A replacement ship was sent out how what?

Well, I think Frontier got wind about it, there was even galnet posts about it, and if I remember correctly customer support restored his ship and wrote an apology from Lakon about their faulty autopilot or something like that. Here is a pic from when he finally recalled his restored/new ship:

... moments later all the present ships opened fire on Bomba Luigi's ship, pulverising him in seconds.

One of my favorite parts in that saga it the way they ferried his SRV around on top of a Cobra and Anaconda. They managed to fly him straight up out of the canyon he was stuck in, and over another at some point.

That's such a lovely image. It's like one of those nature programmes, where suddenly the animals do something that's too cute for words and almost impossible not to sentimentalise.

So I have yet to discover the secret to hull tanking. My FAS deals out more damage than my Vulture did and flies like a dream, but it always seems like I lose half my weapons when my shields go down. I'm guessing it's from missiles, but with the utility slot placement on the FAS point defense is kind of useless. Anyone have suggestions? Other than saving up for a Fer de Lance. :P

So I traded in my eagle Ford a viper and what an upgrade. I kind of wish the cockpit was a tighter fit, but having real firepower is amazing.

Yeah. It helps for some situations, but missiles ignore it.

I don't begrudge the guy, but that's pretty lame when I had a faulty autopilot destroy my Cutter at an engineer base costing me 40 mil plus the engineer cargo.

If the autopilot kills your ship (especially with a 40 million buyback), absolutely ticket it.

I said it a few pages ago, but I had a ship explode randomly in a way that could even have been my own fucking fault for all I know. They still refunded me my credits.

I found a tear down review for the new Thrustmaster throttle. Exactly what I was looking for in a review. Take the bad boy apart and tell me what you think.

I bought it immediately after watching. Looks like it's a bit better than I hoped for, with the obvious drawbacks of having some corners cut here and there for the sake of price. (plastic instead of metal, etc). But I didn't see anything that caused alarm in the review so I think I'm golden. Now I just need to wait until I guess this weekend to get my mitts on it. Well, mitt.

I really want that analog directional thruster control. I feel like it's the final piece to the puzzle so far as flying FA:OFF (in terms of gear, at least).

    Super stoked for it.

Update: Amazon borked the order completely. They didn't forward the order to the third party vendor (called them first) and Amazon CS said Amazon was trying to sell the item direct, but they didn't have any in stock. So yeah, if you want this, avoid Amazon like the plague- their shit is certainly not together on this one.

Newegg has it listed in stock, and the original vendor is Beach Audio. I've read some bad reviews on Beach Audio online in terms of shipping and returns, so I think if I try again it will be with Newegg. They have always been dynamite with that stuff and addressing any issues.

I'm pretty bummed both because I was really looking forward to it and because I had a gift card with Amazon as a birthday present.

The autopilot and especially autodock is actually really good and I will not see its honour impugned. It has a noticeably better success rate at landing the ship than I do.

Yea, I didn't look away for long though, I reached over and picked up my cell phone to answer a call basically. Up until that point I was moving level, and slow. I think the AP hit the engineer base tower, flipped, and plummeted right into the ground.

I did a ticket, but since I had an auto-pilot mishap months ago I put in a ticket for, they wouldn't refund me again. Oh well.

I use it for time saving. I can arrive at my station and spend another 2-3 minutes or more docking, or I can go take a leak or move around and stretch.

Maybe it's just because I fly smaller ships but docking takes me like 60s or so. Then again I blast through the mailslot then 0 my throttle while using manual thrusters to land.

I've not had too much trouble with docking so far aside from actually finding the entrance, but I've also not flown anything but the basic Sidewinder.

I've been perusing ships for a longer term goal; I figure I'll be aiming for either an Adder (so ugly) or Hauler (v. appealing) for my first upgrade, but the Diamondbacks are looking kind of appealing as a step up.

I see there is or was some kind of beta that made it easier to try ships out, but I'm guessing there's no "test drive" option in game or anything.

Is there any "real" maneuverability chart that includes the Sidewinder? Not that I'm biased at all or anything, but y'know. Found one for pitch... not liking the DBE's stats relative to the Sidewinder, as it already didn't feel all that nimble. Hrm. At least the Hauler looks to be comparable to the Adder....

So I have this problem where I can't yaw or thrust up or down in supercruise. Which makes things kind of hard to line up. Is this a bug or is there something I'm not seeing?

I almost okay manually docking but have on two occasions while inside a station hit the boost button. Which once cost me a ship and some bounties and the other time a quick "oh shit!" before I slowed down and bounced to safety.

You should be able to pitch, roll and yaw in supercruise. Lateral thrust doesn't function in supercruise.

What do you want to use the ship you are aiming for, possum? While almost all ships in E:D CAN do everything, the actually are optimised for different roles. Of the ships you listed, only the Adder is a multipurpose (and hey, it's not ugly! It's an awesome lifting body design with neat folding wings for... some reason! :-) .

    latest?cb=20151226215259&path-prefix=ru

It can also be a surprisingly competent combat-ship for its price and is great fun to fly with enhanced thrusters and some basic modding. I'm presently modding my adder to be a taxi for small group passenger missions, I want to see how fast I can get it with level 5 dirty drives. The view from the cockpit is not the greatest, but it does have that nice Zorgon Peterson interior. It reminds me a little of a miniature FDL, none of that cheap Faulcon Delacey plastic panel overload :D

The hauler is indeed just that, a hauler, and I don't think I'd use it for anything but getting from place to place these days, the NPCs can be quite aggresive and the hauler is made of cardboard.

The DBX is a lovely ship, but it is in a different price-range and is again not really a good multi-purpose compared to the alternatives in its price-range. It shines as a long range mission runner/smuggler, and is presently a nice ship for exploration as its name implies although it could use at least one more module space (rumor has is that it will indeed get one in an upcoming balance patch). The large hardpoint is pretty hard to use offensively, but if you engineer the dbx extensively it CAN be pretty nimble. That is more of a long-time effort though...

If you don't want an Adder, the next ship up to aim for is the Cobra Mk3 in my opinion. There is a reason this is the poster-ship for the game, and you can't really go wrong if you chose one.

I was planning to go for the Hauler because I want a big jump range to just wander around, but now I'm thinking a bit of combat capability would be nice. I want a maneuverable ship because that seems more enjoyable to fly; I'm more used to arcadey flight so the Sidewinder already feels like it takes forever (of course, a big part of that is that I haven't learned to keep the throttle in the optimal range).

I definitely have exploration as my goal; some combat ability would be nice but mostly I want to warp to a distant system, scan it down, and then check stuff out.

I am starting to lean more towards the Adder because being able to hop into low level combat has been fun; one thing that was really confusing was a "combat zone" near a station. A bunch of ships shooting at each other and I wasn't sure if I was "allowed" to participate or which side to pick (I shot at a couple anyway). Is it safer to shoot the ones that aren't the faction controlling the area?

  • LodbrokLodbrok Registered User regular
Well, if you intend to do even light combat, the Hauler is right out. Also remember that flying a ship is that has a-rated thrusters is very different from the starting equipment when it comes maneuverability. You already know about the blue-zone, additionally you can also put pips into engines when turning. This is not so important for the smaller ships, the turn fast enough once they are upgraded, but becomes very important for the bigger ships such as FDL and up.

Why don't you just try the adder and see if you like it? Sounds like it would fit you well. Modules can be bought and sold without any loss of money, selling a ship will cost you 10% of its value so for the cheaper ships it's not a big deal. You should also try an Eagle for combat, it's the most maneuverable ship in the game and is a blast to fly in combat zones and RES-sites.

Combat zones show up in systems that are in war or civil war. You can take part as a mercenary by declaring for one of the faction once you have jumped in, it is on the right-side panel under functions, the first row. Be aware that combat zones can be pretty intense, if you want to try them out move to the perifery of the zone before declaring so you don't get focused. RES-sites are probably easier if you want to try combat and earn some money, especially non-hazardous ones that have police precense.

I think you actually lose 15% on modules now when you sell them.

So what are some good weapons combos? Right now I have 2 c2 pulse lasers and 2 c1 cannons, all gimballs. It seems to do the job. But I'm wondering if I'm missing some magical synergy.

For maximum Starbuck, put four fixed multicannons on a Viper and turn flight assist off.

Oh, did this come with 2.2? Hm, not sure I agree that that was a good change... seems it will make it harder to experiment for new players.

@Casually What are you flying? I think the general consensus was that multicannons were preferable to cannons for general use, but this may have changed after 2.2. I know I find cannons more fun to use at least. It may be a good idea to switch the positions though so you have medium cannons and small lasers. Since the lasers are mainly useful against shields, it is more important to have higher class ballistics as damaging hull is subject to negative modifiers for smaller weapons against bigger ship-classes. Shield damage is not subject to the same handicap for smaller hardpoints.

I think I would build this then:

    https://coriolis.io/outfit/viper/1p7t7F8l8dcsdf2271b1818030053435325.Iw1+kA==.Aw1+kA==

After you got that, first prio to upgrade would be thrusters or power distributor. If you feel that you have good aim, you can switch the lasers or multis to fixed. Also, remember to only keep one SCB powered at one time, use on up and then switch to the other. This build may be a bit uninspired, but it should work ok. Maybe someone who knows Vipers better than me can come up with something better?

Haha, get used to it! Many ships have off-set drivers seat. I think Zorgon Petersen traces its origins to the UK, all their ships are right hand drive!

It amuses me greatly that the FDL, the number one combat ship has a big honking support strut right in your center vision. Good design choice there, ZP. :)

Guys, I am right on the precipice of throwing down some serious cash on this. I've always wanted to play a cool space dogfighting game but being unable to look around the canopy really put a damper on that. Now that VR is a thing and I watched a few videos and 2 seasons of BSG I think I'm ready to take the plunge but I've got to have the full immersive experience. I saw the review of the throttlemaster a few pages back, is that and the Occulous Rift the way to go here? Any recommended foot pedals? I'm a little wary about buying a first generation product, and I was looking into the PSVR because I think it's library will be the better one in the future i.e. if there's ever a X-Wing v Tie Fighter VR game I want to play it on day 1.

Does anyone have a full set up, and what is it? Is the juice worth the squeeze?

I have a OR that I pretty much brought for this game.

There's a downgrade in visuals, no argument there. But the immersion makes up for it, IMO. This will not be the case for everyone, it depends on how long your VR legs are because this game can make you sick. Also the OR CV1 isn't perfect, it's definitely a 1st generation product and improvements needs to made in comfort and visual fidelity if HMD is going to stick around (jesus, they really need to figure out this god ray problem).

Do I regret my purchase? No. Fuck no. I'm currently $2400 deep because I can't get enough VR. I'm fucking buying a Titan XP because I want to just fucking upload my god damn brain into a VR world.

Can I recommend it for everyone? I can't. Your mileage may vary and the best advice I can give you is to try it. Find someone local who's willing to give a demo of the gear and see for yourself if it's worth it. Setup an appointment with a Best Buy demo station. Definitely do go into this blind.

The Rift currently gives you a better VR experience than the Vive in E:D. Be warned that to get the most out of it, you need kind of a hefty rig. For foot pedals, they're not strictly necessary if you get that Thrustmaster HOTAS, as you have a twist axis on your joystick, plus those rockers on the throttle. If you do want pedals, Thrustmaster also makes an affordable set. I think @Tube has a set of these.

I'd say that even with the Vive and VR interface issues, E:D is probably one of the best realized VR experiences out there. The sense of scale contributes massively to putting you actually in the cockpit.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'm going to see about finding a best buy to test it out: I don't usually get motion sick, but it's better to be safe with this amount of cash on the line. Is there a timeline on OR improvements or a 2nd generation model? What is the god ray problem?

god ray problem is the way the lenses creates this...glare...that appears to look like smudges on the lens. Sometime it's very apparenty and other times it isnt. The severity of it also varies with people.
