfling's chest as he runs by. Surveying the battlefield, he draws steel and plunges toward Dural, calling "Hold them a moment longer, Dural!" as he goes.

Guessing that picking up and delivering Barran's weapons counts as an action, so I can only get to G3 this turn.

Philo charges into the room, splashing his way through the water and tossing the crossbow at Barran, who catches it deftly. He then draws his sword and plunges its straight down into the Drowned ghoul as it is rising to its feet after being knocked down by Ay.

Not quite finished yet, the horrendously wounded creature rakes its claws at the Elf's face! Pain blossoms as the claws on its hands bite deep into the Elf's face and upper chest. Or they would have, had not Philo brought up his shield just in time to deflect the claws! The cursed magic that powers the Drowned paralysis ability has no effect on Elves, however. The other one rises back out of the water and does the same against Dural, this time it cannot breach the Dwarf's protective plating.

Dural pauses for a moment as one of the ghouls next to him bubbles and bursts into brief flame before falling into the water and transitioning into steam. Barran snatched his crossbow out of the air when Philo tossed it to him as the human ran into the fray. Now he loads it carefully, keeping the mechanism out of the water, then looks around for a target. Dural is continually knocking one of the ghouls down into the water whenever it pops up, which would probably work on anything that had to breathe but for the moment is denying Barran from getting a clean shot at it. That leaves only one other ghoul, so Barran takes his shot.

With a shunk, a bolt appears between the creature's eyes and it collapses like a puppet with its strings cut.

Yeah, as Aegis said, prone basically just means "not standing." From the PHB:

"A condition lasts either until it is countered (the prone condition is
countered by standing up, for example)"

    "Prone
    • A prone creature’s
only movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition.
    • The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls.
    • An attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet o f the creature. Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage."

See.....but, narratively, I really dig Philo running in and tossing the crossbow to Barran and hitting a dude, followed by Barran killing a dude with it the well timed crossbow, and then running over and killing another dude. That's some heroic shit right there, and I wanna see it happen.

Refluff your action so that Philo is running as far as he can, and then hurls his swords across the remaining distance. Roll your attack again with Disadvantage, mooted by the Advantage gained from the Drowned being prone, and lets hope you hit it :)

I think that prone gives disadvantage on ranged attacks, and Philo carries a pair of handaxes anyway. I'll see if I can brain the thing with one of those.
The ghoul crumples into the water and Philo turns to aid Dural, sizing up the kneeling, reeling monster next to the dwarf. He slings his shield and draws an axe from his belt, sending it whirling end-over-end as he splashes toward the ghoul.

Also, some tidbits since it may be relevant, especially with several of us able to knock prone. I know some of these made me double take because they are fairly different than previous versions.

Prone in this edition doesn't differentiate between melee and ranged/spells. So, if a target is prone and you are engaged (within 5 feet) of the target, you get advantage whether you use a sword, a crossbow, or fire leaking from your fingertips.

Also in this edition, there is exactly one way to provoke an opportunity attack, and that is to (willingly) disengage from an enemy without taking the disengage Action. This is it. This is important because it means you CAN fling bolts or flames in melee range without provoking an attack.

In terms of disengaging, this means moving further than 5 feet from the enemy. You can dance around the enemy all you want without provoking, as long as you never get more than 5 feet from it. Obviously if you are engaged with two enemies it will make things a little tighter. This is important because it means you can dance around an enemy to get next to a tank to benefit from their Protection feature as long as you aren't moving away from another enemy.

Another interesting difference. The Protection feature of Dural and Philo doesn't require the ENEMY is next to them, it requires YOU are next to them. So they don't need to be next to the enemy to defend you. They just need to be next to you. Think of it like they see the attack coming and they grab your shoulder to pull you out of the way.

So, for Barran and Sal this all comes together to say that you can get advantage against prone targets by engaging them and you can dance around them to stay close to the tanks to benefit from their Protection. Obviously there may be exception to the rule (feats are a great example, but I'm sure some mobs will have special features from time to time also).

Edit: I don't normally like to talk Tactics without being asked, but I also don't want Bursar or evilthecat to feel like Prone takes away their options (just changes them a bit), because Prone is immensely powerful for Ay, Dural and Philo, above and beyond just the Advantage. For Ay, it's control (I can knock prone and try to push targets away to either get them away from squishy targets or push them into a tank to help lock them down). For Dural and Philo it's about stickiness, especially Dural. If a target eats half of their movement speed standing up and then use Disengage to get away, they won't be able to go far enough that Philo and Dural couldn't follow and still have their Action to do something.

The last Drowned drops into the dark water with a splash, never to rise again. A hush falls over the Temple, the only sounds are your heavy breathing and the water lapping up against the sides of the chamber as it settles back down. Finally, this room is clear...

Angus appears at the top of the ramp, "Oi! What's going on down there? Philo tore outta here like his arse was on fire! Everythin' OK?"

"Nothing too major, Angus!" calls Philo as be braces a foot against the Drowned's chest. "Adventure. Derring-do. Thrilling heroics." He pulls the axe free with a wet splattering noise, and a few droplets of moist brain-matter splatter onto his face. His face scrunches up in disgust. "And a little nausea, apparently."

// Prone kinda dicks ranged people over but I can live with it; that mob won't be reaching me next round and once I have fireball it'll have disadvantage on it's dex saving throw.

"See, that's why I stripped down. You'll be picking Ghoul brains from your armor for weeks.
Say Barran, did you find anything of note whilst examining that statue?"

Barran holds up the rings found in the statue, turning them this way and that to sparkle in whatever light is available.
"A couple of rings that somebody wanted to keep hidden."
