I thought I'd give this a shot last night because I had a tiny tiny bit of free time before bed after finishing some work and I got in, and the planet is a toxic dump. But I remembered how to play from back at release and made me way through the setup and repair of the ship and got it up and running (stuff is a bit different for that) and then I jet off the planet because seriously it's that bad.
It has a moon! This one is a literal radiation wasteland.
Okay well there's one other planet in the system.
Radiation as well.
Welp. So I redid it and got the same just in reverse with the toxin/radiation and a few moons that were also radiation.
Maybe I'll try again tonight if I get some more free time and see if I can't start on a halfway decent planet and get a base set up.

I played a bit of this. Started on a planet with constant acid rain, and when I was making my way to a mineral deposit so I could repair my ship, an acid STORM started so I had to dash between deposits of sodium, desperately trying to keep my environmental protection up long enough so I didn't melt into goo.
I have to say that the game seems massively improved from when I first played it, and I didn't even play it at the very beginning when the game was really rough.
I had a hell of an adventure playing today.
I started on an ice planet I had just landed on in my 2nd system as part of the tutorial stuff, nothing too major except for these good boys:
and some cool floating rocks that I didn't get shots of.
I found a Gek plaque, which led me to a ruin on a nearby moon. It was some tonal whiplash, going from a snowy rocky planet to:
Of course, there were some Gravitino Balls, so I grabbed those, had to hightail it from the cops but I eventually made my way back and went looking for the hidden treasure it mentioned. I dug up a bunch of keys, before finding a giant crate underground that had...
holy shit
So yeah, it was worth my time. Despite being a radioactive desert covered in nothing but living tentacle plants, mushrooms, cops, and this guy
it was a fun adventure. The radiation isn't even constant so who knows, I might put up a house here somewhere.

My starter system was wall to wall ice holes so it does seem like they do it to guide you to getting the warp drive up to hop solar systems. Might be worth roughing it out and then looking for better planets.

It wouldn't be so bad if those planets didn't drain my life support every 30 seconds.

I got a flight overhaul mod for laughs. It makes the ships fly way more precisely and tight. But maybe to well. Also going real slow and reverse. Took it out though since it felt like too much cheating.

So I basically live at a trade outpost now. I landed at it to talk to some mission Gek and ran past some ships. Then one took off. It was one of the larger haler style but it had fucking awesome looking big vector engines on each wing that looked like ones on a SHIELD Helicarrier. They were animated and everything.
I've been sitting here waiting to see if it comes back so I can buy it. No luck so far. A S-Class, one of the big ball one with the flip open wings landed but was out of my price range.
Also I bought a 26 slot ship off a guy in a space station and every one here is 18-19.

Oh god, I am so irritated right now. First, let me do the quick version of the very happy post I had been planning to make.
I had figured that I would have to hop around a few systems and scour planets before finding somewhere nice to set up a base. But I happened to find a great spot in the very first system I warped to. I was actually considering warping out but decided to go ahead and check the planet out. And I love it. It's got nice beaches, a temperate climate, lots of plants and animals, passive sentinels, and the system itself is peaceful and economically "comfortable." It's also dotted with knowledge stones.
So last night I parked my ship near a beach, and built a new portable refiner to start making the components for another base. Then I went and mined a bunch of copper and went back to my ship. I hopped in and out of it to trigger a save, and then paused the game via the Options/Discovery menu, so that I could jump right back in and get to building when I got home from work today.
Which brings us to now.
I get home from work and unpause the game to find that my ship appears to be in a completely different spot on the planet, and also looks like it was in a wreck. Also, I died. Three times apparently, judging from the "Generation Four" that appeared on my screen. My inventory is gone. There is a grave marker nearby, but it restores nothing -- I'm guessing because I had nothing on me the latter two times that I died and only the most recent inventory is kept.
I tried scanning for my portable refiner and do not see it anywhere. My only theory, outside of straight up glitchcraft, is that maybe another player popped into my system and unpaused me. That would theoretically explain the deaths, as I was standing outside my ship and thus my life support was draining. But why my ship, which was parked, seems to have wrecked in a completely different spot, I don't know. Unless I actually got attacked. Can your ship even be attacked when you aren't in it? I guess I could have gotten back in and forgotten, but either way...

Finally craft an AtlasPass v1 for the first time and a Sentinal comes along as I'm mining for starship fuel components, I managed to boost and I guess bump it or something? Not sure but it immediately went into attack mode, nowhere near my ship. Sigh.

it goes without saying but all sentinels are bastards.
I'm guessing you've checked the previous saves to see if one was far back enough to reload? I think the game keeps the last three or something in one of the menus somewhere.

Must be a bug
I don't want them to fix it because it freaks out my cats every time and it's very amusing.

Hell i’m still trying to find a place that’s at all suitable for a home base
I liked no man’s sky from the beginning, but how they shipped a space ship game where you couldn’t skim the planet’s surface is a true mystery

Okay! Maybe the other planets are cool!

...should I start playing again?
do you like space games mixed with minecraft collection?
It is a demonstrably better game now, so yes.
It's still essentially the same loop, but they added a ton of shit that turned it into an actual game instead of a neat idea.
Switch to third person first.

Those turbofan looking things spin! Give me this ship!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT HAS HOW MANY SLOTS
Jesus Christ do I not have enough money.

That thing is a good distance away. It is on the other side of that hill, not on top of it, so they are god damn huge.
Fuck the space police
You can do this with Korvax as well.
