I didn't care about pins till I went to blizzcon. I still don't collect all the pins in general but I make an exception for Monster Hunter, Blizzard and Nintendo. It's a very expensive side hobby.
In MHXX I'm doing the 3-star village quests (so I'm early in the game) and I'm wearing konchu helm and braces, and hermitaur tassets and greaves. I have a charm that gives +8 to health and a vitality decoration. Wearing all of these things gives me +20 to health and +1 to guard. Here's the problem: the Maccao mail I'm wearing looks stupid with the rest of my outfit. I bought the hermitaur mail but wearing it drops my constitution and I don't have constitution decorations unlocked apparently.
So I'm shopping for armour with any skill as long as it looks good with my outfit.

Testucabra? It also has health so you can free up that slot and should be the same red-ish shade as the Hermitaur.

It's hard to NOT play Fashion Hunter. I usually go with full sets just for this reason. There's better mix and match sets but I look so AWESOME in Rathalos mail head-to-toe! On a related note, I got to Rathalos and got a full kit from him in no time flat because I am so familiar with everything from Gen.
Alright here's the outfit I'm rocking for now. It' definitely better to just use the full Hermitaur set but I wanted to use the Konchu gear and now I'm in over my head.
We have a store here called Lost Ark that carries a bunch of imported stuff from Japan, like blind boxes, pins, figures, etc. So I've gotten some cool stuff like this pin:
Steam Profile | My Art | NID: DarkMecha (SW-4787-9571-8977) | PSN: DarkMecha
i would fashion hunter but I could barely read anything in MHXX and have no idea what anything does. So i'll probably make a straight set or a suggested set where I don't need a specific charm to make it work.

Lost Ark is amazing but I never manage to find the time to go there myself for some reason. I've been gifted several blind boxes from there, though.
Naked Hunter. All in all I played 4 times. Once per day. AMA.
Edit: Woah didn't know how big that image was on desktop. Found the thumbnail.
I was there all weekend too! I didn't get a chance to play the demo since the line was constantly capped but I did get to hand out a bunch of free vinyl stickers and pins to the people waiting in line Friday and Saturday. It was nice to see so many veterans and new people hyped up for the game. The footage I did see and watching people play the demo was pretty great. So far MHW checks the boxes I care about. HBG looks really fun and I may have to go for that one or maybe GL out the gates.
It's like they've been watching everyone teach new players for a decade, not changing anything but taking notes, and now they're implementing it ALL into one game. I think I may be more excited for World than any release in the last 5+ years.
So, guys, I know we're not really talking about it anymore, but Monster Hunter Stories? How deep is it? My hunting buddy wants to know if I'm getting it and I said no, but now he's pouting so I thought I'd check in with you guys.

Apex Gaming on Youtube has some videos about the mechanics and the PVP meta, they should give you an idea of how deep it is.

Not at all a fan of the new skill system AS SHOWN, but presuming they bring in more unique skills, negatives, etc, it could still be fine.

True, I'm just assuming they have skills from the previous iterations at the very least, with perhaps some new interesting ones. The 'cross the 10 threshold' thing is a huge pain when you are one point short and don't have the perfect Charm.

While that's true, it's also what made the system work with all the armour mixes. In this new system, what's the difference between one piece of +1 attack armour and the next? (And that's already on top of cutting out half the armour by smooshing ranged and melee sets together.) Seems much more limited from what we've seen, but of course that's all subject to change.

The demo is also pretty huge, it's literally the first few hours of the game. You can get well past the introduction and tutorial sections, into a big area where you get to roam around freely.

The way MH World is turning out so far
If it isn't the defining game that brings Monster Hunter from "charming niche game with devoted core following" into the spotlight it deserves
I love the old skill system. I usually just set what skills I want and make a set for it. I often do not need a good charm to get what I want but I also don't play the top meta. I spreadsheet out the skills I want and figure it out based on the charms I have.
So I will miss it in World. The rest of the game should make up for it though and there's probably something there for people like us who liked the old system.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

I can't count how many times I've been in a conversation about games or overheard a conversation about games and Dark Souls comes up with the purpose of talking about deliberate, fair-yet-difficult combat, and I either bring up or want to bring up Monster Hunter. I get a combination of blank stares and "oh yeah I've heard of that but never played it." Now its on PS4 and has a real chance at getting a bigger western audience.
Platform is probably a pretty big factor tbh. Even if people own the platforms many of them won't play monster hunter because the controls are truly awful.

dark souls is only really tangentially similar to monster hunter in that they both have heavy animation priority in their combat. even the hardest dark souls bosses have a tiny fraction of the health relative to player damage of the weaker large monsters in monster hunter, and dark souls is very much about lore and exploration as much as it is about punishing combat.
dark souls kinda is the western popular version of monster hunter, in that they took that one bit that could be fun to a wider audience and made an entirely different game and genre around it.

Also I am almost certainly gonna main the hbg for once. It was awesome playing it with the mhw demo.

Yeah the demo will definitely let you know if you'll enjoy it or not.

nothing. it's a niche game with a devoted core following in the west, and to make widely popular will make it not monster hunter.
So I'm looking forward to getting to try it out - finally - with MHW.
I dunno, there's no reason it couldn't at least reach a Dark Souls level of mainstream. Deliberate combat isn't that small a niche.
I am not sure platform had as much to do with it as everyone is ascribing.

Want talk about bad controls? The psp claw was far worse than anything on the 3ds.
I just think some of this talk lacks proper historical perspective on a 10 year old series.
XBL:Phenyhelm - 3DS:Phenyhelm
I don't see how that's relevant to the larger discussion of platform being a limiting factor?
