So, I went ahead and signed on for the community goal, and I'm schlepping an 80-ton load of military-grade fabric up to the drop-off point. It was about 20 jumps away from where I started, of which I completed 15 yesterday. I could've dropped the required number of jumps by a lot by not picking up any cargo until I got closer, but since I've never been in that region of space, I don't actually know if there's anywhere nearby to get a full load, so I'll eat the additional jumps.
Bonus points is that it also will put me a couple of systems away from the engineer who sent me a "Come check this out!" message.
Also, switching your navicomputer from "efficient jumps" to "shortest time" is civilization. Like, before, it was offering me a routing that would take 5 jumps between my drop-off for a mission and my homeport, and switching it let me do it in one. Had me scratching my head why my upgraded FSD wasn't really cutting down on the number of jumps required, and the "extra fuel" required is far more than offset by the increased job velocity and far fewer jumps.
I will say that the type 6 has a Lakon cockpit and they make the best cockpits.
HOLY SHIT this cockpit is the best.
The only thing I wish I could change is the sensitivity of the bottom menu (Helm, Weapons, SCV, Fighters, etc.) because it pops up just a little too quickly when I look down. Because I love to look down and basically nail all my landing approaching visually - such a great feeling.
As long as you stay in private/solo, I suppose it doesn't matter, but if you take a ship engineered like that into open (especially in PvP) you are using cheats, no grey area there at all in my opinion. I really hope Frontier comes down hard on those who have been using this exploit, but given their track record that seems unlikely... also, if they don't deal with this, it will be hard to condemn combat logging. :?

I ended up deactivating the look-to-open, because I got tired of opening panels unintentionally when just trying to see out the side of my ship.
A downward facing camera for landings seems like something they would have by 3303 or whatever year it is.
Honestly the landing interface we already have would be pretty incredible if you could use it for real life parking. I'm not sure a downward facing camera would have much more utility than that.

It just needs to turn on sooner, since it requires you to be pretty low before it pops up.

I did this too, which is a shame because it's very cool. If you leave it on you have to make sure that your flight controls and menu controls share no bindings or you're going to end up looking too far to the left and disabling your fire button because suddenly it's trying to open the system map instead.

I could live with this. Landing a Cutter in high-G sucks ass. You can't point down because you start to drop like a rock. so it becomes a guessing game until right on top.

I have, on occasion, accidentally bounced off the moonscape because I held down the thrust-down button slightly too long. Luckily, 100% hull strength forgives a large number of sins.

I don't land on High G worlds with big ships without a docking computer. Whatever they have down there isn't worth it. Only the docking computer has the fine thrust control necessary to land safely.
I've thought about switching my landing override controls so that the thumb rotaries on the X55 throttle would work as vertical/lateral thrust axes, so I'd get the analog range of thrust without having to constantly hold a stick in a direction.
BTW the bug seems to be fixed. I just tried (while rolling 70 times to get optimized mass on a class 5 shield gen - to fit it into a Cutter) and now when you leave a roll in progress as soon as you got back into engineer UI it restarts the same roll with no chance to change it.
Meanwhile people who didn't sleep are posting obscene mods they ended up with.
So got my cutter finally. Now messing around with engineers really for the first time to tweak it. Didn't realize how pokey engineers can be once you spend time upgrading.
My Cutter is called The Albatross for obvious reasons.
I tend to do about five rolls for engineers, that normally leaves me with something good. I feel like rolling a hundred times for the perfect roll would make me hate the game really quickly.
I've kinda always wanted a set of rudder pedals. It took me waaaaaay too long to realize that, as an adult, I could totally just buy some. And my Extreme 3D Pro becoming more Am was a perfect opportunity.
Even if you have zero plans to use a voice pack or even talk to your PC, it's a great macro program that can run in the background (good for if I ever do the robot again).
I reinstalled this to try it again. I'm having trouble figuring out when missions aren't FOR me (there was a combat mission supposedly in my tier but it totally fucked me up), but doing data deliveries is pretty straightforward. I've got a fuel scoop and upgraded my jump drive thingy, so I'm just kinda hopping around wherever they want to send me.

If you are still in the starter sidewinder, doing the combat-missions are probably not worth it. They shouldn't be impossible, but will take some knowledge about how and when to engage. I have no idea what is a good way to start out these days, but doing delivery missions should work reasonably well. Just remember that the better your reputation with the local factions, the better missions you will get, so it may not be the best idea to just drift around wherever the missions take you, try to settle on a nice system and stay there for a bit. Also. jumping in someone elses fighter could actually be a nice way to make money starting out, a good bounty hunting sessions-payout should see you with a Cobra in short time....

Yeah - if you're in the starter Sidewinder, buy an extra cargo rack and replace your shield with it; that'll drastically increase the number of delivery missions you can run. Then, shop your local station's mission board for some deliveries going to the same system, and run those.
It's pretty easy to run several hundred thousand credits in a small amount of time, which should let you improve your Sidewinder a bit - but then focus on saving up for a slightly larger ship (a Hauler is cheap, but a Type-6 isn't expensive, and it's what I'm playing around with right now).

They're saying they can, at least.

Oh man I want either "Trust Fund Kid" or if it'll fit, "My Dad Owns a Dealership".

Man the number of times I've been like, "Wow I wish I had X, le sigh" only to realize I am an adult and can literally just buy it is pretty high.
I should be flying tonight to test it out.
