    Hmm

I want to get a new computer with the money i earned this summer
But i don't really care about playing AAA games at a blistering 3000 frames per second, i just want to be able to play games i have now at higher resolutions/faster load times (the most demanding games i have are probably.... Overwatch? Stellaris?)

Can i build a deskop without too much trouble and without havin to order parts from everywhere and having them show up at different times (i have 0 experience with putting computers together) or can i go for the instant gratification of buying a store desktop with a decent cpu and graphics card even tho it will probably be more expensive?

it will be nearly double the cost once you get into the $800+ range for a store bought desktop computer at the same performance level.

FPS and higher resolutions are intrinsic to each other. Higher FPS means lower resolution, lower FPS means higher resolution is possible. You will likely need the same card if you want 4k resolution video or gameplay as you would getting 7 fps in minecraft.

What's your budget and what can you cannibalize from your current PC?

I am probably willing to spend $1k total, my old desktop was a budget storebought desktop so i doubt there's anything terribly useful in it other than the hard drive (maybe?), obviously i can keep my monitor and other peripherals. So the $1k would go entirely towards the computer components and case.

    Agreed.

Also, I do subscribe to death of the author on certain topics, and whether they intended it or not the story is a million times better when you think of Shepherd as someone going through the steps of being indoctrinated.

It makes much of what happens in the end much more powerful.

    @Orphane

Topper end (a bit more than $1k)
    http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NKnt8K

    Lower end
    http://pcpartpicker.com/list/ndJMvV

You can save $150 if you knock out the platter hard drive and if you already have a copy of windows 7 or 10 laying about. You can also wait a few months for the 1060s to hit the market. It will be comparable to the RX480 from AMD though, and the RX offers a discount. There's no point in using the previous generation's video cards at this point, they cost nearly as much and their performance is garbage unless you're getting a 980ti (which saves you like $200 at the most on the 1080).

Things I absolutely would not change:
    • The CPU, stay in the i5's and above 3.2 GHz. Avoid i5's that end in K because even though a lot of PC builders will tell you "overclocking is so easy now" it comes with a bunch of fucking headaches that just are not worth it for a casual gamer.
    • The Solid State, pretty much crucial for today's computers, it's the single biggest upgrade you can throw in after hard drives, you could probably drop to 256 gb, but if you value your sanity, I would avoid it. But that's another way to save $80

I'm sure moes can improve this and find you better deals
