I just ordered a 1070 to replace my old 550. Should be a bit of an improvement.
What made you go for a 1070 over a 1060.
Obviously a 1070 is better but I felt I'd be getting more bang for my buck with a 1060. The price difference didn't match the performance boost in my mind (though if I'm chatting shit, please someone tell me).
I cancelled my switch preorder and the 1070 was on sale for exactly the money I was going to spend on the switch.
so in other words you carefully reasoned your decision, spent days poring over all options in your mind, and made a well-informed choice.
I mean, it was the one logical increments recommended.
I have a 250D Corsair case. I had an h100i in there but it makes a weird noise when turned sideways (mounted to the side of the case) and got a refund from Corsair. So now I have 70ish bucks to put towards a quieter air cooler and need suggestions. The front of the case accepts 200/140/120mm fans and there's a bunch of extra 120mm fan slots on the sides.
I'm not entirely opposed to simply getting a new midish sized case and transplanting my machine into that, but I like my little box overall.
Any suggestions for CPU coolers that'll fit in this thing and be effective for an i7-4770k I probably won't overclock anytime soon?

It's hard not to imagine you won't be pleased with your decision, the GTX 1070 is a fine choice. Of course, there are limitations--at 1440p, you'll run into plenty of games that you won't hit 60 FPS with everything set to the absolute highest settings. Shit, Fallout 4 at 1440p gives me problems on my overclocked GTX 1080. But dial it back a reasonable amount, and you'll be in an excellent place at that, or higher or lower resolutions accordingly. It's a very capable card--I would've gotten the same if I wasn't upgrading from a GTX 970 with power to spare (you have to justify these things somehow. )/
So if I snag an h60 (well within the budget too!) I could use it on one of the side ports, put a normal fan in the other half of it, and be doing okay?
I'm unsure what you mean by "other half." You don't need to set up a push-pull fan config like some people use for air coolers. If you mean other half of the side ports of your case, yeah, that should work. You're only limited by the length of the tubing. I have mine mounted at the fan mount right next to the motherboard UI plate.
THe corsair 250d has two 120mm fan slots on the side, so I'd use one for the radiator, one for a regular fan. Video card is opposite side, two exhaust ports in the back I could add fans into (were just passive due to size of h100i) and there's a 140mm fan in the front acting as an intake.
edit: I see an awful lot of H60 talk being pretty negative in my googling though. Most people are like JUST USE AN AIR COOLER GAWD but it's hard to figure out what's reputable and what's not. Other than the annoying noise my h100i was great.
Air cooling is simple enough, but to be really effective they can get McLargehuge.
A simple guideline for liquid cooling is one fan per object to be cooled. A dual fan radiator AIO is a bit overkill for just a CPU unless you intend to squeeze every last bit of performance via OC. An h60 should be plenty for your needs.
I am so damn pleased that the Ryzen chipset is actually COMPELLING this time around. I've been considering trying my hand at streaming some stuff, and some of those higher end SKU's look REALLY good for the price. Can't wait to see how these things perform in the wild!
Between you and me, Peggy, I smoked this Juul and it did UNTHINKABLE things to my mind and body...
If anything, I just want some actual competition for Intel. AMD kicking their asses for a few years is what got them to finally drop Netburst and go to the significantly better Core architecture that their processors are still based on today.

If you loved your H100i, I recommend you contact Corsair. Unofficial word I've read lately is they have a 5 year warranty on their AIOs. At the very least, reach out to them and tell them your situation. It's possible they will send you a replacement.

Yeah they did, problem is they sent me a v2 replacement which doesn't fit. Had to send that back and they'd send me a refund for the v1 h100i. I just got my refund check for the original purchase yesterday and I submitted that warranty claim in December. So now I have some cash to replace my h100i's annoying noise. And again, I could also get a new case and just use that instead assuming it has a spot for a top mounted h100i instead of on the side.
Oh ballsack. I read that above and completely forgot about it.

Ryzen looks really, really good. The 1800X is an 8-core/16 thread chip at 500 bucks, 90W TDP and IPC in line with Intel's Core line. If it's within 5% performance of current i7's it's a fucking steal.
I think certainly AMD will take the crown for multi-threaded performance per dollar, the question is what their single threaded performance ends up doing. That's been their Achilles heel for a while, and why Intel has dominated gaming. If it's close AMD definitely has a winner on their hands.
$500 though? You can get an i7 for cheaper than $500.
Not an 8-core/16 thread i7. The equivalent i7 to that is 1100 bucks. For that matter, you can drop down to the 1700X, which is still 8C/16T, and is priced 50 bucks less than Intel's 6C/12T part.

Cores are the new "GHz" I suppose. Throwing more cores doesn't necessarily give you good performance, while cores are important for some of us that multitask and compile and encode and all that, I don't think it'll equate to a better/faster CPU at the price point there.
I guess reviews will tell.

Which is why I said the IPC gains of Ryzen are a big deal, because single threaded performance will ultimately make or break whether Ryzen puts pressure on Intel or is just a multi-threaded tasking monster and not much else.
Quit trying to throw a wet blanket on everything :hydra:

If Rizen's single-thread performance can at least approach a modern i7, then AMD chips could be a legit contender again. It would be great if, when speccing out a new build, I don't reflexively hit that "Intel" checkbox when searching for CPUs.

I have an H60 and it's a champ. Keeps my 6600k frosty even at 4GHz.
The only thing is that for the same price as an H60 you could get a fairly nice air cooler with similar performance, so a lot of people don't think watercooling is worth it until you hit the $100+ mark. There are still benefits to watercooling though, so either way you'll be set.
I'm also really interested to see how they compare in the mid-low range.
If their$500 part compares with an $1100 Intel part, their $300 part compares with a $400 part, I want to see what the part that has comparable performance to an i5 looks like. The i5-7600 is currently sitting at $230 at newegg. Can they get their equivalent at $180? That would be great.
I just want benchmarks and real use comparisons, honestly. Cores and clock speed have lost all meaning to me since my last few CPU buys have been "what's the cheapest CPU I can find for this socket" and "I have X dollars what's the best CPU I can get."
All I need is a side-by-side showing one chip Photoshops more fasterer than the other.
I think I'm settled on the h60 (especially since amazon's doing that 9 bucks off thing today) and am wondering if I should replace the stock fan that comes with it. Seeing quite a few people say the corsair fan is a little noisy and I'd love to spent a few extra bucks and cut that down. Any h60 fan replacement suggestions?

I'd wait for the eventual 1080Ti if you want to do 4k gaming. The 1080 is *almost* good enough to do 4k consistently, but isn't quite there yet. If you buy it with the idea of doing 4k it probably won't age very well.

The twin pack is only 5 dollars more? I mean I'll have extra fan slots but should I put an SP there or a standard kinda thing? And thanks! looks great for the h60

They no longer make the h100i v1 and the v2 doesn't fit.
H60 or H80 are possibilities but seem like they'd be louder given the single fan kinda setup? Quiet and cool are my aims here definitely.
Will take a look at the 212! (edit: 212 way too big for my case)

Granted, I have a different usage profile, but single fan solutions are still worthwhile.

Well, this is promising. Will have to wait and see benchmarks and hardware, but definitely promising.

should I go amd instead of i7 this time through
hm
You won't be getting your grubby Intel greased hands on them until March 2nd.
I was thinking about building a new PC around the 1080Ti when/if it comes out.. The possibilities is making me have some feels in my pants.
