I loved pandorum. It was a concept that hit like 90% but didn't quite follow through in a grandiose way to mark it as extraordinary.

Had they explored the other creatures as some sort of tribal interwaring factions on a ship they could have used it to develop the protagonist characters in a more interesting way. I duno. Still loved it.

Saw The Babadook. It struck me as a monster movie melded with some sort of possession stuff. Cabin in the Woods reminded me of Sam Rami stuff and was pretty great. I saw The Corridor last year and enjoyed it as well. I think I enjoy the suspense and mystery of horror films and when the plot twist is that there is no plot twist I really enjoy it.

The Babadook was exhausting to watch.

I wonder if you can buy that pop-up book?

Conjuring 2 was fine but kinda derivative

lots of focus on the Warrens as a couple which might not be super interesting to folks who aren't big fans

    first one was better

I watched Godfather I & II multiple times as a kid and an adult.

Never liked it as much as Goodfellas or Casino. Those were always my favorite "mob" movies where those characters were front and center. Ghost Dog with Forrest Whittaker is another favorite, but only one made guy is a MC.

Just sat down this week to finally watch Sopranos. I'm liking it so far.

Spooks (AKA MI-5) was a great, exciting UK counterpart to 24 during its first 2-3 seasons, after which they went through most of the good characters in record time, so I quit it. The early seasons with Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley "I was Lara Croft" Hawes and David Oyelowo were good stuff.

If you like the show Spooks you might like the movie Page 8. One of my favorite "spy" movies.

The actual creature is the least engaging part of pretty much every monster horror movie ever made, except for Alien and The Thing.

And even Alien is a lot more effective when you just see glimpses. That's just how horror works. What you see is always inferior to what you imagine you might see.

In a bit of onset wanderlust from work, caught a matinee of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. First off, props to the babies who were brought there by their mothers, they slept through it all like champs when I guess their moms didn't get to the theater in time to watch Me Before You. But Popstar; it's a good movie, overall kind of runs on a one good joke to one bad type schedule, but like the story itself it's filled with a lot of unnecessary fluff/yesmen from the music world that wanted to get in on the joke, which actually undermines some of the story/humor here, which is trying to be a Spinal Tap for millenials or whatever name we're on now (they even had the balls to do a modern version of the Spinal Tap album reviews topped off with copying shit sandwich which is just, you best check yourself, bros).

Like Spinal Tap, this is following a pop star named Conner4Real who went from being in a boy band called Style Boyz to his new updated solo work where he's reinvented himself, and on the cusp of his second album dropping we sit in for the ride downhill. He's got one of his old band members being his DJ who does nothing but play from his iPod, and the other member who Conner disrespected and claimed credit for his lyrics which made him a solo star is now living on a farm in Colorado. The other major character is The Ladies Man, who is Conner's manager. So we go from parodies of Justin Bieber to Macklemore's shitty songs to bad reviews for the album and struggles in tour sales, leading to getting a crazy upcoming rapper to be his opening act (who starts to steal the spotlight too). Pretty predictable path, but some good jokes along the way.

The highlights are mostly the songs themselves, which 90% of them hit spot on (my favorite is Ibitha, which is supposed to be Ibiza but he's over-enunciating everything like when people announce they've made Pai-jay-eh for a party ). Most of the hijinks Conner does also get good laughs as he tries to do more concert tricks or hating people trying to get the Style Boyz back together. And some of the old SNL alums come back for brief bits of funny, like Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph, and I wish we got more time with them and about half of the musicians interviewed talking about how important Conner's works are to them.

Where the film starts to lose it is by having a lot of other unnecessary cameos, from the other half of the musicians (feels like all Usher does now is this kind of stuff), or some other clinger ons like DJ Khaleed, and you have people like Justin Timberlake show up to not really be acting but more to go "hey, audience, it's me Justin Timberlake! I'm pretending to be Conner's chef who's shy and picked on by him but I have a great voice LOL m i rite it's such a different thing to reality I'll stare at the camera some more so you know it's really me, Justin Timberlake!" Plus there's a really, really bad, [Genre] Movie type running joke of the TMZ TV show people that is just hard to watch. Like damn, which producer demanded that skit to stay in? Was it written by his aspiring comedian son or daughter? The guy playing the upcoming rapper who joins Conner on tour is also kind of a miss, since they don't really poke fun at how stupid rappers have become either, which was weird considering some of the other parodies here. They did more with Alpa Cino in Tropic Thunder.

It's a good movie though, I'm probably highlighting some knocks against it more than I should but that's just because I'm so humble, it's just that I'd just be linking youtube videos of the soundtrack instead. It's definitely the kind of movie that didn't deserve to bomb since it's hella better than Zoolander 2 or Neighbors 2 or The Do-Over. It's nowhere in the same league as Spinal Tap, and maybe it might have been better to have seen how it went as a skit/digital shorts for a few seasons on SNL before making a movie sort of like Wayne's World, but it will likely get cult status on DVD because there is a lot to like with it or meme it, outside of the songs. It's definitely a rental on iTunes or VOD.

I saw the original Independence Day on HBOGO over the weekend and watched it again having not seen it since theatrical release.

I actually still kind of really enjoyed it. I'm not entirely sure why, but it was entertaining enough that my original intent was to turn it on to watch while casually chopping up all my fruits and vegetables for the week and I ended out just standing there with a knife in my hand staring at the TV for long periods of time.

Not to answer for Preacher, but the fact that the films advertising seems co-sponsored by the United States Air Force is weird.

And that, at least as of a month ago, the film website had a link to a recruitment page for the USAF.

If the US Military wants to sponsor your movie you're probably doing something wrong.

They fact that they pulled out of their deal with Marvel because Joss Whedon's Avengers script made them uncomfortable is a big point in The Avengers' favor:
The Pentagon halted its cooperation with Marvel Studios’ blockbuster movie The Avengers...“We couldn’t reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it,” Phil Strub, the Defense Department’s Hollywood liaison, tells Danger Room. “To whom did S.H.I.E.L.D. answer? Did we work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn’t do anything” with the film.
    https://www.wired.com/2012/05/avengers-military/

(my reading: the film's portrayal of its fictional military organization as shadowy, sinister, and willing to bomb innocent civilians at the drop of a hat hit a littttle too close to home)

    Dredd 2 is on!

    http://sciencefiction.com/2016/06/20/denver-comic-con-2016-karl-urban-confirms-judge-dredd-2/
At his panel at Denver Comic Con, when asked a rather snidely worded question about if he would do a sequel to ‘Dredd’ even if it was poorly written just for the money, Karl Urban revealed some very interesting information for fans.

Well, after he quipped that he did need a new house, he revealed the information:

Yes. ‘Dredd 2′ is in development.

You heard that right. Or at least, they are developing the story for it. After that, they are determining the right platform, be it Netflix, Amazon, a TV Series, or another movie.

‘Dredd’ was a movie made in 2012 starring Urban about a character who acts as judge, jury and executioner in a future dystopian megacity. It also features Lena Headey (Cersei, ‘Game of Thrones) as the antagonist, a drug lord named Ma-Ma. It is currently rated “fresh” on rotten tomatoes.

The issue is, Urban explained, is that there had been no awareness for ‘Dredd‘ when it came out. Making a sequel to the film is an uphill battle because the movie did not do great at the box office, so a sequel was sort of written off. However, once people knew about it, the DVD sales went through the roof which proved there was an audience for it. It just had to be reached.

Urban added that there is an interest from established creatives and that he would do the sequel if he felt it had depth and substance.

Either a movie or Netflix would be ok with me.

    Dredd was fantastic.

Dredd, John Wick and The Losers are the three most notable action films I've seen in the last 5 years. Dredd was such an awesome surprise, especially the ma-ma gang and them saying fuck pg-13.

...and I had to go watch the elevator scene from The Losers as is customary when I remember I like the movie.

Edit: The military has traditionally cooperated quite often with movie makers when it came to filming things like aircraft and carriers and such, because it meant they could use that as leverage to ensure that the armed forces were always the good guys in the story. With the advent of CGI and budgets getting big enough that film crews can literally rent a squadron of jets for close ups and computer in the rest the military is losing it's grip on things and doesn't really know what to do.
edit: We need Olivia Thirlby back for Anderson!
    Olivia looks ready.

Edit2: I'm going to dream that Netflix is making a show now with the full cast from the movie and be very disappointed in the morning. I also had to watch all the slowmo scenes from Dredd, very well done.

I hope that Alex Garland will be on the project again - perhaps as writer-director? While he sometimes has a problem coming up with good endings, I usually like his writing a lot.

I liked a lot about The Babadook, but the creature was the least engaging part

    just kinda blah and derivative

The actual creature is the least engaging part of pretty much every monster horror movie ever made, except for Alien and The Thing.

And even Alien is a lot more effective when you just see glimpses. That's just how horror works. What you see is always inferior to what you imagine you might see.

It Follows did pretty well, I think.
The film played with the "Anyone could be It" thing to build tension, and even got a pretty good joke out of the buildup.
