Can anyone vouch for IDW's Godzilla comics? I know Half Century War is good, and they recently had a series where Godzilla goes to Hell (called Godzilla in Hell, obviously), but something makes me hesitant about the others.

For example, it seems like they use as many monsters as they can all the time to the point where it doesn't feel especially significant when any one of them shows up. Even Half Century War is kinda like this, where Space Godzilla appears without explanation as to why he exists.

It's the opposite problem of past Godzilla comics which only ever used new monsters because Toho was charging a licensing fee per monster at the time.

img]WATCH OUT, ASSHOLES! HERE COMES ULTRAMAN TO BEAT YOUR SHIT DOWN

The Ultra Series is a long running television franchise in Japan, considered to be one of the most important pieces of Daikaiju history as well as televised tokusatsu. It revolves around heroes bearing the name Ultraman (with the exception of Ultra Q and Ultraseven) and their struggles to defend the world against the threat of kaiju. In fact, the franchise is 50 years old this year!

Ultraman is very cool because the kaiju fights are much more visceral than its counterparts on TV like Super Sentai. Instead of a giant robot flailing impotently with a sword, you have fights like this:

this is just a straight up BRAWL and it rules!

The Ultra series had a bit of a slump about a decade ago but it's putting out very good products lately, and: you can watch most of them in English!

This is Ultraman Orb, the current iteration of the franchise. It's an anniversary show, so it's very much about celebrating the past in the process of telling its own story. Kurenai Gai is an Ultraman who lost access to his own powers, and now defends Earth by using the Orb Ring to fuse the powers of past Ultramen together! It's funny! It's kinda badass! The bad guy's name is JUGGLUS JUGGLER!

and, much like basically every recent ultra series, is completely free to watch on Crunchyroll!

You forgot to mention Ultraman was created by Eiji Tsuburaya, the original special effects director behind Godzilla.

You also forgot to mention that half of the monsters in the original Ultraman were Baragon in disguise.

Tsuburuya borrowed the suit they were gonna use for the next Godzilla movie and stuck a fin on it.

I read a few of them, and they weren't great - I think Half Century War is the only real standout, even Godzilla In Hell apparently wasn't very good once they switched off Stokoe as the artist (who is of course the artist for Half Century War).

Godzilla in Hell really sucked beyond the first issue which bummed me right the hell out.

  • GustavGustav Registered User regular
Yeah I excitedly nabbed the first issue only to find he wasn't doing the following installments. And I kinda bounced from there.

You can't just tease me with Stokoe drawing Godzilla fighting through Hell. Like that's fucking cruel.

I liked final wars a bunch.

    1998 godzilla got dunked on.

    Plus at the end
The main human guy was going to fight godzilla with a sword but then everyone was like "nononono" and he relaxed and then the movie ended.

Final Wars needed a bit more time spent on monster fights, but all the monster fights were fantastic, so I can't really complain that much.

    Anguirus

    Hmn.

I mean, Anguirus is kinda the Krillin of the Kaiju set, between being relatively "normal", his status as Godzilla's best friend, and his unholy ability to recover from a beating, but he's kind of a failure at the main point of a jobber. You need to get built up before the takedown for that. Anguirus isn't that guy. Anguirus getting his ass kicked is treated like a reasonable course of events whenever he shows up, and his staying in the fight is treated as a showing of how tough he is.

He went solo against King Ghidora for a few rounds and walked it off.

He loses at least as often as not, but jobbers are supposed to make you go "Holy cow, Main Wrestler is a badass" not "Did you see how long he stayed in the fight? I mean, Main Wrestler DEMOLISHED all those other guys, but Jobber here made him work for it."

    The prequel one is good!

It has a better Idris Elba speech than the movie!

    Dear Godzilla thread,

If I like the idea of kaiju conceptually, but I don't have much experience with them beyond Pacific Rim, Godzilla 2014, and the Godzilla animated series from the 90s, where's a good place to start? What are the series highlights?

Bear in mind that the original King Kong is one of my favourite films so I have a very high tolerance for dated special effects.

See the original Godzilla. It's not a big monster rumble, but it is a classic for a reason. Sad and dramatic.

Godzilla 2000's fun in the dub. Only one fight at the end, but it's enjoyable anyway.

Larva Mothra got its ass kicked by Ghidorah in order to get Godzilla and Rodan to stop fighting and take it on.

I don't know how much more conclusively ass kicked you can get than that.

Gustav, no, this thread specifically says it's only for Godzilla and less important kaiju. Clearly Gamera has to get its own thread.
