So I went ahead a started a Private Group. I know a lot of people here generally play Solo, but the Private Group comes with all the benefits of Solo with the added bonus of having other PAers flying around. Little reason not to always load up in the Private Group instead of Solo. Also nobody actually "hosts" the Private Group so even if I'm not online everyone else can still tool around the galaxy.
Just send a friend invite to Axen Moon and I'll be sure to add you as soon as I can.
edit- Actually I think you have to go to Friends and Private Groups, select the Groups tab and search for Axen Moon. Been awhile so not 100% on it.
I've had a few people ask me how I changed my HUD colors. So I figure I'll just post what you need here.
For reference mine looks like this;
Next I recommend checking out NO2O! The Definitive List of color presets complete with screenshots. You can certainly expirement with your own values, but that thread has numerous tried and true setups and chances are one of em will catch your fancy.
edit- Oh yeah, the ED Profiler actually comes with all the NO2O! presets.
Some other random things.
Sidewinder Radio is a good "in-universe" radio station. They mostly play electronica, dubstep, British pop, etc. My favorite part is the awesomely done commercials and the Galnet News updates. Kinda handy to keep you in the loop.
Lave Radio is a great podcast in which they discuss all sorts of ED related topics. From general mechanics, upcoming patches, lore and other fun nonsense. They also have their own streaming radio station with commercials and updates.
I usually listen to Sidewinder Radio and will switch to Lave Radio podcast as they come out.
Elite: Dangerous Database is an insanely useful website. With it you can find the most likely locations for anything nearest to you. I say "most likely" because things do update and change from time to time so the info may not be up-to-date. Still, it has proved to be incredibly useful to me for locating ships, commodities, anything really.
@Drake Could we get this added to the OP for easy reference?
EDIT: Aaaaand I just got tired of reaching up to my keyboard. Voice Attack here I come!

I've been experimenting with the Cobra MK III. I finally made a bomber build. I went with rapid fire mines with the special that destroys shield generators outright.
It is such an ass build. The problem is, that if your mines hit them, you will be in the blast radius unless you boost away before impact. So almost every hit is a trade unless you're laying on the boost. Laying on the boost means you're constantly running out of your mines, so you can't build up a spider web situation where you pen your opponent in. It's really sad. I mean, kinda fun, but you just know you're playing with jank the whole time. And then you run out of mines.
One day I'll find a build on this cobra I like, but today is not that day.

Oh man, do those mines with an Imperial Courier. Won't have to worry about being in the blast radius while you're doing 600 at cruising and 800 on boost!

That's why my minelayer is a shieldless SR FAS with a strong hull And a APA.
I am actually considering picking up voice attack next check(and one of those swank voicepacks). At some point I'll hook up with people online and also start doing social things.
Right now I am still playing with bindings and controls and trying to make it look less like a drunk sloth is flying my ship.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

Not sure what your intended playstyle/intended role for that Cobra is Derrick, but on my Cobra I've built it like I'd imagine it like my ultimate back-up ship would be, i.e. no ammo dependant weapons. It's got one medium plasma slug rail, one medium plasma slug plasma and a couple of laser turrets with appropriate special effects. There are much more effecient weapon-loadouts for the cobra, but this one can take on any NPC wihout much trouble, stay indefinitely in a combat zone while still being surprisingly effective and is also really fun to fly, playing to the strengths of the Cobra.
Preorders are up on PSN. Base game is $30. Deluxe edition is $60, has Horizons and a Commander Pack (which I think is just a pack of decorative stuff).

I wish there were a Quince for Federation space. I'd like to do the occasional profitable mission while gradually ranking up. I don't need Empire rep any more.

Sothis/Ceos is the closest Fed has. Even has convenient passenger missions, though not nearly as super convenient as Quince.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Is it the same method as the old days? Long range passenger missions?
Short range. In Sothis there is a tourist beacon right outside the spaceport.
edit- Well not right outside the station. It is more near the star IIRC, hence why it isn't as super efficient as Quince. Plus Sothis/Ceos are right next to each other and are in a Boom state more often than not. I ran Boom Data missions for about two days and got my rank up from Midshipman to Post Commander before I had to take a break from it.

I finally found where my Logitech joystick ended up after my move, which made me think about this game and look up the changelog from when I stopped playing in early 2015
OMG I hate conflict zones. (I was trying to do the community goal.)I don't understand how you are supposed to make any money in them. I mean I get in, kill a few ships, (wow 20K each!) and slaughter the other side for a bit and then suddenly its 6 enemy ships on my all the sudden with zero time to react.
I've tried kitting my python for combat (6a shields, hull and module reinforcements and 6a shield cells) -fail from getting swarmed
I've tried my vulture (I fear no single ship in this one but against 2+ I always get wrecked)
Now I'm down 10 million in re-buys for a what would have been 100k total max? Is there a point I'm missing? Do I need an anaconda to hang there? Are the payouts just broken?

They're generally not worth it unless you have a massacre mission going in, otherwise the payouts are just too low. That being said, a couple of points:
When you enter the combat zone, immediately turn away from the crowd and fly a few km out before declaring a faction. That way you're not in the middle of a furball with enemy ships all around you when they go hostile.
Keep a very close eye on your radar. If you notice yourself drifting away from friendlies, disengage and fly back towards them. You don't want to get caught out by yourself when the next wave of hostiles warp in.
Also try and focus on shooting what your pack of friendlies is shooting. The goal is to build up a deathball of friendly ships that will keep the heat off of you and help you blow through targets as fast as possible.
So I haven't actually played this in forever, but I got my TrackIR reinstalled and VoiceAttack reinstalled ...
I've got my starter Sidewinder with minimal upgrades (stripped a shield, added cargo space; improved life support) and my somewhat upgraded Eagle that I got for ... preordering?
Anyway, the first thing I notice on the jobs board is a data delivery for 130k. When I get there, there's another one to a different system for 120k. And there, there's one to deliver 9 units of survival gear to a planetary city for 90k. I'd say 300k plus is a pretty good evening for how long its been since I played!
With that and what I had before, I'm up to about 400k in cash!
What's a good way to spend that much? I'd like something better at trading / mining than this sidewinder. (Can I even afford anything yet?)

Don't forget to have a rebuy. You might want to grab like an Adder now and upgrade to a Cobra MKIII soon, or save a little longer and get the Type 6. You should probably be shooting for the Type 6 right now with those goals.

Tooled around with the flight tutorials, starting to get my space legs back. Whereabouts are folks flying these days
Personally I think the ship kits are a bit crap, but these ones look better. It looks like you can make some decent changes. I bought the Anaconda one and I honestly couldn't even tell you what the changes are.
I do like the raider kits, but they're on ships you would never use for combat.
The Imperial ship designs are so distinct I find it hard to think of ship kits for them. Part of me really wants to build out the Cutter but man, that is expensive and it's such a dog with D grade thrusters that I'm not sure it'd be worth it...

Amazing. Hilarious. Enemy pilot has to live with the shame.
Well, I actually just fire a 5B and 4B at the same time on the same heat sink
I could do that on my Cutter though

That is interesting. (the lack of mention)
Think I've spent to much time there...also was unranked with imperial before and have a bundle of promotions to do now.

I do them in an Anaconda, but the trick I've found is to stay outside the furball and pick your targets carefully.
