With flashy lights and lasers increasingly the norm at concerts, a New York promoter is trying a new effect to bring the focus back to the music -- darkness.
In an experiment Friday night, more than 300 electronic music fans surrendered their smartphones to dance in a light-sealed room as their senses recalibrated to the audio.
After an initial hour of moderate lighting while a DJ warmed up the crowd with dance-friendly house music, the stage turned black except for a single light-bulb during the main set by Eprom, whose tracks are heavy on bass yet experimental with quirky melodic riffs.
"We want people to be less distracted by shiny objects and more focused on what the actual product is. A concert is all about the music," said Jay Rogovin, executive adviser of the Good Looks Collective entertainment agency, which put on the inaugural "LightsOut" show.
Hoping to startle the senses further, the LightsOut show -- which took place at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn -- jarringly flashed red strobe lights at several points to remind the crowd of the darkness.
The setting appeared to loosen inhibitions, with a number of club-goers throwing their arms in the air with a joyful abandon that may have otherwise been hampered by self-consciousness.
- No phones, please -
As proof of how difficult the zero-distraction concept can be, at least one person smuggled in a phone and, as is commonplace at shows, spent the night constantly messaging friends.
Fans were asked upon arrival to deposit their phones in pouches developed by the start-up firm Yondr.
Although they were allowed to keep the phones, the devices remained locked inside until they exited, when the staff opened the bags using technology similar to the security tags at department stores.
This is super rad! I'd totally go to something like this.
This line however:

Seems really silly.
That's quite an assumption to make. Especially since it says "may have". Why even include that? Most EDM shows I go to people are losing their minds. It's kinda one of the reasons people go to such events!
The new Ferry Corsten is not my cup of tea. The music is bogged down by a non-musical narrative about an inventor and his waifu-bot which sounds like the prequel to Sad Machine. Gotta take lessons from Porter, or even Mastodon and Blind Guardian if you're going to make a concept album!
EDIT - Oh god the conclusion is literally Fellow Feeling.

Yeah he played bunch of his new stuff at Dreamstate, i found it pretty disappointing.

I kept wanting Love Interest Bot, AKA Vee, to shout "I'm not yours to lose!" but it never happened.
My wristband finally arrived. It's official, I'm going to my first festival of the year. Now to lose a few pounds, up my cardio & finalize my festival garb.
No Griz this year, no Polish Ambassador either, which is a bummer, as both shows were fantastic last year. Hoped to see Alison Wonderland and Flume, but alas, they arrive second weekend.

I found his guest mix on ABGT very nice to listen to, which contains a lot of the new tracks I believe:

Yup, can't wait to see them live, along with several others on that list (like String Cheese). In fact, I feel that the live experience for most EDM groups is so dramatically better that I rarely listen to EDM at home anymore - to reproduce the kind of bass that you feel, rather than hear, in a home setting in order to faithfully reproduce the music would result in noise complaints from all my neighbors.

@hsu Yeah, Polish puts on a great show. His recent albums are a diversion from his older style, more groovy and less glitchy and clearly his girlfriend (Alya Nereo) has been a positive influence on him, but his live sets still throw down.
Of that list, I'd like to see String Cheese, A-Trak, Bob Moses, Claude VonStroke, DJ EZ, Maya Jane Coles, and Opiuo.
Dixon's Violin, Lettuce, Ott, Papadosio, Phutureprimitive, and Trevor Hall all put on great shows.
I'd probably swing through Bassnectar for a few minutes.
Odesza is fun but their material is samey and there isn't much of it.

Went for a day trip to Firefly so I could see Galantis.
Absolutely fabulous. They put on a real good show and did some cool remixes of their songs. Real good energy.
Here's me and the my festival going crew in a hammock!
Had a blast! (yes that is a Princess Mononoke shirt, gotta rep the weeb pride)
So I was wondering if anyone can recommend any artists similar to Solar Fields for me. His stuff has proven to be perfect music to have as a backdrop to work.
Some of his stuff in spoilers if people aren't familiar with him.
I have (almost) all of his stuff at this point and until he's finished his next album I'm itching for something new. I've found some others like Carbon Based Lifeforms and Aes Dana, but I'm curious to see what else is out there.
@MortifiedPenguin I was literally just listening to something that sounded like Solar Fields and was going to post it... only to find out that it was Solar Fields. Whoops!
My friends took me to a Caravan Palace concert. Where has this team been all my life. Drop what you're doing and hear this shit https://youtu.be/UbQgXeY_zi4
And even better live.

If that track is what he's talking about that's actually pretty funny.
I mean, yeah, for some live songs they turn the lights down low, the singer and instrumentalists go off stage and its just the DJ, but 90% of it was this.
People were dancing in the balconies. I'm not talking about jumping up and down. They were dance dancing.
too smart for you?? i him and his essential mixes are great
i went to a a fun techno thing 4th july weekend, marcel dettman, richie hawtin, maceo plex, rodhad, maya jane coles, chris liebing, speedy j - very fun
I like Umfang's new album a lot
this new Recondite EP is great, would recommend
here are some mixes i've enjoyed lately

Went to this show in Tokyo over the weekend.
Sapphire Slows was crazy awesome. At least partly due to the most amazing laser/light show I've ever seen in my life.
DJ Nobu was also super legit. Plus he complimented my tattoos so that makes him extra cool in my book.
Blast from the past time. I remember these guys in high school, and they're apparently coming back after being gone for 23 years. Which is REALLY strange, but really awesome at the same time.

It looks like they're doing (did) a tiny book tour, if anything:

Along with Migos and Kaskade.
This lineup is pretty nuts.

Haven't listened to the album yet.
In other news I am heading to ABGT250. (Yes, I am an Above & Beyond nut.) Anyone here attending?
Yoooo Bassnectar and Nero are both AMAZING live.

hold tight the crew
This particular song sounds Skinny Puppy as heck, both in style and the whole animal rights theme. And the singer does his darndest to be Ogre.

https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/music/the-klf-return-with-a-three-day-blitz-of-liverpool-1.3200821
Some of their original tracks still hold up, though they're definitely of their time:

Some not so much:

And it's still not quite clear why they burned all that money.
I only recognize:
A&B
Claude von stroke (and i really only know him from a few remixes)
Oliver Heldens
Matisyahu
Am i that much out of the loop or are these all American and not very big outside of US?
