[x] Pre-PAX Boardgame Night (official)

LexiconGrrlLexiconGrrl Registered User regular
edited August 2016 in PAX West
Confirmation has been received from the Seattle Sheraton that the Pre-Pax ("Paxmas Eve") boardgame night is on for 2016 in Seattle.

WHAT: A coordinated meetup the night before PAX for anyone with board games, or anyone who wants to play boardgames.
This is the Original Pre-PAX Boardgame night. The one that inspired all others. The one that you stumble drunkenly across on your way back to your room.

WHERE: The 2nd Floor of the Seattle Sheraton Hotel: 1400 6th Ave.

p9pb1pv74o3o.jpg

WHEN: Thursday September 1 @ 4:00 PM until late, late, late. How late? You decide!

This event is ALL AGES!! It's also FREE! And there are NO SIGNUPS!!! Just show up and have a great time. Feel free to bring your spawn, but remember that PAXers have filthy, filthy mouths and your wee ones may be subject to some exciting new vocabulary.

All games are brought by the attendees and shared; there is no game library provided so if you're bringing games, grab a couple extras to lend out. Got no game? No problem! You can borrow someone's game.

DEETS:
-500 seats in and around Grand Ballroom B on the 2nd floor.
-The ballroom will be open until midnight. Games will need to be moved to the downstairs lobbies at that time.
-There will be a bar upstairs, by the gaming area. You're also welcome to order food/booze and bring it up from the restaurant/bar downstairs. There will not be table service.
-This event is not paid for, endorsed by, or affiliated with Official Penny Arcade. It is a community-run event.

THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE: Buy your food and drinks from the hotel. No outside food. It's how we "pay" for this event that they give us for free.

THE OTHER RULES
- This is important enough to list twice: The hotel gives us this space for free: they don't owe us this event. In return we give them a good bar and restaurant take. Please make every effort to purchase food and/or drink from the hotel. Takeout pizza or outside food is discouraged in the strongest possible terms, and I will be asking people who have food to take it elsewhere. If your budget is tight and you can't afford hotel food, please eat before or go to your room to eat. Thank you in advance for understanding how this whole free-game-night-barter-system-politics thing works.

- Because of fire code restrictions, please game in the designated areas instead of in the hotel lobbies. If you see people gaming in the lobbies, roll a knowledge check to see if they know there's a designated gaming area. Gaming in the bar and restaurant is fine as long as you're not tablesquatting (ie: make sure you continue to order as if the table is turning each hour). Note that the hotel security staff may be policing the downstairs main lobby and asking people to move upstairs so that the non-PAX guests can use the downstairs lobby.

- Please don't be an egregious douchebag. For example, one year some guy decided it would be a great idea to smoke a vape in the ballroom and the hotel manager came and had an unpleasant chat with me about it. This isn't your buddy's garage man cave, please act appropriately. We pride ourselves on being a responsible, self-policing community, so if you see someone acting inappropriately (eating takeout food, smoking, vandalizing or just being a dick), it's a good idea to nicely recommend they knock it the fuck off before management does.

- Be Excellent to each other. We freaks and geeks can be a socially maladroit group, so if someone is shyly lurking by your table, invite them to join. Be patient, be nice. Please don't flip your table.

- On an historical note, the hotel is already on board, and this year is looking much easier than last year in terms of planning and confirmation. Huzzah!

- Lastly, do not anger LexiconGrrl by breaking the rules. We have worked hard for this event, don't piss on it. There is an excellent possibility that I may be exhausted, half-drunk, and resentful about missing PAX so if I have to intervene between you and the hotel I will ensure that Game Night is the most memorable part of your PAX experience, along with everyone else within a 5 table radius.

HOW IT WORKS on the thread
1. If you have games to bring, please post what you're bringing.
2. If you're looking to play a specific game, please post your request.

HOW IT WORKS at the Hotel
1. Your coordinator for the night is LexiconGrrl. You can find her at the Info table with the Cookie Brigade if you have any questions.
2. If you've got a game and are looking for players, put the box top of the game vertically on your table. This is the universal sign for "I don't care who you are, please join us"
3. If you're looking to join a game, look for vertical box tops.
4. We will have a hosted checkout system at the info table. You can drop off games to loan or borrow games there. If you're dropping off, I recommend doing this:

Looking forward to attending this event for the first time since I'm staying in Seattle for the weekend instead of commuting up each day.

A huge thank you to @LexiconGrrl for setting this up, as always. I plan on attending, and will be bringing a selection of games up with me. If anyone has any requests from my collection, I can certainly see about including them.

We have a not-unsubstantial game collection, and since I'm in Seattle and it's easy for me to pack in and out, will probably bring a big stack of games for lending.

and i usually bring quite a bit (1-2 suitecases) but space may be limited this year. I know I'll have my Munchkin/Steve Jackson Games collection for obvious reasons LOL :)

I'm signed up for the Triwizard but may try to bail out early to play some games. It's my intention to try and bring the excellent boutique game Kingdom Death: Monster with me so people can try it out. More info here: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/55690/kingdom-death-monster

Speaking of, do you want us to bring any specific games? I have CaH (with a bunch of expansions), and exploding Kittens.

Bring whatever you like. We end up with about 500 people, so there's plenty of players and plenty of options.

Huh, there haven't been any posts on this for the last week? Odd. Anyway hi! ReploidArmada here again. I've picked up another set of board games, and I'll be happy to show them off! Here's my tentative list for this year:

    Android: Infiltration
Betrayal at House on the Hill
Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre
    Love Letter, Kanai Factory ed.
    Millennium Blades
    Nuclear War
Race for the Galaxy, +2 expansions

I'm really excited to play Millennium Blades in a group exclusively filled with gamer geeks. Some of my friends took to it well, other friends didn't, but it's very much a game designed for gamers, especially CCG gamers. It's really a swell game :)

Will anyone be running a Game of Thrones or BattleStar Galactica game? I only marginally know how to play, and have been unsuccessful in years past with stumbling upon one I could join. Would love to secure a seat, and have 2 more players coming with me if we need more.

@Redwingedblackbird can usually be relied upon to run a BSG game. RWBB- confirm or deny?

I might be able to run a game of BSG, if someone has a copy there (I'm not lugging our copy down - I need room to bring stuff home!).

While things could change, we're currently planning to attend this event. I don't think we'll be bringing many games with us, maybe 1 or 2 normal sized games and a few small ones.

Just found out about this, sounds like a blast!

I'll probably bring Sentinels of the Multiverse, Millennium Blades, and Sushi Go. I may also do XCom and a few others if I feel ambitious enough to complicate the bus home.

I was thinking of a "create your 5th Edition D&D Character for play at PAX" station, allowing a person to create a 1st level character with the options in the free rules, so they did not have to pick up a pregen to play at PAX. Do you think anyone would be interested?

I know may be being a bit cheeky here but I would like to play Scythe. I do have my own copy but it is rather heavy and I'd rather not drag it 6,000 miles across the Atlantic and the North American continent.

Woot woot, @LexiconGrrl!! These events are always a blast! Thanks a bunch!

My [official] tentative list for this shindig:
    - Twilight Imperium (w/ Shattered Empires)
    - Roll for the Galaxy
    - Colt Express (w/ Horses & Stagecoach)
    - Dice City
    - Evolution
    - Takenoko
    - The Resistance
    - Minecraft: Card Game[?]
    - Star Realms (w/ Colony Wars)
    - Epic

I know it's already going to pain me to not bring X-Wing, but I've got plenty of other games that I've wanted to play again and I may, potentially, want to try out some others as well.

I will be there after the Pre-PAX Dinner with my copy of The Resistance. Don't get to play this very often with my game group, and what better way to make new friends than by calling them liars and saboteurs? If someone has the expansions, I'd love to give those a try too.

Ok, I'm bringing the hottest game of 2016 (i think). CAPTAIN SONAR.

Now, I'm making this post mostly to get some help getting a good spot for this, because I KNOW that people really want to try this game out. Any way I could get a table possibly out front or just somewhere close to some enforcers for security, I plan to go around and play other games and just don't want to get my stuff stolen.

Since this is a community event, and not an official PAX event, it isn't staffed by enforcers.

We're coming up from Portland and will be bringing a host of games, which we've previously had no problems lending out for this. Do what you're comfy with, but we have our contact info in the game boxes and for most events like this, we get an ID and contact number for 'check out.' Game collection here for requests!

    Much excite. Very games.
