I watched it again just the other day as well, alongside someone who had never seen a Godzilla movie before
They were very positive about it! Beyond the void of charisma or personality that is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, it's a really well-paced, downright gorgeous movie that had them gasping at the visuals more than once
I hope the sequel can carry forward that sense of scale and awe. I really liked the way Krampus looked, so hopefully!
Somewhere there's an executive going "You know, Dale.. Instead of marketing for this movie, why don't we use the weather machine to, like, hold the world hostage or something?"

My favourite thing about that movie, is that you could go back in time to the 1980’s, give Toho the script and just film it as a hesei era movie no problems at all.
I find anecdotally the people who were disapointed in the movie hadn’t seen any of the Japanese Godzilla movies, and were expecting basically a non-stop disaster movie 1998 style.

Those people would be completely perplexed by Shin Godzilla then. Personally I really liked it, although it is definitely a different flavor then the 2014 movie.

Would they? Shin Godzilla is much closer to Godzilla 1998 than Godzilla 2014.
Shin Godzilla is really intresting in that it’s a disaster movie that’s chooses to focus on government incompetence instead of like, Dwayne Johnson in a helicopter looking at explosions. It’s makes super sense as a response to fukashima.
I think the government response in Shin was as competent as it could be in mobilizing against a threat nobody has ever had a contingency for

The main thing I remember about the government nerds in Shin Godzilla was that their job titles would appear on the screen, and they eventually got so long that they wouldn't fit on the screen.

Basically the highest praise I can give Shin Godzilla is that my brother and mom loved it when I convinced them to go see it with me and those two normally despise having to read subtitles+don't normally like monster movies.
Seeing some speculation that Charles Dance plays Tom Hiddleston character in the movie.
That'd be interesting. I saw somewhere in the Monarch viral marketing that there was a second expedition to Skull Island in the 90s. I wonder if that'll be touched on at any point.

It eventually does, but I feel there’s definitely a running joke in the first half that the traditional chain of command is incapable of reacting quickly enough to the threat.
It’s only when the chain of command is flattened and a team of specialists is created to make quick, independent decisions (mimicing how Godzilla’s own body adapts) that the humans are able to fight back.
Yeah, the problem in Shin isn't incompetence really, just the inability for a big bureaucratic structure to react quickly enough, combined with a lot of people too afraid of rocking the boat or endangering their future careers (or their bosses' current careers) to say anything risky.
The better the depictions of the kaiju get, the more laughable the idea is that King Kong could take on any of them and not just get owned instantly like the non-threat that he is.

Godzilla anime is real rad, can't wait for part 3
King Ghidorah is named "Monster Zero" (Heh, nice reference) and is bio-electric type. He's frozen in Antartica
Mothra has "unknown" listed as her, uh, power type I guess? But her bio mentions light a lot. She's in the Yunnan Rainforest in China.

Hopefully you'll figure that out sooner rather than later.

I'm glad that we can get both 80s-style King of the Monsters and something more reminiscent of the original '54 film
