Godzilla and other, less important Kaiju

But seriously though let's talk Godzilla.

There was just a new Godzilla movie released in Japan for the first time in over 10 years, Shin Gojira, with a somewhat controversial new design for the big G and an interesting new direction -

Directed by Hideaki Anno, creator of Evangelion, and Shinji Higuchi of the live-action Attack on Titan, the film intends to bring Godzilla back to its roots in horror and create a creature that's truly menacing. Since it's already been released in Japan you can probably find spoilers and plot details if you dig around on the internet a bit, but don't be a dick about it. Funimation has obtained the rights to the film and announced they intended to bring it to theaters, but so far no dates have been announced for either a theatrical or home release.

Toho is also producing a Godzilla animated film in 2017, though the relation to Shin Gojira or the plethora of other continuities is still unknown.

There's also still supposedly a sequel coming to the recent Legendary Godzilla film in 2019, with early rumors indicating the appearances of Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. Gareth Edwards has left the film however, and the replacement director has yet to be announced.

Other future plans indicate Godzilla will cross paths with King Kong once again after his upcoming prequel film, Skull Island, which may explains why Kong seems to be much larger in the trailer than his classic incarnation-

As for some other Kaiju, there was a teaser recently for what appeared to be a new Gamera film following up on the trilogy from the 90s, though the lack of news since then indicates the project may have stalled (or never really existed to begin with)-

Pacific Rim 2 (officially called Pacific Rim: Maelstrom) seems to be actually happening, with John Boyega as the lead and Steven DeKnight as director, with Del Toro still acting as producer and writer.

King Caesar has no upcoming projects or appearances but remains awesome no matter what anyone says.

    Man that sucks

I mean, good for Gareth Edwards, he now has enough cache he can make the projects he wants to make, but

I'm more worried about that sequel now

I adored Legendary's Godzilla, just about everything about it

And I'll always love Pacific Rim

The original Japanese cut, Gojira, is a legitimately great movie in a way that no other Toho-produced Godzilla movie really is. It's probably still the best movie the franchise has ever produced!

But Legendary's Godzilla was also a genuinely good movie

I hope they find a director who can do as good a job as Edwards did

Gareth Edwards was definitely the best part of that movie, too

Like, the script was kind of garbage, and the best actors (Cranston, Watanabe, Strathairn) were completely wasted, and we focus so much on Aaron Taylor Johnson, one of the blandest boards of wood in modern Hollywood

But the visuals and the pacing and the tension and the catharsis was all Edwards

img]WATCH OUT, ASSHOLES! HERE COMES ULTRAMAN TO BEAT YOUR SHIT DOWN

The Ultra Series is a long running television franchise in Japan, considered to be one of the most important pieces of Daikaiju history as well as televised tokusatsu. It revolves around heroes bearing the name Ultraman (with the exception of Ultra Q and Ultraseven) and their struggles to defend the world against the threat of kaiju. In fact, the franchise is 50 years old this year!

Ultraman is very cool because the kaiju fights are much more visceral than its counterparts on TV like Super Sentai. Instead of a giant robot flailing impotently with a sword, you have fights like this:

this is just a straight up BRAWL and it rules!

The Ultra series had a bit of a slump about a decade ago but it's putting out very good products lately, and: you can watch most of them in English!

This is Ultraman Orb, the current iteration of the franchise. It's an anniversary show, so it's very much about celebrating the past in the process of telling its own story. Kurenai Gai is an Ultraman who lost access to his own powers, and now defends Earth by using the Orb Ring to fuse the powers of past Ultramen together! It's funny! It's kinda badass! The bad guy's name is JUGGLUS JUGGLER!

and, much like basically every recent ultra series, is completely free to watch on Crunchyroll!

Ground level perspectives in Kaiju movies can be really great but you want the characters to be interesting still. Main guy from 2014 had the issue of being surrounded by much more interesting characters.

And changes the dialogue around a bunch, yeah. The dub adds a (then famous) American actor who gives expositional dialogue. The difference between the two versions for Ebert was 2 stars to 5 stars.

Well, if memory serves, the Criterion release of Gojira has both the original, unedited release, and the dubbed one you're talking about.

    It's a really well done re-release too!
