Apparently the novelization (based on an earlier draft of the film) has some stuff that may have been cut out that could hint at what the next film could be about. This video gets into it about nine minutes in.

Human vs Titan war for the Hollow Earth seems a bit far fetched given just how out of their league humanity has been. Maybe they'll build a Moguera or Jet Jagaur or something similar but not trademarked by Toho.

I still want an Earth vs Aliens titan war, personally. Maybe that can be the following movie.

I dunno, Mechagodzilla seemed ridiculously powerful! Obviously Godzilla was exhausted having wasted all his energy blowing a hole into the core of the planet and wrasslin' Kong, but... that was still pretty fucking one-sided! The robo imitation built by humans absolutely wrecked our boy.

Well, technically that was Ghidorah.. I think? But regardless, Godzilla, while powerful, is only a single titan. Even Kong managed to get the upper hand in their second fight. Mechagodzilla failed again Kong and Godzilla working together, and Kong now has an entire society of giant apes following him now.

Off the top of my head:
Human vs Titan war seems a lot less far fetched given the number of titan corpses Godzilla's been leaving in his wake.
It seemed that Mecha G was built from the remains of one titan, it seems likely that some other party may be collecting titan bits to build their own monsters. A dark anti-Monarch group, financed by corporations looking to exploit Hollow Earth and the Titans.
Monarch gets defunded by the world governments, new Not-Monarch comes out in public and reveals their Jaegers (to beat monsters, we built monsters of our own) and take the fight into Hollow Earth, leaving our Monarch group to work to organize the titans or at least let them know what's coming for them so the Great Ape army and others can unite for a fantastic CGI battle.
Monarch and the Iwi (sp?) set off some sort of doomsday weapon in their underground pyramid thing while CGI monsters fight CGI robot monsters, and it knocks out the combatants, but at what cost? Or maybe it just knocks out the robots, but they've taken enough of a toll on the Titans to dramatically reduce Earth's Titan population. Leaving those remaining (relatively) free to wreak havoc, without Godzilla showing up to make them behave.

The cost is that the weapon opened up new portals to Hollow Earth and the surface that lead someplace else, bringing in the potential for our Earth vs Alien monster war.

    But then, I'm no writer.

Well crap, went to go see Godzilla x Kong and I rather liked it? I think I may have liked it even more the King of the Monsters, but it's infinitely better than GvK. Thoughts:
    • They seem to fully embrace the Showa era camp, where as the last movie and especially KotM's seemed to resist and want too many "serious" moments, especially with the human characters.
    • The casting director should get a raise for getting Dan Stevens and to a lesser extent Alex Ferns. I couldn't stand Bernie in the last one, but pairing him with Trapper as a buddy character, made him way more tolerable (it helps they moved away from conspiracy and into documentary for him as well). Dan was just stellar, he knew the assignment and just went for it.
    • I was really impressed with how much screen time just the kaiju got. Normally you can almost picture executive meddling thinking the audience needs human foils for them in the past movies. But it was great seeing Kong and Suko interacting without needing humans around to explain it to the audience.
    • Overall the pace of the movie was well done. I do think they could have trimmed 15-20 minutes as I was starting to feel some fatigue by the end. Personally I think they could have cut some of the Kong parts to give Godzilla a bit more time. I would have liked a bit more to him fighting Tiamat.

Overall, I was really impressed by this bounce back. It's almost like they heard the criticism of the last one and actually did something about it. The human plot was simple but effective, centering around Jia. My only complaints, I personally would have liked the CG kaiju battle at the end to have a bit more weight to it, slow it down just a tad. It felt like an CG explosion sometimes with everything going on. I'm not a fan of pink Godzilla, but I understand the need for new toys and can get over it.

My pure fandom complaints mostly center around Mothra. I would have liked to see a chrysalis that she comes out of vs just appearing. I was hoping for a Jia twin from hollow earth for the call back. Most importantly, where was my Mothra music? Bear did a great job in KotM's, but we got nothing here, come on!

They have to go aliens next right? It almost makes too much sense. They are renewing Monarch for a season 2. It's the perfect vehicle for a slow moving alien infiltration plot. With the back half arc reveling the aliens and their plan to bring Ghidorah back (and Gigan if Legendary would just back up the money truck to Toho). Then the next Kong/Godzilla movie can be a call back to older godzilla movies, maybe bring back Rodan and have Kong, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan vs Ghidorah, Gigan, and maybe some new alien kaiju (Megalon could work given hollow earth, and seems like he's be a good match up for Kong).

It’ll either be space (Gigan) or deeper into Hollow Earth and we encounter something like Biollante.

For some reason I’ve seen a ton of “omg the Godzilla that ate a star has to be Spacegozilla and that’s who’s next and I’m like “big G has a plasma breath weapon, I’m fairly certain that’s who they were talking about.”

    Future speculation:
I could see Megalon or a non-toho version. You have 2 sets of Iwi now. It would be pretty easy to do the splinter faction that broke off long ago. You could even tie them into the aliens in an ancient aliens sort of thing.

My biggest concern right now is that Legendary seems content to keep moving forward with their own stuff. I really hope they figure out some way to work with Toho to bring in more classic kaiju.

Unfortunately it's cheaper to just pay someone to come up with a new kaiju design that accomplishes the same thing as a Toho monster.
There's no reason, say, Tiamat couldn't have just been Manda, other than Legendary would have to pay Toho more money.

I think for a one-off five minute appearance it makes perfect sense to create an original kaiju instead of licensing one. If it's one of the lesser known or less important Toho monsters all you really get from licensing it is one or two nerds in the audience shouting and pointing, and if it's one of the bigger ones it feels like a waste to bring them in for something small.

I think if Legendary was up to licensing another Kaiju, the most likely answer is Gigan, because it’s up there as an iconic foe and was a common villain.

Hedorah could be an interesting alternative given it can be the negative version of the Legendary Kaijus’ restoration auras.

IIRC they already have a few home grown ones that are similar to other Kaiju (fairly certain there’s already at least one Biollante style Kaiju in the tie-in comics).

    I just learned today that
while they had planned to feature Mothra from the beginning, it was apparently so uncertain that they would actually get the permission to use her that they had a substitute named Phosphera prepped, with an image of her even appearing in the final movie.

I'm 100% on board with non toho kaiju. I really liked the stuff they did in Monarch. However, Legendary needs to just get the core Toho ones on lock. Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah, and Gigan. Hedorah and Megalon could easily replaced with non-toho versions with little impact. Space Godzilla, Destroyah, and Biollante would all be movie/show dependent. Both Destroyah and Biollante seem like good options for the show since they have slow build ups, but it all depends on where they want to focus. Everything else would have fan easter egg appeal but probably isn't worth the licensing and could be replicated by something similar.

It's kind of funny how the film "Godzilla: Minus Zero" is about a Japanese pilot abandoning the war and taking his plane with him.

As if he was subtracting a Zero from the Japanese air force.

Rewatching the 98 movie. It's kinda charming! I love how Zilla repeatedly dodges missiles that then blow up landmarks. Back to back scenes!

Zilla's roars are interesting. Sometimes it sounds just like Godzilla (I assume they're just sampling from other movies) but they also have a lotta weird unique sounds.

The filmmakers seemed to coward out on having atomic breath? It's very strange, there's a scene where some army trucks are chasing it, they abruptly stop, turn and roar, there's a ripple of air and then a massive explosion, and Zilla's mouth is glowing. So I guess Zilla has... flammable breath? Lol.

    Also visible cloaca. Amazing.

Yeah, the design wasn't the problem.

I should probably track down that animated series at some point; it and Monster Island are basically the only Godzilla things I haven't seen in some capacity. (Yes, I've seen the Hanna Barbara cartoon, or at least bits of it.)
