So I got into the closed beta for "For Honor" which looked interesting but I figured wouldn't play well.
But HOLY CRAP this went from "meh" to "day 1 purchase" for me after a little time with the beta. Most fun melee dueling system I think I've played in a game.
The 5v5 matches I think I'll enjoy the most. They have 10 players plus an AI 'army' sort of like in Titanfall or MOBAs, along with point capturing. It gets pretty hectic and you form some pretty specifical rivalries again enemy players, which is fun.
I ended the night with some 2 on 2 battles which were a blast.
Here's a little sample of how it plays (I have a bad connection so it's a little chunky). I'd also been playing the knight and this was my first round with the samurai so I didn't know his moves well and was too aggressive and didn't block enough. But you can watch the viking I fought to see how some good defending can really change the playing field. https://www.twitch.tv/vamenn/v/89581344
Good stuff. Highly recommended to check out if the setting and that type of gameplay is up your alley at all. There are a lot of subtitles to the combat too (which are very much not shown in my playing) so I think it will be a pretty deep and satisfying multiplayer game.
$10 for the new Batman game. Did they ever sufficiently fix the PC port?
IIRC they just threw up their hands and walked away from it.
Looks like the last "patch" was a hotfix that increases freeflow combat speed based on consecutive critical strikes...back in March. Before that, there was a patch in January that fixed some of the issues for notebooks and enabled support of the new DLC pack. After those, though, the only news are two items from PC Gamer about how AK is still a buggy mess (albeit a "(kind of) fixed" mess) and how the port was such a dumpster fire that the original plan of enabling support for Linux and Mac was abandoned.
So yeah, throwing their hands in the air and walking away is an apt description.
I assume that the code must have been so shoddily ported that it would just never be fixable short of a major rewrite. Which they clearly didn't care about.
I have just accepted that I am never going to play it.

Lego Star Wars - the Force Awakens is on sale for 30% off...good enough for me!
PSA: Apparently there's a 50% off discount code for Origin. The code is "ORIGIN50". It apparently works on them funky Bioware points. Great time to get your ME DLC.
Heads up about this - the discount doesn't apply to Bioware points (or any other "virtual currency"). So yay to that.
It does work on the points - if you go in through the game to look at the additional content on the origin client and add it to your cart that way.
I might have just bought some Dragon Age II stuff that I've been really wanting since enjoying Origins so much, despite wanting not to spend money lately. Oops!
Anyway, it worked for me just a couple of minutes ago.
It worked for me that way too. Finally completed my Mass Effect 3 PC DLC collection for a price that, while still not cheap, was one I could actually stomach.
So I've now bought everything in that entire series twice - 360 and PC.

I am a Procrastinator (Yeah, I know that it's kinda similar to the already mentioned lazy bums)
The special ability of a procrastinator, the Dead Line, is a very risky maneuver. By using it, you chose X number of turns where you can't take any actions, relying entirely on your teammates to to cover for you, and then at the delay, release X-Y (where Y depends on your skill level) actions in a single flurry, with increased priority. That whirlwind of action is often enough to turn the tide of the battle, nuking entire squads of enemies...but until then you're playing a character down. And it's wasted effort if you finish the encounter before the delay is up. Again, double sided sword.
$10 for the new Batman game. Did they ever sufficiently fix the PC port?
It runs and that's about it. It's honestly not worth checking out unless you're a serious Batman whore and have already played the previous Rocksteady Arkham games, Shadow of Mordor, Sleeping Dogs, Mad Max, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. the design and gameplay is really uneven and even without the technical issues just doesn't stand out as much anymore.
Well, I've only messed around with Bioshock 1 a bit so far, mostly for setup. There's a bit of weirdness going on, particularly in the mouse settings. In general I've noticed lately that I've had to turn my sensitivity down in games lately, about half of where it was. I don't know if it's just been since the update to Windows 10 or after the Anniversary update or what, but whatever, most games have a plenty granular scale for adjusting mouse sensitivity.
Then there's Bioshock. The default sensitivity was 3 and was WAY too high, so I tried turning it all the way down to 1 (whole numbers only, so only two ticks), which made the in game sensitivity better, but made some really weird shit start happening with the mouse pointer on menus. Moving my mouse very slowly would result in the mouse pointer not moving at all on the screen, occasionally jumping to a new spot, perhaps when I moved it a little faster or something. Turning it to at least 2 sensitivity completely removed that issue, but made it way too sensitive in game again.
Luckily in the INI file, I noticed a couple of settings regarding MouseX and MouseY Speeds set to +2500.0 each. I have no idea what units they're based off of, but I tried cutting them down to 1250.0 each just to test and it definitely made a difference, but was a little too slow at that point. So I turned them up to 1750.0 and that seemed pretty good. I could also possibly experiment with turning them way down and then using the in game sensitivity slider to boost it up again, but I don't know if that slider is a straight up multiplier or how it affects the setting from the INI file. I may just leave it as is unless I run into some problems like the mouse behaving weirdly in other areas, like the hacking minigame or whatever, because there are separate sections in the INI file for those controls as well.
Anyway, while I was in the INI file, I added the SetFOV 85 to my MoveForward binding, i.e. "W=MoveForward | SetFOV 85" so that whenever I move forward, my FOV gets reset to 85 and that seems to work pretty well.
I also noticed some interesting references to some 'LeanLeft' and 'LeanRight' functions, but when I tried to bind them to keys, they didn't do anything. A bit of a shame, that would've been a really neat find if leaning was actually functioning in the game but unused.
Edit: Oh yeah, and thanks 2K for making us download around 1GB of video files for the console versions that will never ever be used on the PC version. I'm sure people on metered connections really like that.

This is semi-reasonable, they don't know in advance what language you're going to want to use and it lets you change freely. Yes, it's still a waste, but there's still an actual reason behind it.
The PC version is never going to use the console versions of the extra movie files. There's absolutely no reason for them to be packaged together. They just didn't clean shit up before finalizing the PC version of the game.
Only 2 more achievements left in Kingdom Rush: Frontiers. I have to find some alien hunters in various levels and get assassins to steal 10,000 gold cumulatively. There's no in-game counter so I have no idea how close I am, but I suspect that will be the last one I grab. I liked the first Kingdom Rush quite a bit (enough to buy the second on release day), but this one has grabbed me way harder than the first one did.
It helps that my hero unit is a space alien who sometimes calls his ship to abduct enemies and remove them from the battlefield, too.

Sure, there's a reason, but as I said when they expanded the voice language selection (because it wasn't like that at launch), when the files are that big they should have just offered them up as free DLCs. If you want one (or more), they're right there. If you don't, you don't have to download the equivalent of a whole separate big game for zero benefit if you're an English speaker or don't mind just having subtitles in your primary language. Which, to go to your Bioshock point, would be a HUGE deal for someone on a metered connection. That shit could demolish a month's internet allowance in one fell swoop.
Sure, those movie files should've been cleaned up. Not arguing that. But 1GB out of a 20+GB game (four times the size of the original, yeesh) is small potatoes. I'd be willing to bet that half the games that come out these days have a big chunk of wasted space in them.

Yeah, that would've been a pretty good way to do it. Ah well.
And it's 1GB out of about 12GB in Bioshock 1's case, I haven't downloaded 2 yet. At least you can delete the extraneous files to get back the disk space, and I imagine it's the same for Infinite, but yeah, it's still annoying that you have to download it all in the first place.
In looking into it, apparently this weirdness with Bioshock's mouse sensitivity being set to 1 was in the original version of the game as well. There's also another weird thing that I kind of noticed, but someone else confirmed as well, when you first load up into the game, the mouse sensitivity is very low, and then after a few seconds it goes up to where it should be. Really weird.
I'm actually kind of wondering what the port team even did... I mean, is this running on UE3 now officially or what?

12GB is definitely better. Was that the download size? Steam's reporting install sizes of 5703MB for Bioshock, and 21115MB for Bioshock Remastered.
Anyway.
It certainly does raise questions about what the port actually entailed. Hopefully we'll find out more - I'd imagine Eurogamer's Digital Foundry will go over it pretty well. The mouse stuff combined with the movies does seem to shout that the PC version was perhaps half-assed a bit. Hopefully it all runs well and looks good otherwise.

You can also get Arkham Knight with a further 10% off at Bundlestars if you're subscribed to their newsletter. Just be sure to check your emails for the code. Although if you're just using your steam funds, then its probably best to just get it from steam.
Also I just saw I got the remastered editions of Bioshock 1 and 2 added to my steam account. That's so cool! I had completely forgotten about them doing that!
Wait. I'm sorry. Are you telling me that Bioshock 1 and 2 remastered STILL don't have fucking FOV sliders? What the fuck. I shouldn't have to edit INI files just so the game doesn't make me ill.

If a friend who's a console gamer so much as mentions the Bioshock remasters in front of me, it's going to take a Herculean feat of willpower for me to not look a bit smug.
It really is awesome that they did this, especially given the cost of the remasters on the consoles. Most remasters on PC would usually still cost you something (Metro, the Dark Souls thing, etc). Then we get this, and Skyrim too. Pretty damn awesome.
Although the Steam reviews so far for Bioshock 1 Remastered are... uh... not good. Technical issues mostly, it looks like (which explains @Dranyth 's delve into the INI files.)

Ah yes, the download size was 12.5GB-ish as I recall, but looking at the size on disk, it is right around 20GB installed.
As for digging into the INIs, I'd probably do that anyway, especially on an engine as customizable as Unreal. But definitely when I run into weird issues like that. There are virtually no graphics options in game, but looking at the INI it seemed like almost everything such as Textures, Shadows, etc were set on High. The only other thing I noticed was DynamicShadowDetail or something which was set to Medium, I might try switching that to see if there's a difference.
Bioshock is designed around being played with a controller and they didn't really put much effort into M&KB. Then for Bioshock 2 they dropped controller support though I understand they eventually put it back in.
Curious to see if Bioshock 2 has the same problem with FOV as it did the first time - if you were running on a 16:10 monitor you got a bad FOV, but if you set your desktop resolution to 16:9 and THEN launched it, it worked properly.
There is even a warning on the Divinity 2 page telling people it's not Original Sin 2 and giving them the link. Wonder if people just saw $20 and pounced without really thinking.
I could understand the confusion with the whole div 2: other cut stuffs, but do folks really have so much disposable income that they buy the newest, hottest thing without looking at all as to what it actually is?
I don't understand it. To be fair I've never been "stupid rich".

Well they think they're being savvy consumers and getting it half off ($20 vs $45) without realizing it's just a similarly named product.

Berry's Summer Charity Game Challenge
18. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
I feel like this game has already been pretty well covered and praised in past threads, but I'll add my quick thoughts. I definitely enjoyed this one. You play a supernatural detective, who has received a letter asking for your help from a young boy. You explore a village and the surrounding woods, picking up clues and solving puzzles, to figure out just what has gone on there. It's very relaxed, the kind of game you can just take at your own pace, and there is good incentive to explore. Quite a lot of the story can be passed by if you don't or choose not to find it (I know I missed one or two bits - incentive to replay!). The game is also beautiful. I really enjoyed just strolling through the woods and meadows.
Edit: I should add that it can be a bit violent at times, kind of offsetting the peaceful vibe of the surroundings. Things get kind of creepy.
I took way too many screenshots. Here are a couple.
Basically, if you like exploring, mysteries, and beautiful scenery, and don't need a high-action game, this is worth checking out. It is pretty short if that matters to you. It took me between 3 and 4 hours and I wasn't rushing. Thank you so much to @Karrde1842 who gifted this to me way back in November 2014!
Wait, what? When I got my penultimate second last video card (6850 iirc), I looked at the only decent Canadian site at the time and all the XFX cards were old models. I remember doing a quick search and it sounded like while they weren't dead, they weren't really alive either.
My last video card came from my SO picking up a used card for me, so it was a bit of a one off. When the 580/1170 comes around, I'll definitely consider spending an extra few dollars for an XFX.
I think that the internet has been for years on the path to creating what is essentially an electronic Necronomicon: A collection of blasphemous unrealities so perverse that to even glimpse at its contents, if but for a moment, is to irrevocably forfeit a portion of your sanity.

$10 for the new Batman game. Did they ever sufficiently fix the PC port?
I've heard people have had success with it. If you're interested, I'd get it and refund if it doesn't work for you. Cause if you manage to not have issues, it's supposed to be a pretty great game.
Well I did get around to playing the Bioshock remaster all the way through Medical. I guess I was one of the lucky ones as some people are having crashes every 10 minutes or weird buzzing sound problems. I didn't run into any of that. I did end up going through the INI file and setting all occurrences of that 2500 mouse speed setting to just 600, then upped the mouse sensitivity to 3. This seemed to give me almost exactly the same sensitivity in game that I was seeing at a 1750 value, which sort of indicates to me that it's maybe a multiplier, for a final setting of 1800? Although that doesn't explain the 1750 at a 2 sensitivity I suppose. Who knows what they're doing. Regardless, I have no problems at all with the mouse in any of the 2D interfaces, the hacking minigame or the vendors and such. No crashes, even seemed to alt-tab fairly well.
The big problem I had with the original Bioshock 2 was that when you alt-tabbed, it would instantly make all CPU cores jump to 100% usage. It wouldn't exactly be a problem, I just had some sort of issue with my cooling where the CPU running flat out 100% on all cores isn't very desirable, so I like to avoid it.
The biggest remaining issue so far is how any time you load an area or reload the game, the mouse sensitivity is fucked for about 5 seconds and gradually comes back to what it should be. It's really bizarre and I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before. And if you're in a menu/vendor, that 5 seconds doesn't take place, it's only counted while in full mouselook in the game.
So I got into the closed beta for "For Honor" which looked interesting but I figured wouldn't play well.
But HOLY CRAP this went from "meh" to "day 1 purchase" for me after a little time with the beta. Most fun melee dueling system I think I've played in a game.

Good stuff. Highly recommended to check out if the setting and that type of gameplay is up your alley at all. There are a lot of subtitles to the combat too (which are very much not shown in my playing) so I think it will be a pretty deep and satisfying multiplayer game.
I got in as well but cant figure out how to actually play it. It said I got accepted, logged into the site, but cant find any key or anything to actually play the game.
@jclast, how did you get the 'sandworm doesn't get your dudes' one? I took a solid swing at that one and just couldn't pull it off.

I assume that the code must have been so shoddily ported that it would just never be fixable short of a major rewrite. Which they clearly didn't care about.
I have just accepted that I am never going to play it.
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
It worked for me that way too. Finally completed my Mass Effect 3 PC DLC collection for a price that, while still not cheap, was one I could actually stomach.
So I've now bought everything in that entire series twice - 360 and PC.
Totally worth it.

I almost wanted to buy it just to say "gg Bethesda".
Almost.

Well, they make you download, what is it, 20-25GB of multiple language voice files for Bioshock Infinite? They have previous.
Steam | XBL
I wondered why I was currently downloading 40GB for Infinite...

EverSpace is up there too. I might buy it tomorrow and stream it for a bit if people want to watch.
Steam | XBL

Also I just saw I got the remastered editions of Bioshock 1 and 2 added to my steam account. That's so cool! I had completely forgotten about them doing that!

Steam | XBL
Ah yes, the download size was 12.5GB-ish as I recall, but looking at the size on disk, it is right around 20GB installed.
As for digging into the INIs, I'd probably do that anyway, especially on an engine as customizable as Unreal. But definitely when I run into weird issues like that. There are virtually no graphics options in game, but looking at the INI it seemed like almost everything such as Textures, Shadows, etc were set on High. The only other thing I noticed was DynamicShadowDetail or something which was set to Medium, I might try switching that to see if there's a difference.
Curious to see if Bioshock 2 has the same problem with FOV as it did the first time - if you were running on a 16:10 monitor you got a bad FOV, but if you set your desktop resolution to 16:9 and THEN launched it, it worked properly.
Are we sure?

I don't understand it. To be fair I've never been "stupid rich".
Well they think they're being savvy consumers and getting it half off ($20 vs $45) without realizing it's just a similarly named product.
Something like this.
Thankfully there are refunds.
If you ever need to talk to someone, feel free to message me. Yes, that includes you.
I've heard people have had success with it. If you're interested, I'd get it and refund if it doesn't work for you. Cause if you manage to not have issues, it's supposed to be a pretty great game.
I got in as well but cant figure out how to actually play it. It said I got accepted, logged into the site, but cant find any key or anything to actually play the game.
