don't forget that high damage also means hitting rein's barrier which isn't meaningless damage
I'll often end up with gold damage as roadhog because I just hold right click in rein's general direction, and that is still a Good Thing to be doing because soon enough rein's shield breaks and we kill him
I also think people seriously underestimate roadhog's ability as a shieldbuster, shotguns are generally super effective because all the pellets can hit it easily and his right click in particular lets you guarantee every pellet hits without damage falloff. Super good.
Roadhog is one of my favorite tanks to heal, since he can soak up a lot of damage, which feed my ults, and does quite a bit of damage/kills himself. D.Va is good too. I only like healing aggressive Reins, but not too aggressive. Zarya is fun to heal too if she's good with barriers.
I tell my team everytime. You want heals? Better be in line of sight of my orb or healing stream.
DasUberEdward , we should play more.
@Mild Confusion Agreed. That Watch Point Gibraltar defense is still one of my favorite experiences in this game.

I get so pissed off at Mercy or Zen when they don't heal me as Roadhog. Yes, Roadhog can self-heal, but it doesn't matter much when doing well as Roadhog means you get focused too much to be able to pull back and heal. He doesn't need healing all the time, but dangit, at least keep an eye out towards him because he's specifically the character who is going to pull trouble off a healer to keep them alive.
I fully recognize it's on me to stay within range, but tunnel-vision Mercy irritates me so much. Probably because I'm used to playing as Zen and whipping around constantly to see who needs healing or which enemies need the discord orb the most.
Ugh, I've lost five in a row since coming back after dinner. I was flirting with 2900 and now I'm at 2746. Would it kill matchmaking to put me on some of the more cooperative teams?
No, the answer to a good enemy Widowmaker is not to go Widow yourself and get into a sniper duel. First of all, she's already established she's very good. Second, they control the point now, so faffing around in a virtual 1v1 doesn't help us recap the point. Third, there are at least two hard counters to Widow, why pick a coinflip?
Down to 2705; I'm done with comp for the night. Literally erased the gains of the last 3 days in the last 3 hours ><
Like, that room over there has a Symmetra, a Mei and six turrets. WHY DO YOU KEEP PUSHING INTO IT? Do you think maybe this time the turrets will malfunction?
Shit, at least switch to a Winston if you're going to do that so you can kill all six in a heartbeat.

Unit lost put up a great video today talking about ranking and whatnot, has helped reduce the pain of point loss in comp(for me at least).
I love Unit Lost's stuff, he's very charismatic and knows his shit. Got up to rank 71 at his height last season, so knows what he's talking about. Taught me most of what I know so far that I haven't picked up in game. The main thing I had to learn is just 'dont die' I was so used to Battlefield where I was a disposable cog that it took me til about halfway through comp to learn the importance of it.
Also, picking survivable characters went a long way for me.
Realistically, when I dropped from 2864 to 2800 I should have stopped. I didn't, and now I'm somewhere north of 2600. Need to remember that lesson that I learned back from League.
Edit: yep, 2656; I lost ~210 points tonight. Still nowhere near last season's ranking of 65/3500.
Has Blizzard actually said that placement matches don't pull from your QM/Season1 MMR? Everyone assumes so, but it seems like it would be really easy to convert your MMR from other modes into a starting MMR for placement matches.
What's really dumb is when people do something like pick Hanzo, throw arrows at enemies all day but never make a real difference or get a kill, then say "but I have gold medal for damage so I'm awesome."
If you have the gold medal for damage and not at LEAST bronze on eliminations (and frankly, you should be at silver)...
You really have the gold medal for charging the enemy team's ults. Please stop feeding Mercy/Zen/Lucio ultimate. IT'S NOT HELPING.
I'd argue that their ults charge so fast if this is more than a moot point the team has already lost for other reasons.

As I said earlier, I went 7-3 soloing with some real curbstomps on my games, playing all Lucio/Mercy, and I placed just shy of gold (~1900), which is where I should probably be because I don't play many FPSes generally speaking but got roped into this. Seeing all these people with losing records on the placements and being in the 2600+s? Yeah, I cannot imagine at all that there's absolutely no pre-calibration being done and some heavy inertia towards that. I'm pretty sure a bunch of the claims made in the video above about everyone being randomly thrown together are total horseshit.
I just competitive solo queued into a 5 person stack. They sounded like a group of friends having a good time, but they were well coordinated and it was great. I played some good Roadhog, getting two golds, two silvers, and a bronze and we won 3-0 on Lijiang. Friended them all and will play again. It was great.
My client bugged out and I couldn't Shadowplay it, which makes me sad. But it all was a very positive experience, time to stop for the night!
Side note: Is it just me, or does Eichenwald really really suck for the attacking team?
It happened in beta too, when new maps were added. At the start the attacking is way harder than defending. Later on attacking gets much easier when you know the map better.

Pretty sure they've said that MMR from QM or earlier seasons is incorporated to seed your initial placement matching. It's not just a random crapshoot. The only reason to even have the placement games at all is to account for the possibility that people play differently in a serious competitive match than they would in QM.

Placement put me at 2395.
My first match puts me in a game with a 2-man group that is IHANJO'ing it up.
We barely managed to pull out a draw.
So my main playstyle, in addition to whatever I should be doing in my main role on my mains (Lucio, Winston, and D.Va) is being a super annoying distraction who primarily keeps the enemy team looking the wrong direction.
So my main playstyle, in addition to whatever I should be doing in my main role on my mains (Lucio, Winston, and D.Va) is being a super annoying distraction who primarily keeps the enemy team looking the wrong direction.
I finally got around to playing Tracer.
I feel like I've found home.
The only thing more annoying than a jinky Tracer in the backfield is when you and the other support are stuck trying to deal with it on your own because the rest of the team is too busy laying down suppressing fire 30 feet away at an empty archway. Oh, you've moved in close and made the Tracer our problem too? We'll shoot twice until it escapes and then like canaries, out of sight, out of mind. Back to the archway.
I feel most comfortable healing with Ana because of good tracers. I'd much rather try and land one fast projectile left click and an AoE grenade then any other support's options for dealing with her, including running away and/or asking for help.
Genji is still a problem, I wish he had 175 HP or did less DPS with his ult up. Such a small reaction window to prevent getting assassinated.
Just played a level of Eichenwalde after being out of town for 11 days.
Man, people weren't kidding about that chokepoint. We had a Bastion firing on us, and if we got past him, a Winston, and if we got past him, a Rein, and if we got past HIM, an Ana to nanoboost him.
Meat grinder implies there's meat left at the end, instead of a fine dust.
I think part of it is that there's no real good way to kinda sneak in through that first archway in Eichenwald. Treacer and Genji can sorta just rush in, but the whole defending team will know it. Reaper can't really pull off any sneaky teleport that I've found, and there's enough open space that I think an attacking Reaper can't just waltz up and start blasting. Mcree and 76 can play the midrange game, but can lose to defending snipers way in the back. Only solution that has worked that I've seen is just get as many flankers on attack as you can and just rush the hell outta the first point.
This is to say nothing of actually moving the payload afterwards.
Anyway, advice would be appreciated, it's a tough nut to crack imo.
Isn't there a broken roof on the house to the left that flight or double jump can get into and onto the roof, and from there bypass the choke?
Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
Carl was saying the other day you can get over those rooftops with a DVa but overall yes that check point is rather brutal (probably the hardest but of the map) if you are against a competent defence.

I've had some limited luck as Dva by using the point defense ability to provide a few moments of pseudo invulnerability to allow teammates an opportunity to strike at the defenders without retaliation.
Airbursting mech self destructs clears out entrenched positions pretty well too.
I always really like making those things spin like crazy before the match starts. Or destroy the starting area. Or trying to get that basketball to go in.
Eichenwald on the other hand seems to offer none of those options. It is like Blizzard doesn't know what players really want.
Having a better start in comp than last time. Well, definitely not in terms of winrate, but in terms of people being asshats. Everybody's been chill, and comp switch asks have all been polite. 5 comp games with zero raging assholes is definitely a huge win compared to last season for me.

Junkrat, Pharah? I'm more okay with that - those are characters I expect to be spamming chokes and burning Reinhardt shields.

Hmm, from what I'm hearing, I think I'm warming up to try competitive again. Though, it feels like I'm getting my hopes up, only for them to be squashed again. ;-)
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. ~ Terry Pratchett

Junkrat's biggest flaw is that if you don't score those kills with the grenade spam, you are feeding the healer ults much faster than normal.
He will pretty much always have gold in damage, but if you are not doing well in kills, your damage is hurting your team.
