Pardon me, are you a Phalla player, sir? That depends. Who's asking?Oh, sure. Sir, I'm WACriminal, I'm at your service, sir. I have been looking for you.I'm getting nervous!Sir, I heard your name at CF, I was seeking my own little game of Phalla, when I got sort of obsessed with an Alex of ours. I always sing it in my car, sir. He handled our financials?...well let's confer, sir.
This is Phalla, Penny Arcade Forums' version of the traditional party game, Mafia. General rules can be found here:
http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/99170/cf-phalla-signup-list/p1
Unless otherwise noted, expect standard Phalla rules to apply -- the red vote eliminates a player every day, role PMs are reliable, don't screenshot things, etc.
This game is themed around Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton: An American Musical". Knowledge of the source material is not necessary to enjoy the game, but (as with most themed games) may be helpful to speculation. This is a
faction game with a mafia element. In addition, there is a
dueling mechanic.
Activity Requirements:
You should do at least one of the following every day:
Vote
in bold red for a player to eliminate from the game
Make 2 posts
Use a special ability
If you don't do any of those things for 2 days in a row, you'll be removed from the game (and hopefully replaced by a reserve).
Clarifications:
Why should a tiny island across the sea regulate the price of tea?
Alexander,
please.
When is vote close?
10 PM CST. I know it's a bit of a strange close time, but it's when my shift ends, so I can dedicate my full attention to churning out the results/narration.
Order of actions?
??? --> Duel --> ??? --> Vote --> ??? --> Guard --> Mafia Kill --> Other Kills --> Other Stuff
Do note that the presence of "???" does not
necessarily indicate that anything is happening during that phase, only that it
could.
Say, that's twice you've mentioned the dueling now. How does dueling work? They don't exactly cover this subject in boarding school.
True, true. Here are
The Ten Duel Commandments.
:whistle:One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine
It's the ten duel commandments
Number one!
The challenge: demand satisfaction
If they apologize, no need for further action:whistle:
Every day, two players will be selected to duel each other.
:whistle:Number two!
If they don't, grab a friend, that's your second
Your Lieutenant, when there's reckoning to be reckoned:whistle:
In addition, each of the Duelists will be assigned a Second from among the other players.
:whistle:Number three!
Have your seconds meet face to face
Negotiate a peace
Or negotiate a time and place
This is commonplace, specially ‘tween recruits
Most disputes die and no one shoots:whistle:
Duelists and Seconds must each submit their orders by vote close. They are welcome to discuss their decisions with each other and with other players, either publicly or privately, but normal secrecy rules still apply. Duelists are especially encouraged, but not required, to discuss the matter with their Seconds.
:whistle:Number four!
If they don't reach a peace, that's alright
Time to get some pistols and a doctor on site
You pay him in advance, you treat him with civility
You have him turn around, so he can have deniability:whistle:
Elimination via duel cannot be guarded against or prevented. No doctor, guard, or bus-driver can save you.
:whistle:Five!
Duel before the sun is in the sky
Pick a place to die where it's high and dry:whistle:
Duels are resolved early in the order of actions -- before the vote, even. As a result, a player who dies in the duel is not counted in that day’s vote tally and takes no actions that day.
:whistle:Number six!
Leave a note for your next of kin
Tell ‘em where you been
Pray that Hell or Heaven lets you in:whistle:
When submitting their orders for the duel, both Duelists and Seconds may include a note to be published in the event of their death. This note is published only if their death is a result of that specific duel, and not if their death is a result of some other cause (such as the vote).
:whistle:Seven!
Confess your sins
Ready for the moment of adrenaline
When you finally face your opponent:whistle:
All duel orders that impact the outcome will be made public. Everyone will know whether you threw away your shot or demanded satisfaction.
:whistle:Number eight!
Your last chance to negotiate
Send in your seconds
See if they can set the record straight:whistle:
No conditional duel orders will be accepted from either Duelists or Seconds. You must choose.
:whistle:Number nine!
Look him in the eye, aim no higher
Summon all the courage you require:whistle:
Duelists may choose from the following orders:
1. Defer To Second -- You choose not to participate in the duel, and your Second takes your place. If you do this, you are proclaimed a coward and neither your vote nor any of your non-duel actions will be counted that day.
2. Throw Away Your Shot -- You participate in the duel, but make no attempt to kill your opponent.
3. FIRE! -- You attempt to kill your opponent (or their Second, if they Deferred). If they choose to Throw Away Their Shot, they are eliminated from the game. If they chose to FIRE!, a coin will be flipped and the loser will be eliminated.
Seconds must choose between Throw Away Your Shot and FIRE! They are not allowed to Defer. However, their order is only revealed in narration if their Duelist chose to Defer. Otherwise, as it does not impact the outcome of the duel, it will remain secret.
For both Duelists and Seconds, failure to submit orders before vote close will be automatically processed as though they had chosen to Throw Away Their Shot.
:whistle:Then count
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine
Number Ten paces! Fire!
Eliminations resulting from the duel will be posted immediately at vote close, or as close as I am able. Narration, along with a more detailed breakdown of the duel’s events, will follow after further processing. If you are eliminated via duel, you can no longer post (with the exception of your one ghost-post, subject to the usual rules regarding game-impacting information), even if the full narration has not yet been posted.
Sample Villager PM:
You are...Peggy!
Your alignment is Revolutionary.
Your faction alignment is Federalist.

Someone sing the song.
Every now and then
The country
Goes a little wrong.
Every now and then
A madman's
Bound to come along.
Doesn't stop the story-
Story's pretty strong.
Doesn't change the song...
That would be enough
Someday, someday.

No sir, this is a civilized sort of violence. With rules and gentlemanly insults and long papers on the nature of ethics and such before the dying. Good day sir!
I never used it anyway.
What is the list of all the factions? I notice your vanilla role doesn't contain a list and wonder if all the mafia would have to cover as either Federalists or Southern Motherfuckin Democratic Republicans.
A COMPELLING ARGUMENT, HOWEVER, I MUST DISAGREE.
AS A COUNTER ARGUMENT, I PROPOSE THAT INSTEAD I EMPTY A PISTOL INTO YOUR STILL CORPSE AT POINT BLANK.

Isn't that a bit superfluous at that point?

See, this is the problem with public schools. If they were doing their job properly, there would be nothing to spoil.
(See, this is the problem with Americans, they assume everyone learned about America's history in school.)

Also curious about how duelists and seconds are selected
And I guess I'll do the thing
Jesus Christ, this will be fun!
Its difficult to quantify the success of an art, but my understanding is that is an exceptionally well produced musical, using common R&B/hip hop influences, about American history, showing in America. This means normal theatre nerds tend to like, R&B/hip hop fans tend to like, and patriots tend to like it.

EDIT: That's not being snippy or anything. I like other songs more, but the first song is a really great representation of the rest of the musical.

And you can find a link to the full lyrics on genius, complete with annotations.
It's got exceptional lyrics.
I mean, the phrase "manumission revolutionary abolitionists" shows up in the first few songs. And that's only an example of the kind of vocabulary.
The writing is astounding, the music catchy, the story dramatic, and the cast is astounding. It's worth at least one listen through.

I don't know, they definitely avoided displaying the fact, but I feel like his obsession with moving upward sort of alludes to it.
