Windows 10 Home OEM is $92 at Amazon, or retail is $109 on a USB3 drive.

Probably a long shot, but is there a way to get a legal copy of Windows for less than ~$100ish? I'm giving some spare parts to a friend doing a super low cost/low end first build, and the Windows license is by far the most expensive thing they'll need.

Do you or he have an old broken POS that has a windows 7 or 8 key? You can still (with no likelihood of this ever changing) activate Windows 10 with your Windows 7 or 8 product key.

Ugh, I can't get the permissions to delete that old Windows install on my secondary drive. My account is listed as Full Control, and I'm listed as the owner, but it won't let me delete anything due to incorrect permissions. Been following instructions online and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Go to the root folder, go to Properties -> security tab -> advanced

At the top if it lists your account ast the owner jump to the bolded section.

If it does not list your primary account as owner:

click 'change' -> advanced -> find now (it's on the right)

The list at the bottom should populate. Scroll through it and find the name of your account. Select it and hit ok. Hit ok again.

Check the replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permissions from this object.

Hit ok, and hit ok again. Go pop some popcorn because this might take awhile.

I can't do that part. Every time I try to do that, it pops up with this immediately:
    Lcy6IS5.png
If I click continue, that pops up the same error for the next folder, and the next, and the next, etc. If I cancel, it warns me about how it might lead to an inconsistent state where some objects have different settings, and to apply the correct settings immediately, but I can't because it gives me that same error every time I try.

If there's stuff on that drive that you don't want to/can't afford to lose than really it should be backed up somewhere else already anyway. Good opportunity to do that.

What was the old adage? If it's not backed up in 3* separate places, technically it doesn't exist.

Any chance you know someone with a spare external or extra drive you could borrow just as a placeholder?

*The cloud kind of changed that a bit, but I've still helped with all kinds of situations where Dropbox or Drive had a fit doing diffs and "ate" people's data. It happens pretty regularly with people making lots of changes, or attempting to use it as a synced folder

In the event of the literal worst eventuality, remember you can take out that old drive, buy a new one, and access the old in via an enclosure--barring drive failure or any sort of permissions insanity, which is generally not an impossible obstacle so long as you're not dealing with images, at least in my experience. So you'll have literally a complete image of everything you need to reinstall, everywhere it needs to be, immediately accessible.

This costs more than a complete image backup, though unlike a manual backup, you don't miss anything.

Going through the misery of a complete system recreation is a little better when you know nothing's missing. But then again, I'm the guy who periodically takes a complete image of my C drive, then drops it onto another drive, fearing the day I'll ever have to use one.

What made you go for a 1070 over a 1060.

Obviously a 1070 is better but I felt I'd be getting more bang for my buck with a 1060. The price difference didn't match the performance boost in my mind (though if I'm chatting shit, please someone tell me).

The 1070 is the breakpoint where you can manage 1440p at 100FPS+, so it's required if you ever want to game higher than 1080p.

For a second, I thought that was KOTOR--and I was going to congratulate you for >25GB in mods.

The fact that I installed it on an SSD is what's keeping me from installing that 58 GB high resolution texture set for Fallout 4. I still have 136 GB left on the drive, but fifty eight gigabytes makes me contemplative. That's one to two games, after all. If it were a normal drive, I wouldn't give it a second thought...and it's a Bethesda game, so the loading times can be weirdly long on SSDs too, annoyingly.

I used to hoard/keep every steam game downloaded at all times. Then I realized that I play like, 4 games regularly, and there are truly maybe 10 other games I might go back to every once in a while. The rest.... Probably haven't touched in years, so I'm probably not going to again.

I actually found that giving up digital hoarding was one of the best things I ever did. Aside from the truly important stuff like pictures and documents.... I just really don't care anymore.

Ahhh, I miss those days where I was like that too. Most of the time, I play a game based on what mood I'm in. On some days, I'll jump from Rise of the Tomb Raider to Subnautica, to Cities: Skylines, and eventually end up playing American Truck Simulator. Other days, it'll be a Call o' Duty: Black Ops 3/Ghost/Infinite Warfare kind of day followed by a little Elite: Dangerous RES farming, and ARK. And then there are the multiplayer games that I'll get sucked into because my friends want to play.

It also really doesn't help that I get bored easily when a game doesn't grab me with a compelling story (the three most recent games that grabbed me with their stories and compelled me to keep playing until the end of the story were Brütal Legend, Mass Effect 3, and Life Is Strange), which results in more game hopping.

Project "Fit 4 2TB drives into a case the size of a toaster" is going well thus far.

Ended up cutting down the CPU cooler backplate to get it to fit, made sure to sand any sharp edges and clean up burrs/particulate before mounting. Both of the drives on the bottom tray are in, although they're sort of hanging on the mounting screws in a way that I don't like much. The screws don't seem to go in far enough to tighten the drives to the tray so there's a few MM of slip. I guess I could cut down the screws or find shorter ones or maybe get some washers in there?

It did post on the first try and all the diagnostics came back clean, win10 pro installed, and now things get interesting.

I'm waiting on some aluminum sheet to craft a tray for the top drive or two and will need to do some additional bodywork on the rear case panel to get the USB cables needed for the 3rd/4th drives routed back inside the case.

I used to be like that too, but I found what happened was that I would buy 10 games I was mildly interested in and never really put any significant time into any of them, which is basically wasting money. Steam sales were really bad for this.

I really try to only buy games I know I'm going to play to completion or in a case like Civ VI or Cities, put a ton of time into. If I'm buying a game and not willing to start playing it within a week, why am I buying it? I also find that too much choice also leads to getting bored with a game more often, because "I can just go play [this other game]" is too easy.

It's amazing how much money I've saved over the past couple years by saying no, I'm not going to buy any game I have a passing interest in.

I still won't keep all my Steam/PC games installed, mostly because I'm not 'a PC'. But my connection is suuuuuuuuuuper shity. 2Mb/s. yes, small 'b'. So when I buy stuff from XBL, I transfer it onto the 2TB external I created for the purpose.

If I had to do it for PC, I'd just get WD Black of a suitable size and 'suffer' through slower loads. I've used maybe 1/4 of my 500GB SSD. And then I have 6TB of mechanical drives for everything else. I'm good.

If I was only going to play 4 games at a time, I wouldn't have bought a second SSD. What would've been the justification otherwise?

My "problem", if you want to call it that, is I don't get addicted to any game. It doesn't happen. I have 1138 hours in Skyrim (and the construction kit for making and altering mods), but I can't think of a time where I played more than two hours of Skyrim before playing something else. Usually it's barely half that.

Combined with game sizes ballooning in the last few years, and you end up in that situation. It has nothing to do with hoarding, and everything to do with variety being the spice of life. That, and I mod the hell out of games, which means by definition I can't just wipe them out unless I'm fine with losing everything.

WoW still takes up the lion's share of my gaming, but I've been branching into Heroes recently, and I'm mulling over trying to finally get all the starters leveled to 10 in Hearthstone (after watching some Day9 streams).

I bought Titanfall 1 at full price and put maybe two hours into it. Since then, the last game I bought NOT on steep discount is WoW: Legion. I paid $12 for a copy of Stardew Valley about two weeks before it showed up on the Humble Bundle, but I still consider that a discount.

I mostly blame WoW for this, but it's now tough for me to get into a game that doesn't have some sort of co-op/social element.

@Molybdenum I'm assuming your drives are mechanical drives? If so, they use standard PC case screws; so there's a good chance you can find shorter screws, if you don't have any floating around. You can also use double sided tape to get them stuck (heh) in place.

@AngelHedgie Grabbed an IOGear hub/switch thing and it does exactly what I want - I can swap up to 4 devices between my work setup and my home setup with the click of a button. Super nifty and way less expensive than buying an actual kvm. I have to manually switch inputs on my monitors but thats not that big of a deal (and eats into the relatively short time for the inputs to reinitialize on whatever computer I'm looking to use). It also for some weird reason seems to have resolved the issues I've been having with my G700s mouse so thats super nice. All in all, pretty good $20 spent.

I cancelled my switch preorder and the 1070 was on sale for exactly the money I was going to spend on the switch.

I just ordered a 1070 to replace my old 550. Should be a bit of an improvement.

so in other words you carefully reasoned your decision, spent days poring over all options in your mind, and made a well-informed choice.

So what's a good motherboard that supports the i7-7700K and a Samsung 960 PRO M.2 PCIe NVMe?

one of the midrange ASUS ROG boards would be my go to

Hmm none of the ROG ones support the PCIe M.2s as far as I can see, amazon isn't being too helpful though.

Hey, anyone here (possibly in the Alberta area) have any use for some EVGA GTX 680 FTW's? 4GB cards were running in SLI, I recently replaced them with a 1070. I'd like to get something for them, but I'm not delusional ($350? Ya fucking right, bud.)

Could anyone use something like this? Or any idea what it might be worth?

The 680 is only a tick below the 970 (though admittedly at a ludicrously higher power consumption) and roughly on par with the 770, so they are still capable cards. That said, the 1060 eclipses them by 50% at a price tag of ~$280 and they are only barely faster (~20%) than the 1050Ti @ $190.

Given that they're used, and that for someone to take both they would need a beefy PSU that they might not have, I would speculate that you'd probably manage $130-150 each, tops, maybe letting them go for $200 for the two as a discount to get rid of them both.
