Maybe it's because I'm only... 32? But the concept of having stacks of Aetherflow is kinda foreign to me. I'm guessing it'll make more sense once I get higher in level and unlock more abilities.
Arcanist/Scholar/Summoner really start to feel complete once you hit 40 and get the "Aetherdam 3" trait, which gives you 3 stacks of Aetherflow each time you use it and allows you to use Bane/Energy Drain/Fester (Summoner gets Fester at 35) 3 times every minute. Your pets also get a new skill at 40, so you get to do a lot more than just apply dots, spam ruin.
Also, learn how to manage your pet on obey and remember that you can bind pet skills to your hotbar. Ifrit and Titan can sometimes do fine on sic, but once you get Garuda (lvl 45) she pretty much has to be on Obey or she'll just blow all her skills at the worst possible time. I'd suggest binding Obey, Heel, and Place to your hotbar as well. Spam the Obey key whenever you switch targets to make your pet automatically attack your new target, and use Heel and Place to guide them out of AOEs/position them so that their own AOEs hit the most possible targets (at level 50 you get a pet "ultimate" skill that is basically a giant bomb). I bind Heel/Place to the two side buttons on my mouse; it makes it easy for me to move them around since I don't have to think at all or reach to hit a key with my left hand.
Note that I have no idea how I'd do any of this on a controller; I assume that anyone who plays this game on a controller is a wizard and much better than me.
I've been using the Yokai fates to try and get into the habit of actually using Spur/Rouse/Enkindle (on controller so cross-hotbar for the win) but yea Obey is mandatory for Garuda-Egi or she'll just burn Contagion while you're still casting Miasma all "I'm helping!!1!1" Less of an issue once you learn Tri-Disaster but still.
I'll probably never be able to do pet placement in the heat of battle beyond maybe spamming Heel during an invulnerability phase though

Yeah, I think pet placement is both easier and more important for a Scholar than Summoner. On Scholar I'm already mainly focusing on the battlefield anyways so it's easier to keep Eos somewhere near the tank and maybe move her around a bit when you need Whispering Dawn/Fey Covenant to hit everyone (just clicking heel and running to the center before casting usually works). Whereas on Summoner I get major tunnel vision and have to press all of the buttons gotta hit those buttons oh my god Garuda how are you nearly dead what is happening.
I need to work on my MP management, though. I still somehow find myself running dry on occasion when I cast Ruin III exclusively. Either I need to use Energy Drain more often, I need to rethink my timing of Aetherflow, or I need to look into what the right ratio of Ruin III to Ruin is.
Try to not use Energy Drain. Especially if you burnt your MP using Ruin III to get to the point you need the MP.
The MP difference between Ruin and Ruin III is around 880MP, which coincidentally is about the same amount of MP you'll get from an energy drain. You get 120 potency more for a Ruin III over a Ruin, but there's a 150 potency gap between Energy Drain and Fester.
Hence, do not Ruin III + Energy Drain under normal situations.
"Gilded chains of harmony" is such a great/terrifying line.
So...on summoners.
Summoner is pretty great. I'm having a lot more fun with it than when I ran BLM. It's practically invigorated my interest in the game completely. It's officially my new main.
So I could use some expert advice! I've just reached the Reconditioned part of the Anima weapon quest, and I'd really appreciate advice on where I should allocate the stats.

For SMN, I think the optimal stats for that are Crit > Det > last few points in SS? I hope so anyway since that's what I did.

Got it. So, instead, use Ruin if I need to go into MP recharge mode, and always go for Fester.
As a relative newcomer, I never played during the 1.0 days.
In the intro movie, it shows the Warriors of Light appear in a forest after being saved from Bahamut, then they call their Chocobos and run through a grassy mountainous area.
I could never figure out where this grassy area was supposed to be since it didn't completely match any area I was particularly familiar with in 2.0. Turns out it's because it's a 1.0 area that isn't in 2.0.
Or rather, it isn't in 2.0 in that form. It turns out it's Coerthas.
Is there some lore explanation for Coerthas becoming the land of ice and snow or was it a retcon? Or do we conveniently only visit it during the winter in the current game?
I guess the Warriors of Light must have been running through one of the three Coerthas zones that never made it into the current game. Perhaps the two Coerthas Lowland zones would still be green?
I wonder if those zones will ever make it back into the game? It seems like Heavensward would have been the best opportunity to do that, but they didn't.

Det and Spell Speed actually have virtually the same effect on DoT scaling. Which I found to be rather interesting.
So what would it mean to go for Spell Speed over Det? (Crit is a no brainer)
Trance is a 15s duration. You'll normally get 6 casts in there with a 2.5s GCD. But that leaves zero room for error. Hence, get some spell speed. Just a little bit at the very least so you have a faster than 2.5s GCD.
To get 7 casts in Trance, you'll need a GCD of around 2.1. This is impossible without buffs. Not even BLMs have that much spell speed natively.
A rough damage breakdown would be the following:
135 potency every 3s in ticking DoTs or ~2700 potency a minute
10 casts spent in reapplying DoTs over 1 minute
24 casts in 1 minute so 14 filler GCDs. At minimum, 1840 potency/min from those with Ruin I plus the 6 Ruin IIIs in Trance.
1300 potency per minute in instants (3x Fester + Deathflare)
This doesn't count the pet which has weird stat scaling. So we can see that about half (~46%) a SMN's damage will be affected by spell speed. So det will win out by a little bit all things being equal. knowing the effects of Trance on damage, it'll probably push the DoT contribution a bit lower since all those instants and all six Ruin IIIs will be in trance.
edit: These are extremely rough numbers and only serve as an indication of where the damage distribution lies. A key difference between SMNs and BLMs when looking at Spell Speed is that gaining an extra filler cast for a SMN would be worth ~80 potency each. With a decent amount of spell speed, you're looking at maybe an extra 160-240 potency in the filler category from 2-3 extra casts, which would be a ~4% potency/min improvement. Spell Speed has no effect on the oGCDs, which form at least 20% of the damage makeup.
Plus, Ruin II (remember that one?) is the same potency as the standard Ruin filler. So being forced to cancel a cast is virtually inconsequential to a SMN versus a BLM who'll be cursing like a sailor at being forced to cancel a ~500 potency Fire IV cast, and then having to cast Fire I early and possibly dropping an entire Fire I/IV cast because of the Enochian timer.
In short, Crit > Det > SS but the difference between SS and Det are much smaller than they were in 2.x. No need to run screaming from SS and you'll want a little bit in any case just to make Trance less tight on your timing.

Actually, they're running through Eastern Thanalan (If you look, you can see the Burning Wall, a pretty major feature of the zone.) The Mark of the Keeper is in the South Shroud, near the border (and if you're a Legacy player, this is where you would start instead of entering into one of the three city-states.)

Ah, I'd forgotten about that small area of Thanalan. I'll have to go check it out in game, since I've barely been there so far.
Also, I thought I'd heard Legacy players appeared outside of the starting city of their selected class? Otherwise, it'd be weird for (as an example) Marauders to not be able to access Limsa Lominsa for their class quests until after they'd already reached level 15. Or do they start at 15 and skip ahead in the MSQ to the point where you unlock airships?
I've seen pics of some FFX outfits available to folks who are attending the events/streams. So far I've seen Tidus and Yuna.
And it made me realize what I would really want is Jecht's outfit, tattoo and all. If such a thing becomes available, someone let me know, please?
It's only going to be Tidus (male) / Yuna (female) as far as we know.
Still waiting for gear to be available to all genders. (I know they said something about them working on it bit by bit)

'Does this make me look like a pretty WHM princess' factors heavily into about 50% of my gear decisions.

For me it's more "Okay, that looks all right. But is it really any better than having no shirt and a tattoo?"
File under "random thoughts": While we're kind of on the FFX topic, a Blitzball Player "job" would be kind of awesome, I think. Ranged attacker using blitzballs, maybe with some melee/close range attacks usable while the ball is in flight or unavailable. Like, say, a Jecht Shot-type ability that's a strong ranged attack, but then you "lose" the blitzball for a while and have to get in close until you can "recover" the ball.
Limit break 3 would be "Blitz King", and be baseds on Jecht's EX Burst from Dissidia.
Giving the class a Meteor-like ability wouldn't be out of the question, either. (I loved the comparison someone made of the Dissidia characters- how many of them have a Meteor-type attack, but Jecht is the only one badass enough to actually physically catch and hurl one at you.)
Like Ultimate Jecht Shot, Blitz King is a meteor. But instead of throwing it, he kicks it once to shatter it into shards, and then again to launch all the shards at his target.
Yay, Final Steps of Faith Down, cutscenes watched, 3.4 trailer viewed, I'm finally caught up! Well, story wise at least, still working on gear of course.
Some overall HW and Dragonsong War thoughts in spoilers.
While I mostly enjoyed the HW story, I kind of wish we'd been viewing it from the perspective of anyone else besides Aymeric. There was so much potential there for a revolution of the oppressed type storyline, and once they introduced Hilda I really thought that's where the story was going to shift to: teaming up with the downtrodden masses to overthrow and reform the government and expose the years of lies. But no, instead we yet again make friends with the most powerful figure in the land, who just so happens to be a noble idealist who can barely do any wrong (and what wrong he does do is because he's just too good and noble, of course). I don't know, I just feel like if you're going to tease me with a tale of class warfare and have the end result of said story be the dismantling of an orthodox theocracy, telling that particular story from the point of view of the ultimate political insiders is a bit strange. Maybe I'm nit picking here, or maybe the election season just has me craving the blood of the rich and powerful, who knows. It's not like I dislike Aymeric or anything; it's just that I feel like they went the absolutely most boring route possible with his character. The grand melee in particular felt kind of hamfisted and dumb, even if it did lead to the best non-dungeon/trial/raid fight in the game with Raubahn.
Quick aside, the new Nanamo voice sucks; bring back bad posh accent Nanamo please.
Anyways, really looking forward to how things go from here, and just what the deal is with these Warrior of Darkness guys (They're from an alternate universe, right? Everyone agrees that they're probably from an alternate universe?), and just what in the fuck is going on with Minfilliadalen, and when we're gonna figure out what Yda's deal is (I saw someone suggest secret Ala Mhigo Princess?).
Also, shoutouts to the duty finder group that somehow didn't rage quit Final Steps of Faith when it took us 4 times to get past the add phase. It was a complete clusterfuck and people were getting hit by literally everything (I was not immune, the first time we got to the meteors and big line aoes I mistimed it and got hit by the bad), but we somehow managed to clear it with around 8 minutes left and no one leaving. I thought we were screwed when the last Akh Morn hit with only 5 people up, but we barely survived and clutched it out.

Sephirot is 205 and the cap before that was 210. She is probably going to be 230 or higher.
Mainly in finding a weapon that doesn't require me to do Anima or POTD because Seph and Nid EX aren't really DF able.
Lore weapon is 1000 lore + 4 A8 runs, then 1 VA + 1 WC for 240.
